Yelich powers Brewers past Pirates

August 6, 2019 By Bill Scott

Christian Yelich clubbed his league leading 38th and 39th home runs of the season, helping the Milwaukee Brewers knock off the Pittsburgh Pirates
9-7 in Pittsburgh on Monday night.

The second of Yelich’s home runs landed in the Allegheny River.

Rookie Trent Grisham got another start and drove in three runs, while Mike Moustakas also homered in the win.

Jordan Lyles picked up his sixth win of the year, pitching five innings against his former team as the Brewers ended their four-game losing streak.

Bryan Reynolds stole Moustakas’ first bid for a homer in the second at the left field wall, and then homered in the fourth for the Pirates.  Pablo Reyes hit a pinch-hit homer in the fifth and Kevin Newman added a bases clearing 3-run double in the eighth.  The Pirates have now lost three straight.

The Brewers didn’t gain any ground on the first place Cubs, who also beat Oakland 6-5 on Monday night.  But they did climb to within 1 1/2 games of second place St. Louis after the Cardinals were blanked by the L.A. Dodgers 8-0.

Game two of the series is tonight.  Chase Anderson gets the start for the Brewers.

Davies to the IL

The Brewers now have a third starting pitcher on the injured list.  Zach Davies is on the 10-day IL with back spasms.  Davies joins fellow starters Brandon Woodruff and Jhoulys Chacin, who are dealing with oblique injuries.

The Milwaukee Brewers salvaged the final game of their three game series with Cincinnati, but they lost another starting pitcher in the process.

Yasmani Grandal’s two-run single capped a three-run fifth inning as the Brewers pulled out a 5-4 win.

Keston Hiura had a solo homer in the fifth, while Ryan Braun clubbed a two-run homer in the first.

Matt Albers picked up the win and Freddy Peralta notched his first save.

Josh VanMeter went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI for Cincinnati, which had won three of its previous four.

Brewers starter Jhoulys Chacin struggled early, then left after three innings with a right oblique strain.  Chacin is expected to join Brandon Woodruff on the injured list, leaving the Brewers scrambling for starting pitching help. [Read more…]

July 24, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Cincinnati Reds scored four runs in the first inning and five more in the fifth on their way to a 14-6 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park on Tuesday night.

Eugenio Suarez went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI, Jesse Winker homered and Phillip Ervin hit a three-run triple as the Reds built up a 9-0 lead.

Tanner Roark picked up his sixth win, giving up two runs over five innings, helping the Reds win three of their last four.

Manny Pina was 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBI for the Brewers.  Zach Davies allowed seven runs in four-plus innings to take the loss, he fell to 8-3.

The Brewers are 9-19 against sub-.500 teams over the past month and a half but manager Craig Counsell said, “Who we’re playing doesn’t matter.  You’ve got to play a good game to win.”

The Brewers will try to salvage the final game of the series this afternoon.  Jhoulys Chacin gets the start for the Brewers.  Lucas Sims gets the nod for Cincinnati.

Brewers blanked 3-0; Yelich top seed in Derby

July 4, 2019 By [email protected]

Cincinnati – Sonny Gray allowed only four hits in eight innings and struck out 12 Brewers hitters to help the Reds beat the Brewers 3-0 Wednesday night in Cincinnati.

Yasiel Puig stayed hot, hitting his 19th home run of the season in the second inning.  Brewers starter Jhoulys Chacin turned in one of his better outings of the season, allowing just two runs over six innings with eight strikeouts.

Milwaukee managed just four singles off Gray, and didn’t have major league home run leader Christian Yelich in the lineup.  He was given the day off.

Cincinnati has won two of the first three games in the series.  They sent Luis Castillo to the mound on Thursday afternoon against Brandon Woodruff.  The Brewers are still a game up on the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central Division.

It’s also been announced that Yelich will be the top seed in baseball’s Home Run Derby, and compete against rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in round one next week in Cleveland.

Machado, Lucchesi lead Padres past Brewers

June 18, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jhoulys Chacin

Manny Machado homered and doubled to lead the San Diego Padres to a 2-0 shutout victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night in San Diego.

Joey Lucchesi threw seven shutout innings in a combined four-hitter and the Padres have now won three of their last four.  Lucchesi (6-4) held Milwaukee to just three hits while striking out five and walking three.  His outing was much needed, helping give a taxed Padres bullpen a rest after the Padres and Rockies combined for 92 runs in their last series.

Christian Yelich was the only Milwaukee base-runner to reach second base when he doubled in the sixth.  Yelich extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

Craig Stammen allowed one hit in the eighth and Kirby Yates pitched the ninth for his Major League leading 25th save.

Machado was suspended one game before the game for “aggressively arguing and making contact” with an umpire who had ejected him on Saturday night in Colorado.  He appealed the suspension and can play until his case is resolved.  He homered off of Brewers starter Jhoulys Chacin in the third.

Chacin (3-8) allowed two runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings, striking out seven and walking three.

The Brewers have lost four of their last six games.  They’ll send Brandon Woodruff (8-1, 3.87) to the mound in game two of the series on Tuesday night.  Left-hander Logan Allen is scheduled to make his big league debut for the Padres.

Eric Thames and Jesus Aguilar both homered as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Francisco Giants 5-3 on Sunday, salvaging the final game of their three-game series.

Chase Anderson lasted only four innings but allowed just three runs.  Matt Albers picked up the win out of the bullpen as the Brewers avoided being swept in the series.

Junior Guerra and Jeremy Jeffress followed Albers with a scoreless inning each before Josh Hader retired the last six hitters to record his 17th save of the season.

Kevin Pillar, Brandon Belt and Jeff Samardzija all notched an RBI for the Giants.  Samardzija took the loss, allowing four runs over five innings for the Giants, who saw their four-game winning streak come to an end.

The Brewers open a three game series in San Diego against the Padres on Monday night.  Jhoulys Chacin (3-7, 5.74) returns from the disabled list to pitch for the Brewers.  Joey Lucchesi (5-4, 4.11) goes for the Padres.

Mike Moustakas and Lorenzo Cain each drove in four runs as the Milwaukee Brewers knocked off the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-5 in the opener of a four game series at PNC Park on Thursday night.

Moustakas homered twice among his four hits, while Cain had two doubles.  Yasmani Grandal also had four hits and homered in the win.  Eric Thames added a solo shot as the Brewers won for the third time in the last four games, moving a half-game behind the idle Chicago Cubs atop the Central Division.

The Brewers had 18 hits on the night, 11 of them for extra bases.

Pittsburgh starter Joe Musgrove yielded five runs on 11 hits over six innings to take the loss as the Pirates fell to 3-8 in their last 11 games.  Colin Moran homered for the Pirates in the loss.

Chase Anderson pitched five innings for the Brewers, securing his third victory of the season.

The Pirates scored three times off of Corbin Burnes in the eighth to pull to within 7-5, but the Brewers came back with four runs in the ninth inning to put the game out of reach.

Jhoulys Chacin pitches game two of the four game series for the Brewers on Friday night.

Brewers drop 2 of 3 in Chicago

May 13, 2019 By Bill Scott

Appearing on ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball” for the first time in more than 5 1/2 years, the Milwaukee Brewers fell to the division rival Chicago Cubs 4-1 at Wrigley Field.

The Brewers won the series opener 7-0 on Friday, then dropped the next two.

Jhoulys Chacin brought a 2-2 record and 1.59 ERA into Sunday nights start against the Cubs but took the loss.  Chacin allowed two runs on six hits in six innings of work.

The Brewers scored their only run in the fourth inning when Jesus Aguilar singled home Christian Yelich.

Jon Lester gave up only one unearned run for Chicago, pitching into the seventh and striking out six to earn the win.  Kris Bryant had a three hit night for the Cubs, including a two-run home run off of Adrian Houser in the seventh.

The Brewers played without starting left fielder Ryan Braun, who was held out of the lineup with soreness in his left hamstring.  Braun did make a pinch hit appearance in the top of the 7th but struck out.

The Brewers open a four-game series against the Phillies in Philadelphia tonight.  Freddy Peralta (2-1, 6.75 ERA) gets the start for the Brewers.  Aaron Nola (3-0, 4.57) goes for the Phillies.

Brewers grind for series opening win

May 7, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers picked up their fourth straight win on Monday night, coming from behind to beat Washington 5-3 at Miller Park.

The Nationals jumped out in front with two in the first when Howie Kendrick clubbed a two-run homer off of Brewers starter Jhoulys Chacin.

Mike Moustakas singled to drive in Ben Gamel in the bottom of the first to cut the lead in half.  The Brewers would tie the game 2-2 in the second and it would stay that way until the 7th inning when Adam Eaton clubbed a solo homer off of Brewers reliever Alex Claudio to give the Nationals a 3-2 lead.

The Brewers came right back in the bottom half with two runs and Gamel drove in an insurance run with a single in the ninth.  Gamel finished the night with three hits.

Freddy Peralta will pitch in game two of the series for the Brewers tonight, but he won’t start.  Because of his early struggles, the Brewers will start reliever Adrian Houser and at some point, bring Peralta into the game.

Davies delivers solid outing in Brewers victory

May 6, 2019 By Bill Scott

Craig Counsell

Just when the Milwaukee Brewers needed a solid pitching performance the most, Zach Davies delivered.

The Brewers needed 18-innings to beat the New York Mets on Saturday night and their bullpen was running on empty.  So Craig Counsell asked his starter on Sunday to go the extra yard to help that bullpen.

Davies threw 7 2/3 innings and 118 pitches to lead the Brewers to a 3-2 victory on Sunday as the Brewers pulled off the three-game series sweep.

Lorenzo Cain drove in the games first run with a sacrifice fly.  Christian Yelich returned to the lineup after missing five games and clubbed his league leading 15th home run of the season.

Cain had to leave the game after being struck on the hand by a pitch.  X-rays were negative.

The Brewers normally don’t take their starting pitchers beyond the 100 pitch mark.  Davies was at 108 after seven innings, but manager Craig Counsell still sent him out for the 8th. [Read more…]
