The Milwaukee Brewers exercised club options for $8.5 million on pitcher Chase Anderson and $7.5 million on first baseman Eric Thames on Monday.  They traded Anderson to the Toronto Blue Jays for minor league 1B/OF Chad Spanberger.  They payed a $1 million buyout to Thames.

The Brewers also exercised an option on catcher Manny Pina for $1.85 million for 2020.

The moves clear around $15 million off the books for the coming season.

Anderson went 8-4 with a 4.21 ERA over 139 innings last season.  He spent four seasons with the Brewers, going 38-27 with a 3.83 ERA in 118 games (112 starts).

The 24-year-old Spanberger has hit 59 home runs in 305 minor-league games, including 13 homers and [Read more…]

The Milwaukee Brewers stayed hot, winning their fifth straight game, 4-2 over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark on Tuesday night.  It’s the 16th win in the last 18 games and moved the Brewers to 18-4 in the month of September.

With the Chicago Cubs falling to the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-2, the Brewers magic number to clinch a wildcard playoff spot is now down to one.

Sonny Gray entered the game for Cincinnati with a 2-0 record and 1.85 ERA in four starts against the Brewers this season.  But the Brewers got three early runs off of him and let their bullpen do the rest.

Cincinnati scored first, on back-to-back doubles from Joey Votto and Aristedes Aquino in the bottom of the first inning.  The Reds increased their lead to 2-0 after Ryan Braun’s attempt at a diving catch failed. [Read more…]

Brewers offense goes MIA in loss to Padres

September 19, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers were held to just three hits and fell to the San Diego Padres 2-1 at Miller Park on Wednesday night.

Padres starter Dinelson Lamet struck out 14 Brewers in his six innings of work to earn the win (3-5).  It snapped the Brewers four-game winning streak, as they lost for just the second time in the last 13 games.

The Padres scored first in the third inning.  Greg Garcia led off with a base hit and Seth Mejias-Brean followed with a home run to right-center field on a 0-2 pitch from Brewers starter Adrian Houser.

The Brewers put runners on second third in the bottom half of the inning with one out, but Lamet struck out Yasmani Grandal and Mike Moustakas to end the threat.

Houser (6-7) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits with no walks and five strikeouts in five [Read more…]

Brewers extend stay hot, pull into wild card tie

The Milwaukee Brewers managed just four hits against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night, but two of them went for home runs in a 3-1 victory at Miller Park.

Lorenzo Cain and Mike Moustakas both homered, with Moustakas’ blast breaking a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning.  Trent Grisham ended the scoring in the 8th with a sacrifice fly to center field in the eighth, driving in Ben Gamel, who reached on a double.

Brandon Woodruff got the start for the Brewers after being sidelined by an oblique injury since late July.  He pitched two innings, allowing no hits, walking one and striking out four.  He reached 99 on the radar gun and was working his fastball in the upper 90’s throughout his two innings of work.

Gio Gonzalez took over in the third, the first of four relievers to finish off the Padres.  Drew Pomeranz pitched the final two innings, recording six straight outs, four by strikeout.

The Padres only run came when Hunter Renfroe hit a solo home run to left field off of Matt Albers in the top of the seventh.

The win was the 82nd of the season for the Brewers, officially clinching their third straight winning season.

Game three of the four game series is Wednesday night.  Adrian Houser gets the start for the Brewers.

Ryan Braun – File Photo by Bill Greenblatt/UPI

The Milwaukee Brewers were down to their last strike in the 9th inning on Sunday afternoon before Ryan Braun drove a 3-2 pitch into the left-center field stands for a 7-4 lead and eventual 7-6 victory.

Braun’s blast allowed the Brewers to stay within one-game of the Chicago Cubs for the second National League wild card spot.  They’re 2 1/2 games behind Washington for the top wild card position and just three games behind the Cardinals for the Central Division lead.

The Cubs, who swept the Pirates over the weekend, are just two games behind the Cardinals with the two teams playing each other seven times in the final two weeks of the season.

St. Louis reliever John Gant walked the bases loaded with one out in the top of the ninth and the Cardinals leading 4-3.  Reliever Tyler Webb came on to get Mike Moustakas with a shallow fly ball to center field. [Read more…]

Ryan Braun clubbed a two-run homer in the third inning and the Milwaukee Brewers held on to knock off the Miami Marlins 3-2 in Miami on Thursday.

Mike Moustakas drove in the first run for the Brewers with a sac-fly in the first as Milwaukee swept the four game series with the Marlins, extending their win streak to seven straight games overall.

Gio Gonzalez started and worked four innings and the Brewers bullpen didn’t allow a single base runner over the final five innings, striking out ten of the 18 batters they faced.

Freddy Peralta picked up the win and Josh Hader posted his 31st save.

Hernan Perez came up with the key defensive play in the bottom of the first.  The Brewers second [Read more…]

September 12, 2019 By Bill Scott

Mike Moustakas returned to the Brewers lineup on his 31st birthday and celebrated by clubbing two home runs in a 7-5 Milwaukee victory over the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night.  It was their sixth straight victory, drawing even with the rival Chicago Cubs for the final wild card playoff spot in the National League.

Chicago fell to the San Diego Padres 4-0 in San Diego.

The Brewers played for the first time without star Christian Yelich, who is sidelined for six weeks with a fractured right kneecap.

Moustakas’ first home run of the night came in the third.  Cory Spangenberg singled to lead off and Yasmani Grandal followed with a walk to bring [Read more…]

Brewers avoid being no-hit, fall to Cardinals

August 20, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers were flirting with being no-hit in their Monday night series opener with the Cardinals in St. Louis.  But Yasmani Grandal doubled down the right-field line to end the Cardinals no-hit bid.  St. Louis still pulled out a 3-0 victory.

Dakota Hudson held the Brewers without a hit for 6 2/3 innings before he was removed from the game.  Giovanny Gallegos came out of the bullpen to get the final out in the 7th.

Andrew Miller took over for Gallegos with two outs in the 8th and the Brewers rallying.  But the Cardinals [Read more…]

Tough day for Brewers pitching staff

August 19, 2019 By Bill Scott

Chase Anderson – File Photo by Bill Greenblatt/UPI

Less than 24 hours after giving up 14 runs and winning in 14 innings, the Brewers needed a solid starting pitching performance to help with a worn out pitching staff.  They didn’t get the performance they were looking for, falling to the Washington Nationals 16-8 on Sunday.

Washington tied a franchise record by belting eight home runs.  Brewers starter Chase Anderson gave up 10 of those runs while not making it out of the third inning (2 1/3 innings).

The Nationals jumped out to a 13-0 lead, clubbing five of their eight home runs during that stretch.

It was a surprise that Anderson couldn’t hold the Nationals in check.  In three August outings, Anderson posted a 1.86 ERA and has been rock solid since the all-star break. [Read more…]

Yelich powers Brewers past Pirates

August 6, 2019 By Bill Scott

Christian Yelich (File Photo)

Christian Yelich clubbed his league leading 38th and 39th home runs of the season, helping the Milwaukee Brewers knock off the Pittsburgh Pirates
9-7 in Pittsburgh on Monday night.

The second of Yelich’s home runs landed in the Allegheny River.

Rookie Trent Grisham got another start and drove in three runs, while Mike Moustakas also homered in the win.

Jordan Lyles picked up his sixth win of the year, pitching five innings against his former team as the Brewers ended their four-game losing streak.

Bryan Reynolds stole Moustakas’ first bid for a homer in the second at the left field wall, and then homered in the fourth for the Pirates.  Pablo Reyes hit a pinch-hit homer in the fifth and Kevin Newman added a bases clearing 3-run double in the eighth.  The Pirates have now lost three straight.

The Brewers didn’t gain any ground on the first place Cubs, who also beat Oakland 6-5 on Monday night.  But they did climb to within 1 1/2 games of second place St. Louis after the Cardinals were blanked by the L.A. Dodgers 8-0.

Game two of the series is tonight.  Chase Anderson gets the start for the Brewers.

Davies to the IL

The Brewers now have a third starting pitcher on the injured list.  Zach Davies is on the 10-day IL with back spasms.  Davies joins fellow starters Brandon Woodruff and Jhoulys Chacin, who are dealing with oblique injuries.
