Former Milwaukee Brewers reliever Jeremy Jeffress signed a free agent deal with the rival Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old Jeffress had three separate stints with the Brewers before they finally released him on September 1, 2019.  He reportedly signed a major-league contract worth $850,000 and has games-pitched incentives that could add as much as another $200,000.

Jeffress started the 2019 season on the injured list after experiencing shoulder weakness.  He ended up appearing in 48 games, posting a 5.02 ERA.

Jeffress was a first-round draft pick of the Brewers in 2006 and was traded to Kansas City in the 2010 deal that brought Zach Greinke to Milwaukee.  His best season came in 2018 when he went 8-1 with a 1.29 ERA in 73 games with 15 saves.  He also made the all-star team that season.

Jeffress is the second former Brewers player to sign with the Cubs.  They also added utility infielder Hernan Perez.

September 4, 2019 By Bill Scott

Eric Thames

Eric Thames’ three-run homer capped a four-run third inning and the Milwaukee Brewers went on to double up the Astros 4-2 at Miller Park.  Thames homer came off of Houston starter Zach Greinke.  Ryan Braun’s RBI single tied it at one for the Brewers, before Thames long ball.

Jordan Lyles continued his strong performance on the mound, throwing 6 1/3 innings.  Drew Pomeranz followed with  1 2/3 innings of solid relief before Josh Hader finished up in the 9th for his 28th save.

Lyles (10-8), surrendered six hits, struck out two and didn’t issue a walk.  His ERA in seven starts for the Brewers, dropped to 2.56.

With the Brewers leading 4-1 in the sixth, Houston’s Alex Bregman clubbed a solo homer to center to make it 4-2 to close out the scoring.

Brewers rebound to beat Dodgers with late rally

August 16, 2014 By Bill Scott

Things were looking grim for the Milwaukee Brewers, trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-0 heading to the 8th.  They they broke it open with five runs and went on to beat the Dodgers 6-3.

The Brewers started their rally against Dodgers reliever Jamey Wright, who pitched for the Brewers back in 2001.  Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez singled before Scooter Gennett added a runs coring single.  Khris Davis then tied the game with a double in right-center.  After an intentional walk to Mark Reynolds, Brandon League came in to strike out pinch-hitter Rickie Weeks.  With two outs and the bases loaded, Lyle Overbay emptied the bases with a three-run double to left.

Rookie Jimmy Nelson didn’t get the win, but he did give the Brewers a chance to win, holding the Dodgers to two runs over six innings.

Former Brewers pitcher Zach Greinke left after five shutout innings, holding the Brewers to just two hits.  But Greinke had to exit with a high pitch count and he remains winless against his former team.

Yasiel Puig had three hits and drove in two of the Dodgers runs in defeat.

The Brewers send Yovani Gallardo to the mound in game two of the  series tonight, against the Dodgers Clayton Kershaw.

The Brewers stayed two games in front of the Cardinals atop the NL Central.

Jeffress has peaked the Brewers curiosity (AUDIO)

Jeremy Jeffress

The Milwaukee Brewers relief corp has been solid from the left side with Will Smith, Zach Duke and now Tom Gorzelanny.  From the right side,

closer Francisco Rodriguez has been rock solid, but injuries to Jim Henderson and Tyler Thornburg and inconsistency from Brandon Kintzler and Rob Wooten has left a once rock solid bullpen a bit short.

Enter newly recalled Jeremy Jeffress who made Brewers 2014 debut on Wednesday.  He pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the Cincinnati Reds
5-1 at Miller Park.  Jeffress opened some eyes with fast balls clocked at 97, 98, 99 and eventually 100 miles per hour.

It’s the second tour with the Brewers for Jeffress, who was the teams first-round draft pick in 2006.  He’s been held back by control issues on the mound and drug-related suspensions.  He pitched in 10 games for the Brewers in 2010, but was traded to Kansas City in the Zach Greinke deal.  [Read more…]

Greinke offers opinion on Braun suspension

July 26, 2013 By Bill Scott

Former Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Zach Greinke waited a couple of days to react to Ryan Braun’s 65-game suspension handed down by Major

Zach Greinke

Zach Greinke

League Baseball.

But when Greinke finally talked to the Los Angeles Times, he pulled no punches.

“The main this is, yeah, he lied to us,” Greinke said.  “He forced us to lie for him, threw people under the bus in order to help himself out and didn’t care, blamed others for his mistakes and it’s just a lot of things you don’t expect from people.”

Greinke said everyone believed Braun when he said he’d never used PED’s.

“Everything was so convincing.  He had people to blame.  He seemed like a really good guy.  He as a good teammate at the time.  You don’t know the guys that he was pinning it on.  I’m not positive, but I think everyone 100% believed him at the time.

Greinke is also waiting for Braun to issue an apology.  Braun’s only sign of an apology so far has been in the statement released by Major League Baseball announcing the suspension.

Brewers to work out today

July 12, 2012 By Bill Scott

Major League Baseball’s all-star break continues for one more day before the

Doug Melvin

second half of the season resumes Friday.

The Milwaukee Brewers will work out today before opening the second half of the season Friday night at home against the division leading Pittsburgh Pirates.  The Brewers start the second half 5-games under .500, trailing the Pirates by 8-games.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin has a handful of takers, if he wants to deal ace pitcher Zach Greinke.  But Melvin still seems interested in seeing how the team comes out of the gates in the second half before making any deals. [Read more…]

Brewers bullpen leads team to win

July 9, 2012 By Bill Scott

After being kicked out of Saturday’s game in the 1st inning, Zach Greinke

Corey Hart

started Sunday’s game for the Milwaukee Brewers in Houston.  Greinke struggled right out of the gate, allowing three first inning runs.  He was removed after 3.  But five Brewer relievers combined to hold the Astros to 2-hits the rest of the way and Milwaukee rebounded for a 5-3 win.

Corey Hart drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the 10th inning and Rickie Weeks added some insurance  with a run scoring single.  Weeks had three hits to help the Brewers. [Read more…]
