Miley among three Brewers to file for free agency

October 30, 2018 By Bill Scott

Milwaukee Brewers pitchers Wade Miley and Gio Gonzalez, as well as outfielder Curtis Granderson all decided on free agency.

Miley went 5-2 with a 2.57 earned run average in 16 regular-season starts for the Brewers.  He signed a minor league contract  going into spring training but turned out to be one of the teams most consistent pitchers down the stretch and into the playoffs.  In the postseason, Miley had a 1.23 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP in four starts, pitching 14 2/3 innings.

Gonzalez came to the Brewers in a late season trade with the Washington Nationals, going 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA in five September starts.

Granderson hit .220 with two home runs and three RBI in 19 games and .143 with one RBI in the postseason.

Taylor added to 40-man roster

The Brewers added outfielder Tyrone Taylor to the 40-man roster.  The 2012 second-round draft pick hit .278 with 20  home runs and 80 runs batted in over 119 games.

Brewers sign infielder to minor league deal

The Brewers also signed infielder Jake Hager to a minor league contract which includes an invitation to major league camp.

The 26-year-old Hager hit a combined .284 with 11 homers and 51 RBI in 97 games split between Class AA Biloxi and Class AAA Colorado Springs.

Brewers facing elimination after game 5 loss to Dodgers

October 18, 2018 By Bill Scott

Milwaukee Brewers manager went with another bullpen game on Wednesday afternoon, but this time, they ran into a dominating pitching performance as Clayton Kershaw led the Dodgers to a 5-2 win in Los Angeles.

Kershaw held the Brewers to a run and three hits in seven innings as the Dodgers took a 3-2 lead in the NLCS.  It puts the Brewers in a must win scenario in game six on Friday night at Miller Park.

Kershaw’s outing came after he didn’t make it out of the fourth inning in game one of the series at Miller Park.

Wade Miley started for the Brewers but faced just one batter before Craig Counsell went to Brandon Woodruff out of the bullpen.  After Miley walked the first hitter, Woodruff hit Justin Turner but struck out David Freese and got Manny Machado to ground into an inning-ending double play. Brewers fall to Dodgers in 13 innings, series tied 2-2

October 17, 2018 By Bill Scott

Christian Yelich is hitting just .188 in the NLCS.

It took 13-innings before the Los Angeles Dodgers delivered the game winner to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 and even the NLCS at two-games apiece.

Cody Bellinger’s two-out single off Junior Guerra drove in Manny Machado with the game winner.

Guerra was the final of seven pitchers used by the Brewers.  Brewer pitchers allowed eight hits in 13 innings and struck out a postseason franchise-record 17 Dodgers.

Guerra was in his fourth inning of relief and retired the first batter before Manny Machado singled to left.  He moved to second on a wild-pitch and scored in Bellinger’s two-out single to right.

The game took 5 hours and 15 minutes to play, the second-longest NLCS game ever.

The two teams combined to use 16 pitchers and went a combined 2 for 18 with runners in scoring position, stranding a total of 21 base runners.

Bellinger also robbed Lorenzo Cain of an extra base hit in the 10th inning when he made a diving catch in right field.

Cain finished 0 for 6 with three strikeouts.  He’s hitting just .200 in the series.  Christian Yelich went 1 for 5 and is hitting just .188 in the series. [Read more…]

Brewers face Dodgers Monday night with the NLCS tied 1-1

October 13, 2018 By Bill Scott

Corbin Burnes and Jeremy Jeffress combined to give up four runs down the stretch on Saturday, falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 in game two of the NLCS.

The Brewers saw their 12-game winning streak come to an end.

Starter Wade Miley tossed 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball before giving way to the bullpen with a 3-0 lead.  He also added a double and a single to help with the bat.

The Dodgers started their comeback in the seventh when Burns gave up a walk, followed by a Manny Machado single before being pulled.  Jeremy Jeffress came on to allow a run scoring single by Cody Bellinger and another single by Joc Pederson would load the bases. [Read more…]

Gonzalez will start series opener

October 12, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers will send left-hander Gio Gonzalez to the mound in game one of the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Miller Park.

Since being acquired from Washington on August 31, Gonzalez went 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA in five starts for the Brewers.

“We like the matchup against their lineup,” said manager Craig Counsell.  “It’s no secret that we’re going to use our pitching a little differently than the traditionalists would like.  And so far, the first matchup that we liked was Gio on the mound.

Gonzalez didn’t face the Dodgers this season. [Read more…]

Brewers celebrate again after capturing NLDS against the Rockies

October 8, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Brewers celebrate their sweep of the Rockies in the NLDS.

The Milwaukee Brewers ran their win streak to 11 games by knocking off the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on Sunday, sweeping the best-of-five National League Divisional Series.

Wade Miley and five relievers blanked the Rockies while Jesus Aguilar, Orlando Arcia and Keon Broxton all homered to power the Brewers 12-hit attack.

The Brewers advanced to the NLCS for the first time since 2011.  It starts on Friday at Miller Park against the winner of the other NLDS between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves.

Brewer pitchers held the Rockies to just two runs in the three games.

After taking a 2-0 lead early, the Brewers scored twice in the sixth on a balk and a wild pitch to jump out in front 4-0.

Orlando Arcia started the 9th with a home run to left off of Rockies closer Wade Davis.  Keon Broxton followed with a home run to right.

Josh Hader got the final two outs to close it out for the Brewers.

Brewers climb to within one game of Cubs in Central

September 11, 2018 By Bill Scott

Mike Moustakas scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2 in Chicago on Monday night.

Jonathan Schoop and Orlando Arcia also drove in runs for the Brewers, who climbed to within one-game of Chicago for the Central Division lead.

The Brewers have now won four straight games and 10 of their last 12, while the Cubs have dropped three straight.

After a slow start for Cubs starter Jon Lester, he was in control, retiring the first two hitters in the sixth inning.  But that’s when Lester started to suffer lower back stiffness, allowing a single to Moustakas and a double to Erik Kratz.

The Cubs went to Carl Edwards Jr., who uncorked a wild pitch on the very first pitch, allowing Moustakas to score what turned out to be the game winning run.

Josh Hader took over for the Brewers in the seventh inning and struck out all six batters he faced.  Jeremy Jeffress came on to save it for the Brewers in the ninth.

The Brewers and Cubs play game two of their series at Wrigley Field tonight.  Jhoulys Chacin (14-6, 3.59) goes for the Brewers.  Jose Quintana (12-9, 4.14) gets the nod for the Cubs.

Davies solid in his return as the Brewers beat the Cubs

September 4, 2018 By Bill Scott

Zach Davies made his first start in a major league game since May 29 and he held the Chicago Cubs to a run on four hits in five innings.  Davies didn’t factor into the decision, but he helped the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cubs 4-3 in their series opener at Miller Park.

Shoulder and back issues forced Davies to miss 90 games.  When he took the mound on Monday, he did so with a 2-5 record and a 5.23 ERA.

The Brewers fell behind 3-2 in the 8th when Anthony Rizzo clubbed a two-run home run off of lefty Josh Hader.  But the Brewers got one back in the 8th when Mike Moustakas drew a bases loaded walk to tie the score at 3-3.

The Brewers loaded the bases again in the 9th with one out and NL Player of the Week Christian Yelich at the plate.  Yelich slapped a hard ground ball to third.  Khris Bryant fielded it cleanly, but instead of going home for the force out, he went back to step on third for out number two, then fired across the infield to try to double up Yelich to get out of the inning.  But Yelich had something else in mind, legging it out for a fielder’s choice RBI and the Brewers 10th walk-off win of the season.

After struggling in day games earlier this season, Monday’s win was their sixth straight in daylight.  They had dropped nine in-a-row earlier.

The win moved the Brewers to within four games of the division leading Cubs.  The two teams meet again tonight at Miller Park.  Wade Miley (2-2, 2.18) goes for the Brewers.  Mike Montgomery (4-4, 3.82) goes for Chicago.

Miley gives Brewers some relief

August 31, 2018 By Bill Scott

With the Milwaukee Brewers bullpen overworked the previous two days, they needed a solid effort from Wade Miley on Thursday.  Miley allowed just one run on five hits over 7 1/3 innings to help the Brewers to a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in 11 innings at Great American Ballpark.

Miley allowed just one hit in the first five innings, but the Brewers weren’t able to muster much offense.  They finally scored in the top of the fifth when Christian Yelich drew a bases loaded walk to plate the first run of the game.

Miley, who walked one and struck out six, lowered his ERA to 2.18 through 11 starts.

Dan Jennings, Jordan Lyles, Corbin Burnes, Joakim Soria and Josh Hader finished out the 11-inning victory.

The game winner came in the top of the 11th when Lorenzo Cain clubbed a lead-off home run off of Austin Brice.  Brice had just been recalled from AAA Louisville earlier in the day.  It was the 10th homer of the season for Cain.

The Brewers took 2 of 3 in the series, their third straight series victory.

The Brewers are in Washington D.C. to face the Nationals in the first of a three game series on Friday night.

Yelich powers Brewers to win over Reds

August 30, 2018 By Bill Scott

Christian Yelich went 6 for 6 and hit for the cycle to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 13-12, 10-inning win over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark on Wednesday night.

Yelich became the eighth Brewers player to hit for the cycle and the first since George Kottaras on Sept. 3, 2011, in Houston.  He also matched the club record with six of the Brewers 22 hits, including a two-run homer.

The two teams combined for nine home runs and 36 hits in the wild, back and forth battle.

Jesus Aguilar homered in the 10th inning off of Raisel Iglesias for the Brewers fourth home run of the game.  It ended Aguilar’s month-long slide, giving him 30 home runs for the season.

Mike Moustakas and Jonathan Schoop also homered for the Brewers.  Moustakas had four hits.

The Brewers and Reds wrap up their three game series this afternoon.  Wade Miley (2-2, 2.32) pitches for the Brewers.  Cody Reed (0-1, 3.68) gets the nod for the Reds.
