Madison committee tables decision on Confederate landmark

July 24, 2018 By Raymond Neupert

The Madison Landmarks Commission has decided to put off a decision about a Confederate monument in a city cemetery.

The large marker lists the names of Confederate soldiers who died as prisoners of war at Camp Randall.

The Common Council says it endorses slavery, but the Landmarks Commission has the final say.

A compromise to replace the monument with an interpretive sign died without a second motion. Commissioners will take up the issue again at its August 27th meeting.
