Brewers offense goes MIA in loss to Padres

September 19, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers were held to just three hits and fell to the San Diego Padres 2-1 at Miller Park on Wednesday night.

Padres starter Dinelson Lamet struck out 14 Brewers in his six innings of work to earn the win (3-5).  It snapped the Brewers four-game winning streak, as they lost for just the second time in the last 13 games.

The Padres scored first in the third inning.  Greg Garcia led off with a base hit and Seth Mejias-Brean followed with a home run to right-center field on a 0-2 pitch from Brewers starter Adrian Houser.

The Brewers put runners on second third in the bottom half of the inning with one out, but Lamet struck out Yasmani Grandal and Mike Moustakas to end the threat.

Houser (6-7) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits with no walks and five strikeouts in five [Read more…]

Fielder forced into retirement

August 10, 2016 By Bill Scott

baseballFormer Milwaukee Brewers slugger Prince Fielder is being forced to retire after a second serious neck surgery.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports first reported Tuesday that doctors won’t clear Fielder to play after having a second neck surgery on July 29 and it was determined then he wouldn’t be able to play again.

Fielder was a first-round draft pick of the Brewers in 2002 and played for the team from 2005 through 2011.  In 998 games in Milwaukee, Fielder hit .282 with 230 home runs and 656 RBI.

Fielder went on to sign a nine-year, $214 million free agent contract with the Detroit Tigers.  Detroit dealt Fielder to the Texas Rangers just two years later.

Fielder first had surgery in 2014 to fuse two herniated disks in his neck.  He followed that procedure by hitting .305 with 23 home runs and 98 RBI last season, but his neck started to bother him again this season, this time in a different area.

Fielder was hitting .212 with eight homers and 44 RBI in 89 games before being shut down.

Fielder’s contract pays him $24 million a year through 2020.

Brewers open up against the Cardinals today

April 6, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals have become bitter rivals.  Tony LaRussa has a tendency to do that to teams.

Now that LaRussa has retired and Albert Pujols will be doing his damage in the American League, where does that leave the Brewers and Cardinals?

The Brewers open their season against the Cardinals at Miller Park this afternoon (3:10 first pitch).  But just how hated are the Cardinals without the likes of LaRussa hanging around.  The new Cardinals manager is Mike Matheny.  Matheny spent some time in a Brewers uniform as a player. Fielder: Good things come to those who wait

January 24, 2012 By Bill Scott

It took awhile, but former Milwaukee Brewers slugging 1st baseman Prince Fielder has a free agent deal with the Detroit Tigers.

Prince Fielder

Fielder signed a 9-year deal worth $214-million.

It’s the fourth richest contract in Major League Baseball history, behind the previous deals signed by Alex Rodriguez with the Rangers and then the Yankees, as well as the deal Albert Pujols got from the Angels this offseason.

It was thought that the Washington Nationals had the inside track, but Fielder instead is headed for Detroit.

The Brewers will get compensation in the form of a first round draft pick from the Tigers, number 27 in the upcoming draft.  The Brewers own the 28th pick already and they’ll also get a supplemental first rounder.

Fielder’s deal will average $23.8-million, just shy of the $24-million per season that the Angels will pay Pujols.

The Tigers became a player when they lost DH Victor Martinez to a torn ACL.

Brewers set to sign Cubs free agent Ramirez

December 12, 2011 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers are reportedly set to sign Cubs free agent third baseman Aramis Ramirez, pending a physical.  Ramirez is considered the top free agent third baseman on the market.

Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal is reporting Ramirez could get between $34 million and $37 million dollars.

Ramirez hit .306 with 26 homers and 93 rbi’s in 149 games in 2011, his 9th season with the Cubs.

Ramirez has a lifetime .270 average and .503 slugging percentage at Miller Park, hitting 15 homers and 25 doubles there.

The Brewers are looking for some offensive help, expecting to lose Prince Fielder in free agency.  Ramirez would play third base for the Brewers.  Milwaukee third basemen last season combined to his .215 with 11 homers, 30 doubles and 67 rbi’s.

The Brewers are expected to announce the deal once Ramirez passes his physical.
