Brewers send Lucroy and Jeffress to the Rangers

August 1, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoJust one day after catcher Jonathan Lucroy vetoed a trade to the Cleveland Indians, the Milwaukee Brewers dealt him, along with reliever Jeremy Jeffress to the Texas Rangers just before the 3 p.m. trade deadline.

In return, the Brewers acquired the second and third rated prospects in the Rangers system.  Lewis Brinson is rated number-2 and right-handed pitcher Luis Ortiz is rated number-3, as well as the best pitching prospect in the Texas organization.

The 22-year-old Brinson was the 29th overall pick in the 2012 draft and has been playing at Class AA Frisco this season. [Read more…]

Brewers deal Smith to Giants

August 1, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoThe Milwaukee Brewers sent left-handed reliever Will Smith to San Francisco for the Giants’ top pitching prospect and a catcher.

The Brewers acquired The Giants 2015 first round draft pick, right-handed pitcher Phil Bickford.  The 21-year-old is a 6’4, 200 pound hard throwing pitcher that was selected 18th overall in the 2015 draft out of JC of Southern Nevada.  He originally pitched at Cal State-Fullerton before transferring to be eligible for the draft.

Bickford has pitched at the Giants two Class A levels this season, going 5-6 with a 2.71 ERA in 17 games.  He recorded 105 strikeouts in 93 innings, throwing his fastball in the mid 90’s. [Read more…]

Brewers finish home stand by sweeping the Pirates (AUDIO)

August 1, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoEarly in the day, the Milwaukee Brewers thought they had a deal worked out with Cleveland that would send Jonathan Lucroy to the Indians for four players, including three prospects.  Lucroy vetoed the deal and remained a Brewer, for now.

That activity off the field didn’t seem to bother the Brewers on the field.  They knocked off Pittsburgh 4-2, sweeping the Pirates and capping off a 10-game home stand with a 7-3 record.

Lucroy could still find a new home today.  The Major League trade deadline is 3 p.m. this afternoon.

Matt Garza worked five solid innings, allowing one earned run and four relievers combined to finish the deal. [Read more…]

Late rally lifts Cubs past Brewers at steamy Miller Park

July 25, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoThe Chicago Cubs rallied in the 7th inning, scoring five times to come from behind and beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-5 at Miller  Park on Sunday.

Anthony Rizzo’s bases-clearing double off Will Smith was the big blow as the two teams played for four hours and eight minutes in the extreme heat.

The Brewers had their chances, putting runners on second and third with nobody out in the sixth inning off of veteran Joe Nathan.  But Nathan struck out Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy and Chris Cater to get out of the jam.

Trailing 6-4 in the ninth, Kirk Nieuwenhuis clubbed a solo home run to right to close the scoring.  Nieuwenhuis now has three home runs in his last two games. [Read more…]

Wild pitch costs Brewers against the Giants

June 15, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoBack-to-back wild pitches from Milwaukee Brewers reliever Will Smith in the 7th inning plated the winning run as the San Francisco Giants pulled out a 3-2 victory on Tuesday night at AT&T Park.

Madison Bumgarner was at the plate in the 7th when Smith uncorked two wild pitches to give the Giants the win.  It’s the 10th straight victory for San Francisco when Bumgarner is on the mound.

It wasn’t easy for San Francisco.  The Giants went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 13 men on base.

Matt Garza made his first start of the season for the Brewers after missing the first 2 1/2 months with a strained lat muscle behind his pitching shoulder.  Garza held the Giants to a run over four innings but allowed eight hits and a walk, as he pitched himself out of trouble throughout.

Jonathan Lucroy clubbed his 10th home run of the season for the Brewers in the loss.

The Brewers will try to avoid a sweep when Jimmy Nelson takes the mound this afternoon in the series finale against San Francisco’s Johnny Cueto.

Smith activated, Blazek to the DL (AUDIO)

June 2, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoLeft-handed reliever Will Smith was activated from the disabled list on Wednesday.  He wasn’t needed after Zach Davies pitched eight solid innings in the Milwaukee Brewers 3-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

To make room on the roster, the Brewers sent David Goforth back to Class AAA Colorado Springs.

Smith missed the first two months of the season after suffering a torn lateral collateral ligament in his right knee.  He was injured while trying to remove a shoe.  Smith decided to try to avoid surgery that would have cost him the season.

Smith was originally supposed to share the closers role with Jeremy Jeffress.  While Jeffress has flourished in his absence, manager Craig Counsell indicated he would still consider returning to that idea. [Read more…]

May 31, 2016 By Bill Scott

Ryan Braun

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Will Smith will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday night with Class “A” Brevard County.

The left-handed reliever has been recovering from a torn L-C-L in his right knee at during Spring Training, in a freak accident while removing one of his shoes.

Manager Craig Counsell says Smith could make his season debut for the Brewers in early June if his rehab outings go well, and he has good results in two consecutive games.

Braun returns

Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun returned to the Milwaukee lineup Sunday, after missing six of the last seven games with a stiff lower back and a wrist issue.

Braun singled in four trips in the Brewers 3-1 loss to the New York Mets.

The Milwaukee Brewers plans to split closing duties between Will Smith and Jeremy Jeffress could get off to a slow start.

Left-handed pitcher Will Smith was having his swollen right knee examined on Friday and the Brewers could have an announcement on Saturday.

Smith is perfect so far this spring, pitching seven scoreless innings.  he experienced soreness in his knee after pitching in a minor league game on Thursday and still had swelling on Friday morning.

Jeremy Jeffress just returned to the mound after missing a few weeks with a strained hamstring.  He could be looking at the majority of the closer action if Smith can’t go.

Smith finished last season with a 7-2 record and a 2.70 ERA in 76 relief appearances last season.  Jeffress went 5-0 with a 2.65 ERA in a career high 72 appearances.

Brewers avoid arbitration with three players

January 16, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoThe Milwaukee Brewers came to terms on one-year deals with all three of their arbitration-eligible players, agreeing to deals with shortstop Jean Segura and pitchers Wily Peralta and Will Smith.

Teams and players had until noon Friday to reach agreements or exchange numbers for possible hearings in February.

Each player made just over the minimum salary last season and will see significant pay raises.

Will Smith’s salary nearly tripled to $1.475 million.  Segura’s salary jumps from $534,000 to $2.6 million.  Peralta goes from $525,500 to $2.8 million.

The 26-year-old Peralta has been in the starting rotation for three-plus seasons, posting a 35-37 record and a 4.02 ERA in 90 games.

Smith has compiled an 8-5 record and 3.21 ERA in 154 appearances.

Segura, who turned down a $38 million, six-year extension offer in the spring of 2014, has been the starter at shortstop for more than three years.  In 479 games, he has hit .266.
