Brewers add second baseman Kolten Wong

The Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to a two-year deal with free-agent second baseman Kolten Wong.  The Athletic was first to report the deal, which is expected to pay Wong $18 million over two years with an option for a third year.  The deal is pending a physical.

Wong broke in the Major Leagues with St. Louis and played all eight years with the Cardinals.  He won the National League Gold Glove at second base each of the last two seasons.  The Cardinals declined a $12.5 million club option for 2021, instead paying him a $1 million buyout.

Adding Wong at second base will most likely move Keston Hiura to first base.  Hiura was the Brewers first-round draft pick in 2017 and has had throwing issues at second base.  He committed six errors in 49 games there last season and 22 total errors during his first two seasons in the majors. Brewers in the postseason, despite losing record

September 28, 2020 By Bill Scott

Craig Counsell

The Milwaukee Brewers could have clinched a playoff spot with a win in the regular season finale at St. Louis on Sunday.  Instead, they took the tough rout, falling to the Cardinals 5-2 and then depending on help.  They got the needed help when both Philadelphia and San Francisco both lost, giving the sub-.500 Brewers (29-31) a spot in the National League playoffs.

The Phillies 5-0 setback against Tampa Bay finished ahead of the Brewers.  But the Giants were giving the San Diego Padres a run for their money and the Brewers were watching in the clubhouse after their loss, as San Diego pulled out a 5-4 win.

The Brewers are the No. 8 seed in the National League and will face the top-seeded Los Angeles Dodgers (43-17) in a best-of-three series starting Wednesday night.

The Brewers are in and they’re not apologizing.

“We got ourselves a shot,” Manager Craig Counsell said.  “You’ve got to beat a really good team twice.  It’s the best team [Read more…]

Brewers drop opener in St. Louis, have little margin for error

September 25, 2020 By Bill Scott

Rookie Dylan Carlson homered, doubled and drove in three runs to lead the St. Louis Cardinals (28-26) to a 4-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers (27-29) at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on Thursday night.

The Cardinals trail the division leading Chicago Cubs by 2 1/2 games, while the Brewers may have put themselves in a situation to need to win out or at least capture three of their four remaining games to have a chance at the playoffs.

Their best chance was supposed to be Thursday night with Corbin Burnes (4-1) on the hill.  He entered with a 4-0 record and 1.77 ERA.  But Burnes didn’t have his good stuff and ended up leaving in the fourth inning with lower back discomfort, after allowing a home run for just the second time this season.

Three wins in the last four games would give the Brewers a 30-30 season and that may or may not be good enough to make the postseason.  They’ve now dropped three of their last four games, with a doubleheader against the Cardinals on Friday.

Tyrone Taylor and Eric Sogard delivered the only two run scoring hits for the Brewers.  Runs have been hard to come by most of the season.  Thursday night, the Brewers had nine hits, but went just 2 for 9 with runners in scoring position. [Read more…]

Brewers split twin bill with Cardinals

The Milwaukee Brewers earned a split of their Wednesday doubleheader with the St. Louis Cardinals at Miller Park, dropping the opener 4-2 before rebounding to win the nightcap 6-0.

Using a bullpen by committee in the game two victory, four relievers combined to blank the Cardinals on just two hits.  The Brewers scored four runs in the first inning, led by Ryan Braun’s 3-run homer.  It was the 350th home run in Braun’s career.

The Brewers also scored a pair of runs in the first inning of game one, giving them six in the opening frame in the doubleheader.  That’s one more first inning run than the five that the Brewers accumulated in the opening frame the first 46 games of the season.

Lefty Brent Suter started game two and tossed three scoreless innings.  Freddy Peralta earned the victory, pitching the fourth and fifth before Devin Williams and Eric Yardley closed out the shutout. [Read more…]

Brewers split with Cardinals, fall into 4th place in NL Central

September 15, 2020 By Bill Scott

Ryan Braun

The Milwaukee Brewers opened a 3-day, 5-game series against St. Louis, splitting a doubleheader with the Cardinals at Miller Park on Monday.

The Brewers won the series opener in comeback fashion, 2-1 in eight innings.  Ryan Braun’s run-scoring double and Keston Hiura’s sacrifice fly allowed the Brewers to climb within a game of the Cardinals for second place in the NL Central.  But St. Louis returned the favor by winning game two 3-2 in nine innings, moving back in front of the Brewers by two games for second place.  Cincinnati, which took two from the Pirates, slid past the Brewers and into third place in the division.

The Brewers struck out 16 times and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position in game two.  The Brewers two runs came on a two-run homer by Jedd Gyorko in the fourth inning.

The Brewers had their hottest pitcher on the mound in game two, but Corbin Burnes ran his pitch count up and left in the 5th with 101 pitches.  The 4 2/3 innings pitched for Burnes, was his second shortest outing of the season.  But he did strikeout 10.

The Brewers had several chances in the final innings but couldn’t find a way to plate any additional runs.

In the opener, Josh Lindblom allowed just three hits and struck out six over five shutout innings, his best performance since joining the Brewers.

The Brewers and Cardinals play a single game on Tuesday night at Miller Park.  Brett Anderson (2-3, 4.64) gets the starting nod for the Brewers.  Jack Flaherty (3-1, 3.08) goes for the Cardinals.

The Brewers are 21-25 on the season with 14 games left in the regular season.

Brewers home opener postponed

July 31, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers home opener this afternoon against the St. Louis Cardinals at Miller Park has been postponed and rescheduled as a doubleheader on Sunday.

The rescheduling is the result of two positive COVID-19 tests in the Cardinals organization.  Major League Baseball made the move to allow enough time for additional testing and contact tracing to be conducted.

Saturday’s game between the two teams will remain as scheduled at 6:10 p.m..

The Cardinals are in Milwaukee, but have been instructed to self-isolate in their hotel in Milwaukee.

Major League Baseball will continue to provide updates as appropriate.

Braun’s grand slam powers Brewers to comeback win

The Milwaukee Brewers were down to their last strike in the 9th inning on Sunday afternoon before Ryan Braun drove a 3-2 pitch into the left-center field stands for a 7-4 lead and eventual 7-6 victory.

Braun’s blast allowed the Brewers to stay within one-game of the Chicago Cubs for the second National League wild card spot.  They’re 2 1/2 games behind Washington for the top wild card position and just three games behind the Cardinals for the Central Division lead.

The Cubs, who swept the Pirates over the weekend, are just two games behind the Cardinals with the two teams playing each other seven times in the final two weeks of the season.

St. Louis reliever John Gant walked the bases loaded with one out in the top of the ninth and the Cardinals leading 4-3.  Reliever Tyler Webb came on to get Mike Moustakas with a shallow fly ball to center field. [Read more…]

Thames powers Brewers past Astros

September 4, 2019 By Bill Scott

Eric Thames

Eric Thames’ three-run homer capped a four-run third inning and the Milwaukee Brewers went on to double up the Astros 4-2 at Miller Park.  Thames homer came off of Houston starter Zach Greinke.  Ryan Braun’s RBI single tied it at one for the Brewers, before Thames long ball.

Jordan Lyles continued his strong performance on the mound, throwing 6 1/3 innings.  Drew Pomeranz followed with  1 2/3 innings of solid relief before Josh Hader finished up in the 9th for his 28th save.

Lyles (10-8), surrendered six hits, struck out two and didn’t issue a walk.  His ERA in seven starts for the Brewers, dropped to 2.56.

With the Brewers leading 4-1 in the sixth, Houston’s Alex Bregman clubbed a solo homer to center to make it 4-2 to close out the scoring.

The Brewers have the day off on Wednesday before opening a crucial four-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Miller Park on Thursday night.  Chase Anderson is scheduled to face Jose Quintana in the series opener. [Read more…]

Keston Hiura homered, doubled and drove in three runs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Miller Park on Wednesday.

Jordan Lyles allowed one run and struck out nine while pitching into the sixth to earn the victory.  It’s his fourth win since joining the Brewers.

Josh Hader closed out the win with a six-out save, the 26th of the season and first since August 5th.

Kolton Wong had three of the Cardinals seven hits, including a shot home run off of Lyles.

The Brewers got to Cardinals starter and loser Jack Flaherty early, scoring once in each of the first two innings.  Hiura drove in the first run with an rbi groundout.

Ryan Braun scored the second run on a sac fly by Orlando Arcia.

The Brewers increased their lead to 3-0 in the fourth when Hiura homered to left on a 3-0 pitch. [Read more…]

Brewers drop third straight, falling further behind in wild card race

August 28, 2019 By Bill Scott

Craig Counsell

Yadier Molina hit two home runs and the St. Louis Cardinals extended their winning streak to six games with a 6-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park on Tuesday night.

Miles Mikolas struck out 10 without a walk to earn the win for St. Louis, which has now won 15 of its last 18 games.

The game was delayed in the seventh inning for nine minutes after the Brewers got caught by a pop-up shower while the roof was open.

Yasmani Grandal drew the Brewers to within 4-3 in the eighth inning, clubbing a two-run homer.  But when the Brewers couldn’t draw even, manager Craig Counsell went to rookie Devin Williams in the 9th, instead of closer Josh Hader.  The Cardinals tacked on two more in the ninth to make it 6-3.

The Brewers put two runners aboard in the bottom of the 9th and for a brief moment looked like they [Read more…]
