The Republican candidate in the race for a state senate seat plans to seek a recount.
Dan Kapanke trails incumbent Democratic state Senator Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse) by just 56 votes, following a canvass of the results. In a statement, campaign spokesman Luke Martz said the request comes as a result of how “extremely close” the race was. “A recount will ensure each and every vote that was cast is recorded correctly and fairly,” Martz said.
Kapanke is trying to reclaim the seat he lost to Shilling in a 2011 recall election. He was one of several GOP lawmakers targeted for recall after they supported Governor Scott Walker’s controversial law that eliminated collective bargaining for most public employee unions.
Shilling said the decision to pursue a recount at taxpayer expense is completely on her opponent, and she remains confident that it will not change the outcome of the election.
