Aguilar’s bat leads Brewers past Rockies

May 1, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jesus Aguilar homers for the Brewers

After entering the series against Colorado without a home run, first baseman Jesus Aguilar clubbed his third home run in the last two games to power the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-3 win over the Rockies on Tuesday night at Miller Park.

With the Brewers leading 1-0 in the seventh, Aguilar clubbed a three-run shot to put Milwaukee up 4-0.  It turns out the Brewers would need those runs, seeing the Rockies score three times in the 9th and falling a run short.  Josh Hader came on to slam the door and earn his seventh save of the season.

The rest of the game was a pitching duel between Jhoulys Chacin and Rockies right-hander German Marquez.

Marquez didn’t allow a base runner until the sixth inning, when Ben Gamel led off the inning with a double.  Orlando Arcia’s bunt single put runners at first and third and nobody out.  Ryan Braun followed with a double play ground out, but Gamel scored on the play to give the Brewers the first run of the game.

Chacin entered the game with a 2-3 record and a 6.35 ERA, but he had his “A” game on Tuesday night.  He allowed just two hits over six scoreless innings to earn his third win.

Chase Anderson (2-0, 3.20) pitches game three of the four game series for the Brewers.  Antonio Senzatela (2-1, 3.93) goes for the Rockies.

Jhoulys Chacin

Marcell Ozuna hit a three-run homer and Yadier Molina added a solo shot in the St. Louis 4th inning, sending the Cardinals to a 5-2 win and sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers.

It was the fourth straight loss and seventh in the last eight games for the Brewers, dropping them to .500 (13-13).

The Brewers scored their 23rd straight run via the home run when Eric Thames homered in the first inning.  It means of the Brewers’ last 44 runs scored, 39 have come by home run.

The Brewers managed just five hits off of Cardinals pitching for the third straight game.  Adam Wainwright picked up the win (2-2), the 150th of his big league career.

The Brewers loaded the bases in the 9th and scored a run on a bases loaded walk.  But Jordan Hicks came on to strike out pinch hitter Christian Yelich to end it.

Jhoulys Chacin gave up four runs in four innings to take the loss.  After a 15-8 record last season, Chacin is off to a 2-3 start this year with a 6.35 ERA.

The Brewers are done with the Cardinals until August 19th.  Thursday is an off day and then it’s on to New York for the start of a three game series against the Mets on Friday night.  Chase Anderson (2-0, 3.00 ERA) pitches for the Brewers.  Jacob DeGrom (2-2, 3.68) goes for New York.

The Milwaukee Brewers managed to win their series with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but they dropped their series finale 7-1 in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Starter Jhoulys Chacin made it through just 2 1/3 innings, allowing six hits, three walks and six runs, falling to 2-2 on the season.

“My slider wasn’t working today,” Chacin said.  “Not for lefties or for righties. I just couldn’t command it.  Those guys hit a lot of homers but they also take a lot of walks, too.  You have to throw strikes and make good pitches.”

Dodger pitcher Ross Stripling tossed eight innings of one-run ball and didn’t allow a run until Eric Thames’ Sacrifice fly in the eighth.  Stripline allowed just four hits and a while striking out three. [Read more…]

The Milwaukee Brewers kept Mike Trout in check but his teammates picked up the slack as the Los Angeles Angels pulled out a 5-2 win in their series opener at Angels Stadium in Anaheim.

Tommy La Stella, Andrelton Simmons and Justin Bour all belted their first home runs of the season in the Angels victory.

The home runs by Simmons and La Stella came off of Brewers starter Jhoulys Chacin, who allowed only one other hit in 6 1/3 innings of work, but was saddled with his first loss (2-1) of the season.

The game featured some top plays defensively.  Christian Yelich made a lunging catch of a drive by former Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy in right center.  Yelich then fired to second to double off Albert Pujols at second base.

Just one inning later, Mike Trout pulled off an even bigger play, making a leaping catch at the wall in [Read more…]

Christian Yelich clubbed a two-run homer and drove in three as the Brewers doubled up the Chicago Cubs 4-2 in their series finale at Miller Park on Sunday.

Willson Contreras hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning for Chicago, which cut the Brewers lead in half.  But that’s all Chicago would get off of the Brewers, who won their third straight series to start the season and improved to 8-2.

The Brewers jumped out early as Lorenzo Cain singled in the first and scored on Yelich’s two-run home run.  The home run was the 100th of Yelich’s career.  Yelich also drove in the Brewers final run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly.

Zach Davies pitched into the sixth for the win.  Josh Hader, who was celebrating his 25th birthday, came on and got the final eight outs in relief for his fifth save.

Kyle Hendricks dropped to 0-2, allowing four runs as the Cubs fell to 2-7.

The Cubs return home to Wrigley for their home opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates today.

The Brewers open a 3-game road series in Los Angeles against the Angels of Anaheim.  Jhoulys Chacin (2-0, 4.22 ERA) shoots for his third win of the season for the Brewers.  The Angels will counter with Trevor Cahill (0-1, 3.75).

Jhoulys Chacin

The Milwaukee Brewers picked up where they left off last season, pulling out a thrilling 5-4 win over the division rival St. Louis Cardinals in the 2019 season opener at Miller Park.

Jhoulys Chacin made his third opening day start, but his first with the Brewers.  He went 5 1/3 innings and helped is own cause with a pair of hits, including the game winning solo home run in the fifth.  Chacin became the first pitcher in franchise history to homer on opening day.

Josh Hader pitched two innings, striking out four to earn the save.  With two outs in the ninth inning, Cardinals pinch hitter Jose Martinez sent a drive to right center that looked like it might leave the park.  But Lorenzo Cain, who deserved to win a gold glove last season and didn’t, made a leaping catch while crashing into the wall, preserving the victory.

Both teams clubbed three home runs in the contest.  Christian Yelich clubbed a three run shot and Mike Moustakas added a solo home run to help the Brewers.

Kolton Wong homered twice and Harrison Badger added a solo shot for the Cardinals.

The Brewers improved to 11-10-1 on opening day since joining the National League in 1998.

Game two of the series in Friday night.  Freddy Peralta gets the start against the Cardinals Jack Flaherty.

Brewers set pitching rotation to start season (AUDIO)

March 22, 2019 By Bill Scott

Craig Counsell

Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell completed his five-man starting rotation on Thursday.

Following opening day starter Jhoulys Chacin, the Brewers will go with Freddy Peralta, Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff and Zach Davies.  Davies has been slotted into the fifth spot, while the order in which Peralta, Burnes and Woodruff appear is yet to be determined.

Chase Anderson is the odd man out and will start the season in the bullpen.

Burnes pitched out of the bullpen for the Brewers last season, making 30 appearances and finishing with a 7-0 record and 2.61 ERA.

Woodruff bounced back and forth between the Brewers and their Triple A affiliate.  He ended up making four starts and 15 relief appearances, finishing 3-0 with a 3.61 ERA.

Peralta appeared in 16 games with 14 starts, finishing 6-4 with a 4.25 ERA.

Davies won 17 games in 2017, but rotator cuff inflammation last season meant just 13 starts and a 2-7 record with a 4.77 ERA.
