Dempster breaks long drought

June 6, 2012 By Bill Scott

Ryan Dempster earned his first win since last August, tossing 7-innings of 3-hit

Yovani Gallardo

ball as the Chicago Cubs blanked the Milwaukee Brewers 10-0 on Tuesday night at Miller Park.

Coming into last night’s series opener, Dempster had gone 18-straight starts without a win, dating back to August 16th of last season.

Dempster broke his winless streak in dominant fashion, not allowing a baserunner until Cody Ransom singled to lead off the sixth.  At that time, Dempster was starting to think about perfection.

Dempster improved his career mark against the Brewers to 16-6 with a 2.65 ERA.

Alfonso Soriano, Jeff Baker and Bryan Lahair all clubbed home runs for the Cubs, who ended their 11-game road losing streak.

Gallardo allowed 5-runs, but struck out 10 Cub batters in the loss.  He falls to 4-5 on the season.

Zach Greinke (6-2, 3.46 ERA) pitches game two of the series for the Brewers tonight.  The Cubs counter with lefty Paul Maholm (4-4, 4.84 ERA).
