Brewers place Cain on injured list

April 14, 2021 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers put centerfielder Lorenzo Cain on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a left quadriceps strain.

The 35-year-old outfielder suffered the injury while running to first base in Tuesday night’s 3-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs at American Family Field.  The Brewers called up outfielder Tyrone Taylor from their alternate training site.

Cain suffered a right quadriceps injury during spring training, which allowed him to play in just seven preseason games.  He is hitting just .154 in seven regular-season games with two home runs and four RBI.

Taylor was one of the Brewers last players cut out of spring camp.  He hit .293 in 19 games with 2 HR and four RBI.  He hit .237 with two home runs and six RBI in 22 games during the pandemic shortened 2020 season.

Brewers long ball to capture Cactus League opener

March 1, 2021 By Bill Scott

Keston Hiura

Keston Hiura got Milwaukee off to a good start with a first inning, three-run homer and the Brewers went on to beat the Chicago White Sox 7-2 in their Cactus League opener on Sunday.

The Brewers also got home runs from Avisail Garcia, Tyrone Taylor and Dylan Cozens in a game that was limited to six innings.

The Brewers played before fans for the first time in more than a year, albeit a limited number.  The announced total was 2,347 for the game.

Eric Lauer gave up a pair of runs in the first inning.  The Brewers then got scoreless innings from Justin Topa, Angel Perdomo, Miguel Sanchez, Ethan Small and Aaron Ashby.  Perdomo and Small retired the side in order.  Ashby closed the game with three straight strikeouts..

The Brewers are back at it again on Monday, facing the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Brewers drop opener in St. Louis, have little margin for error

September 25, 2020 By Bill Scott

Rookie Dylan Carlson homered, doubled and drove in three runs to lead the St. Louis Cardinals (28-26) to a 4-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers (27-29) at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on Thursday night.

The Cardinals trail the division leading Chicago Cubs by 2 1/2 games, while the Brewers may have put themselves in a situation to need to win out or at least capture three of their four remaining games to have a chance at the playoffs.

Their best chance was supposed to be Thursday night with Corbin Burnes (4-1) on the hill.  He entered with a 4-0 record and 1.77 ERA.  But Burnes didn’t have his good stuff and ended up leaving in the fourth inning with lower back discomfort, after allowing a home run for just the second time this season.

Three wins in the last four games would give the Brewers a 30-30 season and that may or may not be good enough to make the postseason.  They’ve now dropped three of their last four games, with a doubleheader against the Cardinals on Friday.

Tyrone Taylor and Eric Sogard delivered the only two run scoring hits for the Brewers.  Runs have been hard to come by most of the season.  Thursday night, the Brewers had nine hits, but went just 2 for 9 with runners in scoring position. [Read more…]

Brewers continue playoff push, knock off Reds

September 23, 2020 By Bill Scott

Eric Sogard

Eric Sogard’s playing time had dwindled considerably in the past few weeks, but given an opportunity on Tuesday night, Sogard delivered to help the Milwaukee Brewers pull out a much-needed win.

Sogard doubled twice, including a shot to left that broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Brewers a 3-2 victory at Great American Ballpark.  It moved them into a wildcard playoff spot with six games left to play in the regular season.

Orlando Arcia and Tyrone Taylor also drove in runs for the Brewers.  Taylor’s came with a solo home run in the fifth.

The win also moved the Brewers into a tie with the Reds for third place in the NL Central, 5-games behind the division leading Chicago Cubs.  They’re just a half game behind the second place Cardinals, who are 4 1/2 games back.  The Cubs clinched a playoff spot, despite falling 3-2 to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

Brett Anderson pitched six innings of two-run, four-hit ball to earn the win, improving to 4-3 on the season.  He recorded seven strikeouts, his highest total since Sept. 15, 2015 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Devin Williams followed with two innings of scoreless relief, striking out five.  Josh Hader retired the Reds in the ninth for his 11th save of the season.

The Reds scored both of their runs in the first inning on a Nick Castellanos home run to center.

With the series tied 1-1, the all-important rubber game is Wednesday night.  Adrian Houser (1-5, 5.33) pitches for the Brewers, facing Cincinnati’s Trevor Bauer (4-4, 1.80).  First pitch is set for 5:40 p.m.

Brewers no-hit by Chicago’s Mills (AUDIO)

September 14, 2020 By Bill Scott

Making just his 15th major league start, Chicago right-hander Alec Mills tossed Major League Baseball’s second no-hitter of the season, leading the Cubs to a 12-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday at Miller Park.

Mills walked three and struck out five, finishing with a career-high 114 pitch effort to improve to 5-3 on the season.  He retired Jacob Nottingham (pop up), Tyrone Taylor (strikeout) and Jace Peterson (ground out) to complete the no-hitter in the ninth.

Cubs manager David Ross became the 11th person to catch and manage a no-hitter.  He was behind the plate for former Cub Jake Arrieta’s no-hitter back in 2016.

Mills had never pitched a complete game in the majors.  He was a walk-on in college at Tennessee-Martin and was cut by the Kansas City Royals.

Mills no-hitter was the 16th in Cubs franchise history.  It was also the second time a Cubs pitcher tossed a no-hitter at Miller Park.  Carlos Zambrano no-hit the Astros on Sept. 14, 2008 in a game moved from Houston because of Hurricane Ike.

The Brewers hit into 11 hard-hit outs, as tracked by StatCast.  Mills generated just five swings and misses in the game. [Read more…]

Brewers offense blows up in Detroit

September 10, 2020 By Bill Scott

Corbin Burnes

The Milwaukee Brewers have had plenty of opportunities to score runs over the last week but struggled to come up with the big hit to get it done.  They made up for it all in one game on Wednesday in Detroit.

The Brewers unleashed a 21-hit attack, clubbing five home runs and setting a franchise record with 13 extra base hits in a 19-0 win over the Tigers.

The bottom of the Brewers order did a lot of the damage too.  Orlando Arcia and rookie Tyrone Taylor had four hits each.  Luis Urias had three hits and five RBI and Jacob Nottingham added a two-run homer.

Jeff Gyorko hit a pair of solo home runs and Ryan Braun homered and drove in three runs.

The offense was just half of the winning equation.  Brewers right-hander Corbin Burnes put together his best outing of what is becoming a rock solid shortened season.  Burnes allowed just one hit over seven innings with no walks and 11 strikeouts.  He improved his record to 3-0 and saw his ERA drop to 1.99.

The Brewers are off on Thursday and open a big weekend series against the rival Cubs at Miller Park.

Brewer players Urias and Taylor slowed by wrist injuries

January 29, 2020 By Bill Scott

Newly acquired Milwaukee Brewers infielder Luis Urias and outfielder Tyrone Taylor are both recovering from surgery that is expected to slow their start to the upcoming season.

Urias, who was acquired from the San Diego Padres in a four-player trade in late November, has surgery on Tuesday for a broken hamate bone in his left hand.  He’s expected to be out for eight weeks.

That will likely mean Urias won’t be ready to start the regular season with the Brewers, opting for a minor league rehab start to the season instead.

Taylor had off-season surgery in November on his left wrist and is expected to be restricted from baseball activity when training camp opens in a couple of weeks.  He’ll be working his way back into baseball activities as the spring goes on.

The 26-year-old Taylor hit .269 in 92 games at Class AAA San Antonio, adding 14 home runs and 59 RBI.  He later appeared in 15 games with the Brewers as a September call-up, going 4 for 10 with one RBI.

Brewers getting help from the unexpected, take 3 of 4 from Cubs

September 9, 2019 By Bill Scott

Craig Counsell

Tyler Austin’s pinch-hit three-run homer snapped a 3-all tie in a five-run fourth inning, sending the Milwaukee Brewers to a 8-5 win over the Chicago Cubs in the series finale at Miller Park on Sunday.

Eric Thames also homered as Milwaukee took 3-of-4 in the series, doing what they had to do to get back into Wild Card playoff contention.  The Brewers dropped the series opener on Thursday night, then won three straight to climb to within two games of the Cubs for the final Wild Card spot.

Last week, manager Craig Counsell said if his team was going to have a chance, they were going to need to get contributions from backup players and that’s what he got this past weekend.

Austin’s home run off of Cubs starter Jon Lester was the biggest blow, but Tyrone Taylor got his first major league hit, an RBI single in the sixth and pitcher Brent Suter worked two innings of relief for his first win since June 21, 2018.

Eric Thames also homered against Lester, who gave up all eight runs.

The Brewers also pulled to within a half-game of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who lost in a walk-off to the Cincinnati Reds.  The Philadelphia Phillies won, so they stay tied with the Brewers.

The Brewers open a seven-game road trip with the first of a four game series tonight in Miami against the Marlins.  Jordan Lyles (10-8, 4.46) faces Miami’s Robert Dugger (0-1, 4.00) in the pitching matchup.
