Brewers fall to Dodgers in 13 innings, series tied 2-2

October 17, 2018 By Bill Scott

Christian Yelich is hitting just .188 in the NLCS.

It took 13-innings before the Los Angeles Dodgers delivered the game winner to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 and even the NLCS at two-games apiece.

Cody Bellinger’s two-out single off Junior Guerra drove in Manny Machado with the game winner.

Guerra was the final of seven pitchers used by the Brewers.  Brewer pitchers allowed eight hits in 13 innings and struck out a postseason franchise-record 17 Dodgers.

Guerra was in his fourth inning of relief and retired the first batter before Manny Machado singled to left.  He moved to second on a wild-pitch and scored in Bellinger’s two-out single to right.

The game took 5 hours and 15 minutes to play, the second-longest NLCS game ever.

The two teams combined to use 16 pitchers and went a combined 2 for 18 with runners in scoring position, stranding a total of 21 base runners.

Bellinger also robbed Lorenzo Cain of an extra base hit in the 10th inning when he made a diving catch in right field.

Cain finished 0 for 6 with three strikeouts.  He’s hitting just .200 in the series.  Christian Yelich went 1 for 5 and is hitting just .188 in the series. [Read more…]

Brewer bats go silent in loss to Pirates

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped to 5-11 against the Pittsburgh Pirates this season, falling 3-2 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Miller Park.

The Brewers missed a chance to gain ground in the NL Central Division race after the Chicago Cubs fell 2-1 to the Cincinnati Reds.  Chicago’s lead remains 2 1/2 games on the Brewers in the Central.

Pittsburgh’s Trevor Williams held the Brewers to just two hits over six innings while striking out seven.  In two starts against the Brewers this season, Williams has shut them out for 13 innings, allowing just three base hits and striking out 14.

The Brewers didn’t score until the ninth inning when Jesus Aguilar and Domingo Santana hit back to back solo home runs to climb to within a single run before the late rally fell short.

Jhoulys Chacin (14-8) took the loss for the Brewers, pitching five innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits while striking out 4 and walking 3.

The Brewers will have to face the Pirates one more time, set to travel to Pittsburgh for a weekend series against the Pirates.  They’ll open a 3-game series with the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park tonight.

Cardinals earn split with the Brewers

After winning the first two games in the series, the Milwaukee Brewers dropped the last two, including Sunday’s 8-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Miller Park.

The Cardinals scored five runs in the fourth inning as they sent Brewers starter Jhoulys Chacin to an early shower.  Chacin (6-3) allowed all eight runs in 4 1/3 innings to take the loss.

Prior to Sunday, Chacin and Junior Guerra had been the teams two most reliable starting pitchers.  But Chacin started things off by walking leadoff man Matt Carpenter on four pitches and dealt with traffic on the bases in every inning he pitched.

Chacin continued his struggles against St. Louis, falling to 0-7 with a 6.90 ERA in nine career appearances.  He dropped to 0-2 with an 8.59 ERA in three starts against the Cardinals this season.

The Brewers lead early (2-1) as Christian Yelich belted a solo home run to left-center field.  But Lorenzo Cain and Jesus Aguilar were given the day off and third baseman Travis Shaw left in the third while still struggling with a sore right wrist.

The Brewers scored 11 runs in the series opening win over the Cardinals last Thursday, but they’ve scored just two runs in the last three games, losing the last two. [Read more…]

Brewers blank Diamondbacks 1-0 (AUDIO)

May 23, 2018 By Bill Scott

Craig Counsell

Domingo Santana’s sixth inning sacrifice fly held up as the Milwaukee Brewers blanked the Arizona Diamondbacks 1-0 on Tuesday night at Miller Park.

Jhoulys Chacin and three relievers combined on a three-hit shutout.  Chacin allowed just two hits and walked four over five innings, while Matt Albers picked up the win in relief.  Corey Knebel worked the ninth for his third save.  Josh Hader also worked two innings of relief in between.

Arizona’s Matt Koch retired the first 11 Brewers he faced before Lorenzo Cain lined a single to left in the fourth.  Two batters later, Arizona centerfielder Jarrod Dyson took a three-run home run away from Domingo Santana.

Ji-Man Choi clubbed a leadoff double in the sixth inning and eventually scored on Santana’s sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell was ejected in the 9th inning for arguing balls and strikes.  But Counsell was really protecting his pitcher and catcher, Corey Knebel and Manny Pina.  Both were heated in the final inning when the home plate umpire missed multiple strike calls which had the Brewers fuming down the stretch.

The Brewers will play for the sweep this afternoon, sending Brent Suter to the mound against Arizona’s Zach Godley.

Brewers use long ball to beat Diamondbacks

May 17, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers clubbed four home runs in the first four innings en route to a 8-2 win over the Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Wednesday.

Travis Shaw and Domingo Santana hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning.  Christian Yelich added a two-run shot in the second, and Tyler Saladino hit a solo shot in the fourth.

Brandon Woodruff pitched five innings, allowing only a solo home run to pick up the win, helping the Brewers to a 5-2 record on their 10-game road trip.  That trip will close with three games at Minnesota, starting Friday night.  The Brewers have the day off today.

Ryan Braun missed the entire series with back issues and could be headed for another stint on the disabled list. [Read more…]

Marte’s inside-the-park home run powers Pirates past Brewers

Starling Marte’s inside-the-park home run in the fifth inning proved to be the difference in Pittsburgh’s 6-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in the series opener at Miller Park on Friday night.

Corey Dickerson and David Freese also homered for Pittsburgh as the Pirates put an end to their four game losing streak.

Rookie Nick Kingham, who took a perfect game into the 7th inning against the Cardinals in his debut last week, pitched into the sixth inning against the Brewers last night to earn the win.

Junior Guerra (2-2) gave up five runs in five innings of work to take the loss for the Brewers.

Manny Pina and Domingo Santana homered in the loss.  The home run for Santana was his first of the season as the Brewers dropped to 19-14.

Game two of the series is today.

Brewers land much needed win

May 1, 2018 By Bill Scott

Josh Hader – File Photo by Bill Greenblatt/UPI

Manny Pina and Lorenzo Cain homered and Domingo Santana capped off a three-run rally in the seventh inning with a two-run double off of former Brewer Jared Hughes, sending the Milwaukee Brewers to a come-from-behind 6-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark.

It was a much-needed win for the Brewers after they were swept in a four-game series by the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.  The Brewers were shutout three times in that series, giving even more importance to the sudden burst of offense.

The Brewers led twice, only to lose it.  They took the lead for good in the seventh and this time, behind the left arm of Josh Hader, they held on.

Brandon Woodruff secured the win and Hader wound up striking out a career-high eight in just 2 2/3 innings to close it out.  Hader became the first reliever since the save became an official stat in 1969 to fan eight batters in a save of less than three innings.  He didn’t allow a hit and walked one while throwing 37 pitches.

Game two of the series is tonight (6:10 p.m.).  Chase Anderson (2-2, 2.86) pitches for the Brewers.  Homer Bailey (0-3, 4.19) goes for the Reds.

Brewers fall to Cardinals in extra innings

April 11, 2018 By Bill Scott

For the second night in a row, the Brewers and Cardinals needed extra innings to decide the outcome.  On Tuesday night, it was Matt Carpenter clubbing a two-run home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to beat the Brewers 5-3 in St. Louis.

Twice, the Brewers had late leads but couldn’t hold them.

Domingo Santana singled home Eric Thames to give Milwaukee a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning, only to see Tommy Pham score from second on a pair of wild pitches by Jacob Barnes to tie the game 2-2.

One inning later, Orlando Arcia singled in a run to put the Brewers up 3-2, but Greg Garcia’s RBI single in the bottom of the 10th would tie the game at 3. [Read more…]

Martinez cruises in Cardinals victory over the Brewers

April 5, 2018 By Bill Scott

After he struggled on opening day, Carlos Martinez returned to form on Wednesday night as the St. Louis Cardinals blanked the Milwaukee Brewers 6-0 to win the rubber game of their three-game series.

Martinez pitched 8 1/3 innings and struck out 10 Brewers.  Yadier Molina homered and the Cardinals took advantage of three Milwaukee errors in the win.

Jhoulys Chacin (0-1) allowed seven hits and six runs over 5 2/3 innings, but only three of the runs were earned.

The Brewers had some chances early, but couldn’t break through against Martinez.  The Cardinals ace went on to retire 16 straight batters before Domingo Santana lined a one-out single in the 7th.

The Brewers loaded the bases in the ninth, but there would be no late game heroics on Wednesday night.  Manny Pina hit into a double play to end the threat.

The Brewers are 4-2 after the loss, but the starting pitchers are just 1-2 during that same stretch.

Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich left the game in the seventh inning with right oblique stiffness.  Yelich is expected to get a day off today when the Brewers open a four game series against the Chicago Cubs.

Jon Lester pitches the series opener for the Cubs tonight.  Brent Suter gets the nod for the Brewers.

Braun open to moving back to infield

January 29, 2018 By Bill Scott

Ryan Braun: Photo by Bill Greenblatt/UPI

The recent additions of Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain give the Brewers a lot of depth in the outfield.  To alleviate the potential logjam, General Manager David Stearns confirmed on Friday that he had discussed with Ryan Braun, the idea of the veteran player to give first base a try in spring training.

At Sunday’s “Brewers On Deck” event, Braun said he’s ready to give it a shot if it helps the team.

Braun was drafted as an infielder and was named the National League’s Rookie of the Year in 2007 as a third baseman.  But he moved to the outfield in 2008 and hasn’t returned since.

The addition of Yelich and Cain means the Brewers will have two starters already set.  Then there’s Braun, Domingo Santana, Brett Phillips and Keon Broxton.

Santana has been floated as trade bait all off-season, but if he should return, the Brewers are going to want to have some flexibility.  Santana played in 151 games last season as the teams right fielder.  He hit .278 with 30 home runs and 85 RBI. [Read more…]
