Brewers send Gallardo to Texas

January 20, 2015 By Bill Scott

Not wanting to lose another future free agent without compensation, the Milwaukee Brewers sent right-handed pitcher Yovani Gallardo to the Texas Rangers for three young prospects, right-handed pitchers Corey Knebel and Marcos Diplan and middle infielder Luis Sardinas.

The Brewers also agreed to pay $4-million of Gallardo’s $13-million salary for this season to the Rangers.

Gallardo becomes a free agent at the end of the season and the Brewers wanted to get something for him while they could.

The deal opens up some money for the Brewers to add some relief help for their bullpen.  It also clears a path for 25-year old right-hander Jimmy Nelson, who finished 2-9 with a 4.93 ERA in 14 games last season.  But he’s still considered the organization’s top prospect.

Both Knebel and Sardinas played briefly in the majors last season.

The 28-year old Gallardo went 89-64 with a 3.69 ERA in seven-plus seasons with the Brewers.  Gallardo leaves as the franchise leader with 1,226 career strikeouts and served as the Brewers opening day starter each of the last five seasons.

Brewers reportedly talking trade with Rangers

While football was on the brain for most of the sports nation, Major League baseball teams had some of their own action going on Sunday.

Both FoxSports.com and ESPN.com were reporting that the Milwaukee Brewers are sending right-handed pitcher Yovani Gallardo to the Texas Rangers.  Neither team is confirming anything at this time.

The Brewers exercised Gallardo’s $13-million option for 2015, but he can become a free agent at the end of the upcoming season.  The Rangers could convince Gallardo to sign an extension in Texas, which is where he played his high school baseball.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel cites sources from other clubs saying the Brewers had been aggressively shopping Gallardo of late. [Read more…]

Brewers exercise options on Gallardo and Ramirez

November 1, 2014 By Bill Scott

Yovani Gallardo - UPI/Bill Greenblatt

Yovani Gallardo – UPI/Bill Greenblatt

The Milwaukee Brewers have picked up the 2015-options on pitcher Yovani Gallardo and third-baseman Aramis Ramirez but declined to pick up the $11.5 million option on second baseman Rickie Weeks.

The Brewers have no viable option at third base besides Ramirez so they picked up their half of the $14 million mutual option.  Ramirez has three days to accept or decline.

Gallardo finished 8-11 in 2014 but had a career best 3.51 ERA over 32 starts.  He allowed 195 hits, issued 54 walks and struck out 146 hitters in 192 1/3 innings.  It’s his first losing record with the Brewers.

The 32-year-old Weeks was the second player selected in the 2003 draft but lost his everyday job at second base with the arrival of Scooter Gennett.  He played mostly against left-handed pitching this past season, hitting .274 with eight home runs and 29 rbi’s.  [Read more…]

Brewers eliminated from playoff contention

September 26, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers needed a strong road trip just to have a chance to stay in playoff contention.  They wrapped up the nine-game trip with a 3-6 record after Thursday’s 5-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.  The result eliminated the Brewers from playoff contention, which means they’ll play three meaningless games at Miller Park to close out the season against the Chicago Cubs.

Following a 10-1 victory against San Diego on Aug. 25, the Brewers had a 1 1/2 game lead on the St.Louis Cardinals atop the Central Division and six games over Pittsburgh.  Since then, the Brewers went 8-20 to fall out of the playoff picture.

After leading the National League Central for 150 days, the Brewers now have to win one of their three games against the Cubs this weekend to guarantee a winning record.

The Brewers committed three errors that led to a pair of unearned runs for Cincinnati.  The sloppy play also led Yovani Gallardo to lose for the eleventh (8-11) time this season, despite a 3.51 ERA.

Brandon Phillips clubbed a two-run homer for the Reds to push their lead to 5-2 at the time.  Rickie Weeks homered in the loss for the Brewers.

Jimmy Nelson (2-8, 4.57) pitches the series opener against the Cubs tonight.  Eric Jokisch (0-0, 1.74) goes for Chicago.

Pirates widen the gap over Brewers in Wild Card race

September 20, 2014 By Bill Scott

For the second straight night, the Milwaukee Brewers blew a late 2-0 lead and lost a game they appeared to have in hand.  Last night, the Brewers fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 to fall 4 1/2 games behind Pittsburgh in the wild-card race with eight games left to play.

When teams are looking to play their best baseball, down the stretch, the Brewers have dropped 17 of 23.

Yovani Gallardo worked seven shutout innings for the Brewers, striking out eleven a season high 11.  But Ron Roenicke went to the bullpen in the 8th and that’s when the roof caved in.

Pittsburgh’s Starling Marte beat the covering Jonathan Broxton to the bag at first for a close play and an infield hit.  After Andrew McCutchen struck out, Neil Walker lined a single to left.  Russell Martin then sent a Broxton fast ball into the seats in right center and just like that, the Pirates were up 3-2.

The Pirates added another run on an RBI single by Ike Davis off of Jeremy Jeffress to complete the scoring.

The Brewers scored their runs in separate innings.  Jonathan Lucroy’s rbi single in the first.  Rickie Weeks then hit a solo home run to lead off the fifth.

The Brewers will need to sweep the rest of the series and then get plenty of help next week to have any chance in the Wild Card race.

The prospects don’t look good.

Brewers 3-game win streak is history

Cincinnati starter David Holmberg entered Saturday’s game at Miller Park with a 8.25 ERA in four major-league appearances this season.  Those are the types of pitchers that have hurt the Milwaukee Brewers this season.

Holmberg held the Brewers to a run and two hits over six innings to earn his first victory, 5-1 over the Brewers before a sold out (45,205) Miller Park crowd.

The Brewers saw their 3-game win streak come to an end and they missed out on a chance to gain ground on the Pittsburg Pirates in the wild card race after Pittsburgh lost at home, 6-4 to the Chicago Cubs.  The Pirates still hold a game and a half lead on the Brewers for the final wildcard spot.

The Brewers continue to struggle scoring runs.  In 13 games this month, they’ve scored just 36 runs (less than 3 a game).

Right-hander Yovani Gallardo allowed two runs and four hits in six solid innings, but falls to 8-10 on the season.

The Reds broke the game open in the 7th inning.  Leading 2-1 at the time, Billy Hamilton clubbed a two-run triple off of reliever Zach Duke to make it 4-1.

The final game of the series is today.  Matt Garza (7-8, 3.83) pitches for the Brewers and Mike Leake (11-11, 3.62) goes for the Reds.

Gallardo serves up three HR’s in loss

Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton clubbed his NL-leading 37th home run of the season, tying the Marlins record for career home runs and the Marlins went on to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-4 on Monday night at Miller Park.

Stanton also added to his league leading rbi total, which is now 105.  He matched Dan Uggla’s team home run mark of 154.

Yovani Gallardo allowed three home runs in all and made it through just 3 2/3 innings in taking the loss.  Gallardo fell to 8-9 on the season with the loss.

St. Louis and Pittsburgh both won, which means the Cardinals lead on the Brewers is now six games for the division lead.  The Pirates are also in front of the Brewers by 1 1/2 games for the final NL Wild Card spot.

The Brewers quickly fell behind 1-0 in the first, but scored twice in the bottom half to go up 2-1.  But back-to-back home runs by Marcell Ozuna and Garrett Jones in the second made it 3-2.  A run scoring single by Christian Yelich made it 4-2. [Read more…]

Brewers drop into 3rd place in NL Central, out of Wild Card spot

September 8, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped three out of four to the St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend, including Sunday’s 9-1 setback.  It’s the 11th loss in the last 12 games overall.

The Brewers trail the Cardinals by five games and are a half game behind the Pittsburgh Pirates for the final NL Wildcard spot.

The Brewers committed three errors and the Cardinals took advantage.  But the fourth inning is all they would need, scoring four times to send the 31,771 fans in attendance at Miller Park into a wave of boos.

Jimmy Nelson (2-7) made it through five innings and took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks to go along with three strikeouts.  No announcement has been made, but Nelson would appear to be headed to the bullpen.

Carlos Gomez, who has been out of the lineup with a wrist injury, came on to pinch hit in the 9th and drove in the Brewers only run with a single.

Adam Wainwright (17-9) scattered seven hits to go the distance and earn the victory.

Yovani Gallardo (8-8, 3.43) pitches for the Brewers tonight as they open up a 4-game series against the Miami Marlins at Miller Park.  Brad Penny (1-1, 6.61) pitches for Miami.

Brewers sloppy in 7th straight loss

September 3, 2014 By Bill Scott

A sloppy start led to a 7-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs last night, as the Milwaukee Brewers extended their losing streak to seven straight games.

The Cubs scored four runs in the bottom of the first and never let the Brewers back in the game.  They’ve been outscored 49-14 during the seven game slide.

Yovani Gallardo (8-8, 3.43) was tagged for eight hits and seven runs (5 earned) in five innings as the Brewers dropped two-full games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central after the Cardinals knocked off Pittsburgh.

Matt Garza (7-7, 3.58) returns to the starting rotation tonight.  He’ll face Chicago’s Kyle Kendricks (5-1, 1.91) in the series finale.

Gomez out

Center fielder Carlos Gomez is expected to miss a couple of weeks with a sprained wrist that he injured while batting in last Sunday’s game against San Francisco.

Gomez went to Milwaukee to have his wrist examined by team physician William Raasch.  An MRI revealed no structural damage, but Gomez was diagnosed with a significant sprain and the wrist was put into a brace.

Gomez is hitting .282 with 21 homers, 65 rbi’s and 29 stolen bases this season.

September call-ups

The Brewers called up three more players from Class AAA Nashville, third baseman Jason Rogers, first/third baseman Matt Clark and shortstop Hector Gomez.  Rogers picked up his first big league hit in his first at bat, doubling into the right field corner on an 0-2 count, late in last night’s game.

Brewers blow lead, fall to Padres in 10 innings

August 28, 2014 By Bill Scott

Francisco Rodriguez blew a 9th inning lead and the Milwaukee Brewers fell to the San Diego Padres 3-2 in 10-innings on Wednesday night at Petco Park.

Padres catcher Rene Rivera’s home run tied the game, then Rivera delivered the game winning rbi single off of Zach Duke in the 10th to win it.

The Brewers dropped 2 of 3 in the series and fell to 6-5 in extra-inning games this season.

After Rodriguez gave up the 9th inning home run, Brewers manager Ron Roenicke was ejected for arguing balls and strikes with home plate umpire Mark Ripperger.

Gallardo escaped a pair of jams in the fifth and sixth innings to keep the Padres off the scoreboard.  He wound up pitching six innings of shutout, 3-hit ball.   Gallardo went into the night needing five strikeouts to surpass Ben Sheets for the all-time franchise lead.  But first the first time ever, Gallardo failed to strike out a single batter.

The Brewers scored twice in the 7th when Lyle Overbay singled.  Elian Herrera followed with a double to right, scoring Overbay.  Herrera took third on the throw, then scored on a wild pitch.

The Brewers missed a chance to increase their NL Central Division lead on St. Louis.  The Cardinals lost last night as well.  The Brewers still hold a game and a half lead entering an off day today.  They’ll open a 3-game weekend series in San Francisco against the Giants on Friday night.
