Arcia’s pinch hit leads to Brewers victory

September 1, 2020 By Bill Scott

Orlando Arcia

Orlando Arcia’s two out, pinch-hit single in the eighth inning gave the Milwaukee Brewers a 6-5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night at Miller Park.

Ben Gamel led off the eighth with a double and eventually scored on Arcia’s hit as the Brewers took three of four in the series from Pittsburgh.

The Brewers went with a bullpen by committee approach, giving lefty Brent Suter the start.  He went three innings and allowed one hit, a two-run homer off the bat of Erik Gonzalez in the third inning.  Suter had retired the first eight batters of the game before walking Pittsburgh’s Cole Tucker.

Keston Hiura gave the Brewers a 5-3 lead in the fifth, clubbing a leadoff home run off of Pirates starter Trevor Williams.  Hiura has four home runs in 10 games against the Pirates this season and 10 in 26 career games against Pittsburgh.

The Pirates tied the game 5-5 in the sixth on Jose Osuna’s two-run single off of reliever Freddy Peralta, but the Brewers would go ahead in the 8th.

Devin Williams (3-1), who was the fourth of five Brewers pitchers, struck out four and didn’t allow a hit in 1 1/3 innings for the win.  Josh Hader bounced back from his five walk performance to work the ninth for his eighth save of the season.  Hader has yet to give up a hit this season.

The Brewers open a two-game series against the Detroit Tigers at Miller Park on Tuesday night.  Josh Lindblom (1-2, 6.31) gets the start for the Brewers.  Michael Fullmer (0-0, 8.79) goes for the Tigers.

Brewers capture second straight over Reds

August 26, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers won their second straight on Tuesday night, 3-2 over the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park and the fifth inning will be one to remember.

Trailing 3-2, the Reds loaded the bases with no outs.  That’s when the Brewers started to get a few breaks.  Cincinnati’s Joey Votto was called out on strikes on a pitch that appeared to be inside.  Cincinnati’s next hitter, Nick Castellanos singled to right.  Brewers right fielder Ben Gamel played the ball on one hop and threw a strike home to force Freddy Galvis at the plate.  The umpire originally called Galvis safe after forgetting that the force was in order.  He was quickly corrected by Brewers manager Craig Counsell and he reversed the call.  Jesse Winker then popped out and Brewers ace Brandon Woodruff was out of the jam with no damage.

Woodruff (2-2) would pitch the sixth inning as well, finishing his night by allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and eight strikeouts.

Brent Suter struck out the side in the seventh.  Devin Williams pitched a scoreless eighth and Josh Hader came in to record his seventh save.  Hader has yet to allow a hit out of the bullpen this season.

Luis Castillo (0-4) was the tough luck loser for the Reds.  He pitched 6-innings, allowing three runs (1-earned) on five hits.  He walked four and struck out nine.

Game three of the four game series is Wednesday night at Miller Park.

Brewers drop home opener to White Sox

August 4, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers finally got to play a home opener at Miller Park, but it didn’t work out the way they had planned.  The Brewers jumped out to a 4-2 lead, then saw their bullpen surrender four runs in a 6-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Monday night.

The Brewers were playing their first game since a victory in Pittsburgh last Wednesday.

Brett Anderson got his first start in a Brewers uniform but took a drive off of his left foot from Chicago’s Luis Robert.  Yoan Mancada doubled him to third.  Jose Abreu drove in a run with a ground ball and Yasmani Grandal gave the White Sox a 2-0 lead with a sacrifice fly.

The Brewers cut the lead to 1 in the bottom half of the first when Christian Yelich snapped an 0-for-19 streak with a two-out double.  Avisail Garcia followed with a double of his own to score Yelich.

The Brewers took the lead in the 5th when Garcia drove in two runs with a single to left.  Ben Gamel’s sixth inning single to center scored Justin Smoak to put the Brewers up 4-2. [Read more…]

As the Milwaukee Brewers were in the process of having their series against the St. Louis Cardinals called off, veteran outfielder Lorenzo Cain was busy discussing with his family, a decision to opt out of the remainder of the 2020 season.

Cain became the 17th player to opt out of the 60-game season.  He was not deemed an at-risk player for COVID-19, so his decision was elective which forfeiting the rest of his more than $5.9 million prorated salary.

Brandon Woodruff

Brandon Woodruff and three relievers held the pirates to one hit in a 3-0 Brewers‘ victory in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night.

Woodruff struck out 10, walked one and allowed just an infield single to Phillip Evans in the first inning.  He worked 6 1/3 innings to earn the victory and retired 17 straight hitters during one stretch.

David Phelps, Devin Williams and Josh Hader finished up, giving the Brewers a .500 road trip (3-3) to start the season.

Ben Gamel and Keson Hiura homered for the Brewers, but Christian Yelich’s slump continued.  Yelich went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts.  He’s 1-for-27 for the season, seeing his average slip to .037.

Brewers extend stay hot, pull into wild card tie

September 18, 2019 By Bill Scott

Mike Moustakas

The Milwaukee Brewers managed just four hits against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night, but two of them went for home runs in a 3-1 victory at Miller Park.

Lorenzo Cain and Mike Moustakas both homered, with Moustakas’ blast breaking a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning.  Trent Grisham ended the scoring in the 8th with a sacrifice fly to center field in the eighth, driving in Ben Gamel, who reached on a double.

Brandon Woodruff got the start for the Brewers after being sidelined by an oblique injury since late July.  He pitched two innings, allowing no hits, walking one and striking out four.  He reached 99 on the radar gun and was working his fastball in the upper 90’s throughout his two innings of work.

Gio Gonzalez took over in the third, the first of four relievers to finish off the Padres.  Drew Pomeranz pitched the final two innings, recording six straight outs, four by strikeout.

The Padres only run came when Hunter Renfroe hit a solo home run to left field off of Matt Albers in the top of the seventh.

The win was the 82nd of the season for the Brewers, officially clinching their third straight winning season.

Game three of the four game series is Wednesday night.  Adrian Houser gets the start for the Brewers.

Brewers will have to deal without Yelich the rest of the way

September 11, 2019 By Bill Scott

Christian Yelich File Photo

Milwaukee Brewers standout Christian Yelich will miss the rest of the season after fracturing his right kneecap in Tuesday’s 4-3 win over the Marlins in Miami.

Yelich is scheduled to return to Milwaukee on Wednesday for additional tests.  At this point, it’s not yet known if he’ll need surgery.  Yelich suffered the injury when he fouled a pitch off of his knee in the first inning.

“First and foremost, we feel awful for Christian,” said Brewers general manager David Stearns.  “This is a guy who’s carried us in a number of ways over the last two years.  He could’ve been two and a half weeks away from a repeat Most Valuable Player award.  So that’s where our thoughts are first.

“From a team perspective, we’ve got a lot of guys in that clubhouse who will hurt tonight.  This is a gut punch for a night.  And then we need to recover and play really strong baseball.  We’ve been through this before as an organization.  Two years ago, almost to the day, we lost Jimmy Nelson to a similarly freak injury, and we competed at a very high level for the remainder of the season.  And I expect our team to compete at a similarly high level going forward.” [Read more…]
