Jordan Zimmerman announces retirement

May 11, 2021 By Bill Scott

Pitcher Jordan Zimmerman announced his retirement from Major League Baseball on Tuesday.  The Marshfield, WI native became the 11th Wisconsin-born player to play for the Brewers.  He made two relief appearances with the Brewers after signing as a free agent on Feb. 9.

Zimmerman retires after 13 seasons in the Major Leagues with Washington (2009-15), Detroit (2016-20) and Milwaukee (2021).  He went 95-91 with a 4.07 ERA in 279 career games, including 275 starts.  He was a two-time All-Star (2013-14) and author of the first no-hitter in Washington Nationals history on Sept. 28, 2014 vs. Miami.  he pitched in the postseason with the Nationals in 2012 and 2014.

Zimmerman issued just 1.92 walks per nine innings during his Major League career, trailing only Josh Tomlin (1.32) among active pitchers with at least 1,000 innings pitched.  He finished seventh in 2013 National League Cy Young Award voting after producing a career-high 19 wins.  he finished fifth in 2014 National League Cy Young Award voting after posting a career-best 2.66 ERA.  Zimmerman made 30+ starts four times (2012-15) and twice was an Opening Day starter (2018-19).

Zimmerman was selected by Washington in the second round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft out of the Division III University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.  He is a graduate of Auburndale (WI) High School.

Thames signs one-year deal with Nationals

January 7, 2020 By Bill Scott

Some thought that Eric Thames would eventually find his way back to Milwaukee, but the slugging first baseman instead, signed a one-year deal worth a reported $3-million with the defending World Series Champion Washington Nationals.

According to the Athletic, Thames will earn $3-million this season with a mutual option for 2021 worth $4-million and a $1-million buyout.

The Brewers added free agent first baseman Justin Smoak, making Thames somewhat expendable.

In three seasons with the Brewers, Thames hit .241 with 72 home runs and 161 RBI in 383 games.  He’s expected to share time in Washington with returning veteran Howie Kendricks.

Brewers drop heart breaker to Nationals in wildcard game

October 2, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers jumped out to a 3-0 lead and dominated the National League wildcard game until the eighth inning.  Manager Craig Counsell had his pitchers lined up just the way he wanted with Josh Hader coming on for a six-out save.

But a little wildness, a controversial hit batsman, a broken bat single and a outfield fielding error turned around a 3-1 deficit and gave the Washington Nationals a 4-3 win and the right to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in a National League Division Series.

After a leadoff walk in the first to Trent Grisham, Yasmani Grandal lined a home run to right to put the Brewers up 2-0.  Eric Thames increased the lead to 3-0 in the second inning with a long solo home run. [Read more…]

Cain to start for the Brewers in WC game tonight

October 1, 2019 By Bill Scott

Lorenzo Cain – File Photo

Lorenzo Cain was placed on the Milwaukee Brewers 25-man wildcard roster earlier today.  The Brewers released their projected starting lineup moments ago and to no surprise, Cain is listed as the starting center fielder and batting in the seven spot.

Cain re-injured his left ankle on Saturday night in a ninth-inning collision at home plate at Coors Field.  On Monday, he said he wanted to play and would do whatever it took to get on the field.  Twenty-Four hours later and Cain is ready to give it a shot in the winner-take-all wild card playoff game against the Washington Nationals in Washington D.C.

The Brewers starting lineup is as follows: [Read more…]

Brewers fall short in Denver, settle for NL Wildcard game (AUDIO)

September 30, 2019 By Bill Scott

Craig Counsell

The Milwaukee Brewers missed a golden opportunity to tie or win the National League’s Central Division and capped the regular season by being swept by the Colorado Rockies in Denver.

The Chicago Cubs beat St. Louis twice on Friday and Saturday, but the Brewers failed to take advantage.  Then Sunday, with the Cubs being blown out by the Cardinals (9-0), Brewers manager Craig Counsell called off the dogs, resting his regulars by removing them from the game and putting all focus on the wildcard playoff game in Washington on Tuesday night.  The Brewers fell to the Rockies 4-3 in 13-innings when Jake Faria allowed the winning run to score on a wild pitch.

The Brewers led 3-0 in the seventh on home runs by Yasmani Grandal and Hernan Perez, but manager Craig Counsell had already started the process of pulling players.  Adrian Houser started and tossed four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with one walk and five strikeouts. [Read more…]

Tough day for Brewers pitching staff

August 19, 2019 By Bill Scott

Chase Anderson – File Photo by Bill Greenblatt/UPI

Less than 24 hours after giving up 14 runs and winning in 14 innings, the Brewers needed a solid starting pitching performance to help with a worn out pitching staff.  They didn’t get the performance they were looking for, falling to the Washington Nationals 16-8 on Sunday.

Washington tied a franchise record by belting eight home runs.  Brewers starter Chase Anderson gave up 10 of those runs while not making it out of the third inning (2 1/3 innings).

The Nationals jumped out to a 13-0 lead, clubbing five of their eight home runs during that stretch.

It was a surprise that Anderson couldn’t hold the Nationals in check.  In three August outings, Anderson posted a 1.86 ERA and has been rock solid since the all-star break. [Read more…]

Woodruff leads Brewers to sixth straight win

May 9, 2019 By Bill Scott

Brandon Woodruff allowed just one run and four hits to the Washington Nationals over six innings, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-3 victory on Wednesday afternoon.  Woodruff struck out nine and didn’t walk anybody as he improved to 5-1.  His ERA dropped from 5.81 to 4.25.

The Brewers moved seven games over .500 (23-16) as they pulled to within a half game of the division leading Cubs.  Milwaukee went 8-2 on their 10-game home stand.

Christian Yelich had three hits, including his league-leading 16th home run of the season.  Fifteen of his 16 home runs have come at Miller Park.

Matt Albers surrendered a pair of runs in the seventh inning and the Nationals had enough runners aboard in the ninth to create a save situation for closer Josh Hader, slammed the door on his 10th save of the season.

The Brewers are off on Thursday and will head to Chicago for the start of a three game series against the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Friday.  Gio Gonzalez (0-0, 2.61 ERA) pitches for the Brewers.  Jose Quintana (4-1, 3.40) will go for the Cubs.

Brewers blank Nationals for fifth straight win

May 8, 2019 By Bill Scott

Lorenzo Cain – File Photo / Bill Greenblatt UPI

Lorenzo Cain broke a scoreless tie with a three-run double off of Stephen Strasburg in the seventh inning to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-0 win over the Washington Nationals at Miller Park.

Adrian Houser made his second spot start of the season for the Brewers, but this time his outing was only to get the ball rolling before giving way to Freddy Peralta.  Houser pitched two scoreless innings and Peralta followed with five scoreless frames for the win.

The Brewers employed the pitching strategy after Peralta gave up nine runs in four innings in his last start.  He improved to 2-1 with the win.

Strasburg (3-2) struck out 11 before the Brewers got him in the seventh.  They scored all six of their runs in that frame.

Cain’s double ended the night for Strasburg and reliever Dan Jennings gave up an RBI single to Mike Moustakas.  The Brewers then added two more runs in the seventh on Ben Gamel’s bases-loaded walk and Jesus Aguilar’s RBI single off Justin Miller.

The Brewers and Nationals wrap up their three-game series this afternoon at Miller Park.  Brandon Woodruff (4-1, 4.71 ERA) gets the nod for the Brewers.  Jeremy Hellickson (2-0, 5.33) goes for the Nationals, who have dropped three straight.

Brewers grind for series opening win

May 7, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers picked up their fourth straight win on Monday night, coming from behind to beat Washington 5-3 at Miller Park.

The Nationals jumped out in front with two in the first when Howie Kendrick clubbed a two-run homer off of Brewers starter Jhoulys Chacin.

Mike Moustakas singled to drive in Ben Gamel in the bottom of the first to cut the lead in half.  The Brewers would tie the game 2-2 in the second and it would stay that way until the 7th inning when Adam Eaton clubbed a solo homer off of Brewers reliever Alex Claudio to give the Nationals a 3-2 lead.

The Brewers came right back in the bottom half with two runs and Gamel drove in an insurance run with a single in the ninth.  Gamel finished the night with three hits.

Freddy Peralta will pitch in game two of the series for the Brewers tonight, but he won’t start.  Because of his early struggles, the Brewers will start reliever Adrian Houser and at some point, bring Peralta into the game.

Brewers power past Nationals

September 3, 2018 By Bill Scott

Christian Yelich clubbed a grand slam and Keon Broxton added a three-run homer during a seven-run fifth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers rolled to a 9-4 win over the Washington Nationals in D.C.

Mike Moustakas had a two-run single in the first inning for Milwaukee, which took two-of-three in the series.

Brandon Woodruff picked up the win with four scoreless innings of relief.  Junior Guerra made it through just three innings, allowing five hits, two walks and four runs.  His ERA climbed to 7.62 since mid-July.  It would be unbelievable to think that the Brewers would send Guerra out for another start.  They have a number of options, including lefty Gio Gonzalez, who the Brewers acquired in a trade last week.

Yelich improved his average to .316 with 27 home runs and 81 RBI.

The Brewers open a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Miller Park on Monday afternoon.  Zach Davies (2-5, 5.23) gets the start for the Brewers.  Cole Hamels (4-0, 0.69) gets the nod for the Cubs.
