Williams likely out for the season with broken hand

September 30, 2021 By Bill Scott

Devin Williams

The Milwaukee Brewers are expecting to be without the services of top setup reliever Devin Williams for the upcoming playoffs.  Williams suffered a broken right pitching hand after punching a wall after having a few drinks following Sunday’s National League Central Division clinching win over the New York Metw.

Brewers President of Baseball Operations, David Stearns told reporters on Wednesday that Williams will undergo surgery to put a plate in his hand to repair the fracture and that the injury will likely keep him out for the remainder of the season.

Williams told reporters that after the team celebration, he went out to have a few drinks.  When he returned home, he was a little frustrated, upset and punched a wall.

Williams won National League Rookie of the Year honors in 2020 and has an 8-2 record with a 2.50 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 54 innings this year.  He has set the table for Josh Hader and provides one of the best 1-2 closing combinations in the majors.  The Brewers are 70-4 this season when leading after seven innings.

The Brewers are making their fourth straight postseason appearance.  Veteran relievers Brad Boxberger and Brent Suter are likely next in line for setup duties.  Boxberger made his 70th appearance of the season in Wednesday’s 4-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Burnes and Hader combine for second no-hitter in Brewers franchise history (AUDIO)

September 12, 2021 By Bill Scott

Corbin Burnes

With his pitch count at 115 after eight innings, Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell knew that Corbin Burnes has several more very important innings ahead of him.  It’s why Counsell removed Burnes, despite his not allowing a hit and allowed closer Josh Hader to nail down his 31st save and preserve a combined no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Cleveland Indians on Saturday night.

It’s the second no-hitter in Brewers franchise history and the first since Juan Nieves no-hit the Baltimore Orioles on April 15, 1987.

It’s been a remarkable year for Burnes, who continues to make a strong bid for the National League Cy Young Award.  He opened the season with 58 strikeouts before he walked his first batter, which set a Major League record.  He finished with 14 strikeouts on Saturday night.  A single walk in the seventh inning is the only thing that prevented Burnes and Hader from combining for a perfect game.

The Brewers pushed their record to a franchise best 33 games over .500.  Their magic number to clinch the National League Central is down to seven. [Read more…]

Brewers avoid arbitration hearings with Hader, Woodruff

January 15, 2021 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers avoided salary arbitration hearings by agreeing to one-year deals with reliever Josh Hader and top starter Brandon Woodruff on Friday.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Hader’s deal will pay him $6.675 million for the 2021 season after the left handed closer earned $4.1 million last season.

The Brewers also avoided an arbitration hearing with starter Brandon Woodruff.  As a “Super 2” player, Woodruff goes from $633,100 last season to $3.275 million this season.

Hader led the National League with 13 saves in the pandemic shortened 2020 season.  He started the season with a major league record 12 hitless outings.

Woodruff was the opening day starter for the Brewers and went just 3-5 in 13 starts.  But he compiled a 3.05 ERA with a 0.991 WHIP and 91 strikeouts in 73 2/3 innings.

The Brewers now have 14 players under contract for the upcoming season.

Williams Voted To 2020 All-MLB Second Team

December 10, 2020 By Bill Scott

Devin Williams

Milwaukee Brewers right-handed reliever Devin Williams has been voted to the 2020 All-MLB Second Team.

The 26-year-old Williams, who previously won National League Reliever of the Year and National League Rookie of the Year, turned in a dominant season as he went 4-1 with a 0.33 ERA in 22 appearances.

Williams was first or tied for first among Major League relievers (min. 20ip) in ERA (1st), opponent batting average (1st, .090), WHIP (1st, 0.63), strikeouts (T1st, 53 – led NL) and K/9 IP (T1st, 17.67 – led NL).  He surrendered just a single earned run the entire season, which came in his second appearance on July 27 at Pittsburgh.

Williams was selected in the second round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.

The inaugural All-MLB teams debuted following the 2019 season.  Outfielder Christian Yelich and left-handed reliever Josh Hader represented the Brewers in 2019, each earning first-team honors.

Brewers reliever Williams is finalist for NL Rookie of the Year

November 3, 2020 By Bill Scott

Devin Williams

Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Devin Williams has already captured National League reliever of the year for the past 2020 season.  Monday, he was named Monday as one of three finalists for National League Rookie of the Year as voted on by the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Williams is joined by Philadelphia third baseman/first baseman Alec Bohm and San Diego infielder Jake Cronenworth on the ballot.

Rookie of the Year honors will be announced next Monday.

The Brewers have had two Rookie of the Year winners in franchise history, shortstop Pat Listach in 1992 and third baseman Ryan Braun in 2007.

No relief pitcher has won rookie of the year honors in either league since Atlanta’s Craig Kimbrel in 2011.  No pitcher not used as a starter or a closer, has ever captured the honor in either league.

Williams went 4-1 with a 0.33 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 27 innings.  He also led Major League relievers with a 0.63 WHIP and .090 opponents batting average.  He captured NL reliever of the year  honors after teammate Josh Hader took home the award each of the two previous seasons.

Brewers Williams named NL’s top reliever

October 25, 2020 By Bill Scott

Devin Williams

Milwaukee Brewers reliever Devin Williams has been named the Trevor Hoffman National League reliever of the year.  Williams is the first rookie and first pitcher without a save to win the honor in either league.

Williams served as a setup man to Josh Hader, who won the award in both 2018 and 2019.  He finished with the best ERA (0.33), WHIP (0.63) and opposing batting average (.090) in the majors and tied for the lead among relievers in strikeouts with 53 in 27 innings and strikeouts per nine innings (17.67).

Williams allowed just one earned run all season.  He held opponents without a hit in 31 straight at-bats, from August 14th through September 11th.

Williams fastball was routinely clocked in the upper 90’s, but his out pitch was his changeup.  Opponents struck out 41 times against that pitch.

Williams didn’t pitch in the National League wildcard series loss to the Dodgers.

Brewers continue playoff push, knock off Reds

September 23, 2020 By Bill Scott

Eric Sogard

Eric Sogard’s playing time had dwindled considerably in the past few weeks, but given an opportunity on Tuesday night, Sogard delivered to help the Milwaukee Brewers pull out a much-needed win.

Sogard doubled twice, including a shot to left that broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Brewers a 3-2 victory at Great American Ballpark.  It moved them into a wildcard playoff spot with six games left to play in the regular season.

Orlando Arcia and Tyrone Taylor also drove in runs for the Brewers.  Taylor’s came with a solo home run in the fifth.

The win also moved the Brewers into a tie with the Reds for third place in the NL Central, 5-games behind the division leading Chicago Cubs.  They’re just a half game behind the second place Cardinals, who are 4 1/2 games back.  The Cubs clinched a playoff spot, despite falling 3-2 to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

Brett Anderson pitched six innings of two-run, four-hit ball to earn the win, improving to 4-3 on the season.  He recorded seven strikeouts, his highest total since Sept. 15, 2015 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Devin Williams followed with two innings of scoreless relief, striking out five.  Josh Hader retired the Reds in the ninth for his 11th save of the season.

The Reds scored both of their runs in the first inning on a Nick Castellanos home run to center.

With the series tied 1-1, the all-important rubber game is Wednesday night.  Adrian Houser (1-5, 5.33) pitches for the Brewers, facing Cincinnati’s Trevor Bauer (4-4, 1.80).  First pitch is set for 5:40 p.m.

With the game tied 3-3 in the ninth, the Milwaukee Brewers called on their closer, Josh Hader to keep the game deadlocked.  But for the first time this season, Hader allowed a hit, in fact he allowed two as the Cleveland Indians pulled out a 4-3 win at Progressive Field.

The Indians Oscar Mercado had a leadoff double in the ninth and took third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Cesar Hernandez single to win it.

Hader hadn’t allowed a hit in his first 12 games, covering 11 2/3 innings and 47 batters.

The Brewers scored first, in the fourth inning when newcomer Daniel Vogelbach ripped a double to right to score Keston Hiura. [Read more…]

Home runs propel Brewers to split with Tigers

September 3, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers fell behind 4-0 and 5-1 on Wednesday night before rebounding for a 8-5 win in their series finale with the Detroit Tigers at Miller Park.  The loss snapped Detroit’s six-game winning streak.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell improved his career record to 422-400 and tied Tom Trebelhorn for third place on the Brewers’ all-time list for wins by a manager.

Tiger pitchers issued a season high 10 walks, four of the ten to Christian Yelich.  The Tigers also hit two batters.  Six of those walks turned into runs for the Brewers.

Keston Hiura clubbed a three-run homer, his 9th of the season.  Jace Peterson gave the Brewers some insurance with a two-run home run in the eighth.

The win gave the Brewers a 6-4 record on their 10-game homestand.

Eric Yardley (2-0) got the win in relief of Adrian Houser.  Yardley pitched two solid innings of relief.  Houser gave up five runs and nine hits in five innings.

Devin Williams worked a perfect eighth and Josh Hader finished off the Tigers in the ninth with his ninth save.  In 12 appearances and 11 2/3 innings, Hader still hasn’t allowed a base hit.  Williams has allowed just four hits and one run in 16 innings, forming a rock solid 1-2 punch for the Brewers in the bullpen.

The Brewers have the day off on Thursday.  They’ll open a three-game series in Cleveland against the Indians on Friday night.

Arcia’s pinch hit leads to Brewers victory

September 1, 2020 By Bill Scott

Orlando Arcia

Orlando Arcia’s two out, pinch-hit single in the eighth inning gave the Milwaukee Brewers a 6-5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night at Miller Park.

Ben Gamel led off the eighth with a double and eventually scored on Arcia’s hit as the Brewers took three of four in the series from Pittsburgh.

The Brewers went with a bullpen by committee approach, giving lefty Brent Suter the start.  He went three innings and allowed one hit, a two-run homer off the bat of Erik Gonzalez in the third inning.  Suter had retired the first eight batters of the game before walking Pittsburgh’s Cole Tucker.

Keston Hiura gave the Brewers a 5-3 lead in the fifth, clubbing a leadoff home run off of Pirates starter Trevor Williams.  Hiura has four home runs in 10 games against the Pirates this season and 10 in 26 career games against Pittsburgh.

The Pirates tied the game 5-5 in the sixth on Jose Osuna’s two-run single off of reliever Freddy Peralta, but the Brewers would go ahead in the 8th.

Devin Williams (3-1), who was the fourth of five Brewers pitchers, struck out four and didn’t allow a hit in 1 1/3 innings for the win.  Josh Hader bounced back from his five walk performance to work the ninth for his eighth save of the season.  Hader has yet to give up a hit this season.

The Brewers open a two-game series against the Detroit Tigers at Miller Park on Tuesday night.  Josh Lindblom (1-2, 6.31) gets the start for the Brewers.  Michael Fullmer (0-0, 8.79) goes for the Tigers.
