Former Milwaukee Brewers reliever Jeremy Jeffress signed a free agent deal with the rival Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old Jeffress had three separate stints with the Brewers before they finally released him on September 1, 2019.  He reportedly signed a major-league contract worth $850,000 and has games-pitched incentives that could add as much as another $200,000.

Jeffress started the 2019 season on the injured list after experiencing shoulder weakness.  He ended up appearing in 48 games, posting a 5.02 ERA.

Jeffress was a first-round draft pick of the Brewers in 2006 and was traded to Kansas City in the 2010 deal that brought Zach Greinke to Milwaukee.  His best season came in 2018 when he went 8-1 with a 1.29 ERA in 73 games with 15 saves.  He also made the all-star team that season.

Jeffress is the second former Brewers player to sign with the Cubs.  They also added utility infielder Hernan Perez.

The Milwaukee Brewers took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning over St. Louis on Tuesday night, then the roof caved in, leading to a 9-4 loss to the Cardinals.

The Cardinals tallied four runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to take control of the game.

The meltdown started in the bottom of the sixth when Jeremy Jeffress (3-4) loaded the bases and didn’t retire a batter.  After Alex Claudio came on to strike out Kolten Wong and Craig Counsell turned next to Junior Guerra.

Guerra quickly walked Harrison Bader to force in the tying run before striking out pinch-hitter Matt Carpenter for the second out.  The big blow came next, when Dexter Fowler lifted a broken-bat pop fly [Read more…]

Brewers bullpen fails to hang on to victory

July 23, 2019 By Bill Scott

Tyler Saladino was looking to play hero for the second straight day, but the Brewers bullpen didn’t allow for it to happen as Milwaukee suffered a 6-5 loss in their series opener against the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park on Monday night.

Saladino took a first pitch fastball and homered to straight away center, his second grand slam in as many days.  It put the Brewers up 5-4 and their third straight come-from-behind win in sight.

However, Josh Hader wasn’t available to slam the door in the ninth and that proved trouble for the Brewers.  They instead went with Jeremy Jeffress for the third straight day.  Jeffress hung a breaking ball to Eugenio Suarez, who deposited it into the seats in left center, giving the Reds the comeback win. Eric Thames and Jesus Aguilar both homered as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Francisco Giants 5-3 on Sunday, salvaging the final game of their three-game series.

Chase Anderson lasted only four innings but allowed just three runs.  Matt Albers picked up the win out of the bullpen as the Brewers avoided being swept in the series.

Junior Guerra and Jeremy Jeffress followed Albers with a scoreless inning each before Josh Hader retired the last six hitters to record his 17th save of the season.

Kevin Pillar, Brandon Belt and Jeff Samardzija all notched an RBI for the Giants.  Samardzija took the loss, allowing four runs over five innings for the Giants, who saw their four-game winning streak come to an end.

The Brewers open a three game series in San Diego against the Padres on Monday night.  Jhoulys Chacin (3-7, 5.74) returns from the disabled list to pitch for the Brewers.  Joey Lucchesi (5-4, 4.11) goes for the Padres.

June 10, 2019 By Bill Scott

Mike Moustakas

The Milwaukee Brewers erased a 2-0 deficit and went on to beat Pittsburgh 5-2 at Miller Park on Sunday, pulling out a sweep of the Pirates with their fourth straight win.

Christian Yelich started the comeback in the sixth with his Major League leading 24th home run of the season.  Ben Gamel followed with a pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh.  Mike Moustakas clubbed a two run homer, his 20th of the season and Orlando Arcia added a sac fly in the eighth to lift the Brewers.

Moustakas entered the game having gone just 3 for 21 (.143) with one double against Liriano over the course of his career.  Overall, Moustakas raised his average to .275 with 20 homers and 43 RBI.  In his last 15 games, he’s hitting .344 with nine homers and 14 RBI.

Moustakas also won a season ticket holder (Mark Gruber) a car when his home run struck the roof of a Toyota RAV4 parked in right-center field.

Moustakas and Yelich are two of only four players that have reached 20 or more home runs at this point in the season. [Read more…]

Chacin struggles and Brewers drop finale to the Dodgers

April 15, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers managed to win their series with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but they dropped their series finale 7-1 in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Starter Jhoulys Chacin made it through just 2 1/3 innings, allowing six hits, three walks and six runs, falling to 2-2 on the season.

“My slider wasn’t working today,” Chacin said.  “Not for lefties or for righties. I just couldn’t command it.  Those guys hit a lot of homers but they also take a lot of walks, too.  You have to throw strikes and make good pitches.”

Dodger pitcher Ross Stripling tossed eight innings of one-run ball and didn’t allow a run until Eric Thames’ Sacrifice fly in the eighth.  Stripline allowed just four hits and a while striking out three. [Read more…]

Knebel opts for season ending surgery

March 30, 2019 By Bill Scott

Corey Knebel

Milwaukee Brewers reliever Corey Knebel, after conferring with several specialists, has decided to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery and hopefully return sometime next season.

Knebel is scheduled to have the procedure done on Wednesday in Los Angeles with renown orthopedist Neal ElAttrache.

Knebel said he inured the arm five years ago and it’s gotten worse over time.  He said at the age of 27, it’s better to do it now than wait until later.

The Brewers closer met with several doctors and they all recommended surgery.

Knebel was told in 2014 while with the Rangers that he might need Tommy John surgery.  He made it five years before finally needing the procedure.

The Brewers are also dealing without reliever Jeremy Jeffress with shoulder fatigue.  But he’s expected to pitch in his first game at Class AAA San Antonio in the next week or so and could rejoin the Brewers soon.

Knebel dealing with elbow injury (AUDIO)

March 22, 2019 By Bill Scott

Corey Knebel

Milwaukee Brewers reliever Corey Knebel is headed for a second opinion after it was discovered he was pitching with a damaged ulnar collateral ligament (UCL).

Brewers manager Craig Counsell told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that it’s not a complete tear, and wouldn’t likely require Tommy John surgery.

“We don’t know that,” Counsell said of Knebel possibly needing that procedure.  “Corey has pitched with this for a long time.  We’ve got to figure out what’s there, what’s new.  Make sure we get the right answer and then move forward.”

It means the Brewers will start the season without both Knebel and fellow reliever Jeremy Jeffress.  Jeffress is sidelined with shoulder weakness, but the Brewers expect to get him back before the end of April.

Jeffress made 73 appearances last season, which is a career high.  He finished 8-1 with a 1.29 ERA, striking out 89 in 76 2/3 innings.

Knebel finished strong last season and pitched in nine postseason games.  In 10 innings, he posted a 0.90 ERA with 14 strikeouts.

Counsell said they’ve been down this road before.  “In 2016 we lost Will Smith and Corey the week before the season, and we performed pretty well.  Those next guys picked up the slack and did a pretty nice job still.  That’s when J.J. kind of stepped up and did a great job.”
