Brewers to make five selections in 2020 Draft

June 9, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers will make five picks in the 2020 First-Year Player Draft, which starts at 6 p.m. CT on Wednesday night.  They will have the 20th overall selection in the opening round.

This years draft has been shortened from the usual 40 rounds to five rounds in a cost-cutting move because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This years draft is deep in college pitching, which means the Brewers could draft that position for the second straight season.  They made Mississippi State lefty Ethan Small their top pick in last year’s draft (28th overall).

The Brewers have single picks in rounds two through five on Thursday.  They traded their Competitive Balance Round B selection (No. 64) to Seattle over the offseason in the deal for catcher Omar Narvaez.

Wednesday nights opening round will be televised on the MLB Network and ESPN.  The rest of the draft will be conducted Thursday, beginning at 4 p.m.

Brewers make first round of Spring Training roster moves

March 10, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers made their first round of roster reductions, including prospects Corey Ray and Trey Supak who are both on the team’s 40-man roster.

The Brewers reassigned to minor-league camp were right-handers Jesus Castillo, Thomas Jankins, Drew Rasmussen and Miguel Sanchez, left-handers Clayton Andrews and Ethan Small, catchers Mario Feliciano and Payton Henry and third baseman Lucas Erceg.

“This is a group that, in our meetings, kind of knew they were on this path,” manager Craig Counsell said.  “They’re  here to help during spring training.  It’s a performance thing for a lot of these guys…just go have great years and then put (yourselves) on the radar.

“Obviously guys that are on the (40 man) roster are a little bit closer.  But for the rest of those guys, that’s the message, performance gets our attention.  I think we had a more extreme case of that last spring with Trent Grisham, who wasn’t even in our big-league camp at the start of spring and made a pretty big impact on us.”

Brewers win

The Brewers got solo home runs by Lorenzo Cain and Luis Castro to pull out a 2-1 win over the Seattle Mariners in Cactus League play.  The Brewers will face the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday.

Brewers sign first-round pick Ethan Small

June 25, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers have signed their first round draft pick, left-handed pitcher Ethan Small, who was selected by the team out of Mississippi State University in the first round (No. 28 overall) of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft.

The 22-year-old Small went 10-2 with a 1.93 ERA (107 innings pitched, 23 earned runs), 176 strikeouts, a 0.87 WHIP and a .164 opponent batting average across 18 starts this season as a redshirt junior with the Bulldogs.  Small helped lead the Bulldogs to their 11th appearance in the College World Series.

Small recorded double-digit strikeouts on 11 occasions on the way to establishing a new single-season program record and leading all NCAA Division 1 pitchers in strikeouts.  He finished the regular season third in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in ERA and ranked among Division 1 leaders in WHIP (2nd, 0.80) and ERA (13th).

Small was named the 2019 SEC Pitcher of the Year.  He earned First Team All-SEC honors and was named a First Team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).  He finished 16-6 with a 3.05 ERA and 318 strikeouts across 36 starts in three seasons as a Bulldog, becoming just the sixth Mississippi State pitcher with multiple 100-strikeout campaigns and the third to record 300 career punch outs.

With the signing of Small, the Crew has now agreed to terms with 22 of their 39 selections from the 2019 First-Year Player Draft.
