Brewers drop series opener against Seattle

June 26, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Seattle Mariners had 12 hits to pull out a 8-3 series opening win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park on Tuesday night.  Daniel Vogelbach clubbed a 2-run homer and starter Marco Gonzales (9-6) pitched five innings to earn his fourth straight win to lead the Mariners.

Four Seattle relievers shut the Brewers down over the final four innings.

The Brewers jumped out early with a run in the first, but the Mariners rebounded with a four-run third inning off of Brewers starter Zach Davies.  Davies fell to 7-2 after allowing 6-runs on 6-hits in four innings of work.

Dee Gordon’s run-scoring double in the fifth extended the Mariners lead to 7-1.

Yasmani Grandal hit a solo homer and Jesus Aguilar had a run-scoring single for the Brewers in the fifth. [Read more…]

Brewers’ Nelson suffers arm fatigue

February 25, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jimmy Nelson

Milwaukee Brewers right-handed pitcher Jimmy Nelson has been shut down for a few days after experiencing what is being termed “arm fatigue” by team officials.

Nelson is trying to make his way back from a shoulder injury that saw him miss the entire 2018 season while recovering from surgery.

GM David Stearns told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he’s not concerned right now.  They’re skipping a bullpen session and will wait until Nelson feels he’s ready to throw again.

“He didn’t play catch over the weekend,” manager Craig Counsell said.  “There was just a little discomfort, and so we just went slow.  It’s a very minor setback, and he’ll be back out tomorrow playing catch and moving forward again.

“I think he is close to pitching in a game, but it’s not going to be this week.  He’s going to have to face hitters first, so he’s got some steps to go.  Look, we’re being conservative.  That’s first.  There’s no red flags beyond that.  It was really just three days we’ve slowed him down.

“It’s just part of the bumps in the road in this thing that we need to get through.” [Read more…]

Brewers acquire left-handed reliever from the Rangers

December 13, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired left-handed pitcher Alex Claudio from the Texas Rangers in exchange for Competitive Round A pick in the 2019 First-Year Player Draft.

Claudio, who turns 27 on January 31, is 13-6 with a 3.20 ERA and 12 saves in 208 career games (2 starts) over five Major League seasons, all with Texas.  He went 4-2 with a 4.48 ERA and 1 save in a team-leading 66 games (1 start) in 2018.  Claudio led the Rangers in appearances for the second straight season.

Claudio posted a 1.80 ERA over his last 11 appearances in 2018 (10 ip, 2 er) as opponents hit just .206 during that stretch.

Brewers sign Nelson

The Brewers avoided arbitration with right-handed pitcher Jimmy Nelson, signing him to a $3.7 million deal for next season.

Nelson missed all of last season while rehabbing from right shoulder surgery.  He’s expected to go to training camp this spring as a full participant.  He’ll be battling with a big group of starting pitchers for spots in the rotation.  That group includes Jhoulys Chacin, Chase Anderson, Zach Davis, Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, Freddy Peralta, Junior Guerra and Adrian Houser.

It’s possible the Brewers will take it slow with Nelson, but barring any setbacks, he is expected to pitch in Milwaukee this coming season.

Nelson to undergo surgery on Tuesday

September 16, 2017 By Bill Scott

Jimmy Nelson

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Jimmy Nelson will undergo surgery on his injured right shoulder on Tuesday in Los Angeles.  He won’t know until after the procedure just what his recovery time will be.

Nelson suffered an anterior labrum tear and rotator cuff strain Sept. 8 in Chicago while diving back into first base.

Orthopedic surgeon Neal ElAttrache of the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic will perform the surgery.

Nelson was having his best season, going 12-6 with a 3.49 ERA in 29 starts before the injury.  He had registered 199 strikeouts in 175 1/3 innings.

Brewers grab series opener from Cubs (AUDIO)

September 9, 2017 By Bill Scott

Ryan Braun

Ryan Braun’s first inning two-run home run powered the Milwaukee Brewers to a 2-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs in the series opener at Wrigley Field on Friday night.

The Brewers are hoping victory doesn’t come with a price.  Starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson was forced to leave the game after five innings after a slide back into a base left him with right-arm soreness.  Nelson will undergo tests today.

Braun’s home run was his 15th this season and 300th of his career, making him the 12th active player in the major leagues to reach that mark.

Nelson (12-6) ended up allowing four hits and two walks while striking out seven.  The Brewers are hoping he won’t have to miss any starts.

The win is the 73rd of the season for the Brewers, which matches the victory total from 2016 (73-89), with 21 games left to play.  The Brewers remain tied with St. Louis for second place in the NL Central, four games behind the division leading Cubs.

Josh Hader pitched two perfect innings of relief before walking the leadoff man in the 8th.  Anthony Swarzak got three outs in the eighth and Corey Knebel pitched a scoreless ninth for his 33rd save.

Chase Anderson (8-3, 3.06) pitches game two of the series this afternoon, facing Chicago’s Mike Montgomery (5-7, 3.38).

Brewers swept by Reds, fall into 3rd place in Central

The Milwaukee Brewers were swept in three games by the last place Cincinnati Reds, dropping the series finale 7-1 on Wednesday at Great American Ball Park.

Reds rookie Luis Castillo allowed a run on four hits over eight innings, striking out 10 and walking nobody to earn his third win of the season.  The only run allowed came in the first on a Neil Walker home run.

The Brewers were outplayed and out scored (21-8) in the series, which saw them fall in to third place in the Central Division, a half game behind the second place St. Louis Cardinals and 4 1/2 games behind the division leading Cubs.  Had the Cubs not dropped the first two games of their series in Pittsburgh, the division may have been out of reach.  Fortunately for the Brewers, they still have plenty to play for between the wild card and the division, despite their laying down in Cincinnati. Reds beat Brewers in walk-off (AUDIO)

September 5, 2017 By Bill Scott

Craig Counsell

The Milwaukee Brewers got home runs from Ryan Braun and Orlando Arcia to forge a 4-4 tie with momentum on their side.  But Cincinnati leadoff hitter Billy Hamilton clubbed a two-out home run in the ninth inning off of rookie left-hander Josh Hader, giving the Reds a 5-4 walk-off victory.

Hamilton’s game winner came off of Brewers rookie reliever Josh Hader, who also allowed Washington to score twice in the eighth inning on Saturday in a 3-2 Nationals victory at Miller Park.

Hader, who primarily throws fastballs, got beat with his best pitch as Hamilton jumped on an inside corner fastball  for his first home run from the right side of the plate.

Braun’s home run for the Brewers was his first since August 12.  After Travis Shaw and Domingo Santana singled, Arcia ripped a hanging slider for a three-run homer to tie the game.

Chase Anderson got the start for the Brewers but was knocked out of the game in the 6th after Tucker Barnhart’s two-run double made it 4-0 Cincinnati with one out in the sixth.

The question is, will back-to-back losses hurt Josh Hader’s confidence?  First and foremost, he’ll need to see that the team still believes he can get the job done. [Read more…]

Brewers hold off Dodgers, capture series (AUDIO)

The Milwaukee Brewers capped off a three-city road trip by taking 2 of 3 from the Los Angeles Dodgers, pulling out a 3-2 victory on Sunday.  The Brewers went 5-4 on the road trip and return home to Milwaukee just two games behind the Central Division leading Chicago Cubs.

The Brewers became the first team to claim a series from the Dodgers since the first week of June.  The Dodgers had gone 19-0-3 in their previous 22 series.

Jimmy Nelson didn’t allow a hit until the sixth and ended up pitching 6 2/3 innings, allowing a pair of runs on four hits.  Nelson improved to 10-6 on the season with a 3.75 ERA.

The Brewers scored all of their runs off of Dodgers starter Yu Darvish, who made it through five innings.  A first inning error allowed the Brewers to jump out in front 1-0.  They scored two more in the third on a home run by Hernan Perez and a run-scoring single by Domingo Santana.  [Read more…]

Two run seventh keys Brewers victory

August 23, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers scored two runs in the seventh inning on Tuesday night to pull out a 4-3 win over the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

Ryan Braun tied the game in the seventh with a sacrifice fly off of reliever Albert Suarez and Travis Shaw followed with a run-scoring double with two outs to put the Brewers on top for good.

With the Chicago Cubs winning their game, the Brewers stayed 2 1/2 games back in the race for the National League Central division lead.  The Brewers are also three games behind Colorado for the last Wild Card spot in the National League.

The Giants looked like they had a chance to tie the game in the eighth inning but Hernan Perez, who took over for Domingo Santana in right field, threw out Nick Hundley at the plate, trying to score on Denard Span’s two-out single.

The Brewers collected just two runs on six hits in six innings off of Jeff Samardzija.

Starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson struggled through his five-inning start, allowing three runs.  Brandon Crawford clubbed a two run homer off of Nelson in the fifth to give the Giants a 3-2 lead.

The Brewers and Giants play the rubber match of the series this afternoon.  Matt Garza (6-7, 4.81) gets the nod for the Brewers.  First pitch time is set for 2:45 p.m.

Home run ball leads Brewers to comeback win (AUDIO)

August 17, 2017 By Bill Scott

Keon Broxton celebrates one of his two home runs.

The Milwaukee Brewers clubbed five home runs to come-from-behind and beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-6 at Miller Park on Thursday.

All seven runs came via the home run.  Centerfielder Keon Broxton clubbed two of the five home runs, giving him 19 for the season.  Neil Walker and Travis Shaw also went yard.  Manny Pina added the biggest of them all in the eighth.  After the Brewers fell behind in the top half of the inning, Pina clubbed a 2-run, opposite field homer to put the Brewers back in front and eventually pull out the win.

The Brewers fell behind 4-0 with Jimmy Nelson struggling early.  But Broxton and Walker clubbed home runs in the bottom half to make it a 4-3 game and the Brewers were right back in it.

Travis Shaw’s 26th home run of the season in the sixth inning pulled the Brewers back to even at 4-4.

The Pirates went up 5-4 in the seventh, but Broxton’s second home run of the game tied the game 5-5. [Read more…]
