Brewers use long ball to beat Diamondbacks

May 17, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers clubbed four home runs in the first four innings en route to a 8-2 win over the Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Wednesday.

Travis Shaw and Domingo Santana hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning.  Christian Yelich added a two-run shot in the second, and Tyler Saladino hit a solo shot in the fourth.

Brandon Woodruff pitched five innings, allowing only a solo home run to pick up the win, helping the Brewers to a 5-2 record on their 10-game road trip.  That trip will close with three games at Minnesota, starting Friday night.  The Brewers have the day off today.

Vogt sidelined with shoulder injury

March 1, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers have their first injury of the spring.  Catcher Stephen Vogt suffered a right shoulder strain that is expected to keep him out of action for two to three weeks.

Manny Pina will open the season as the Brewers starting catcher.  The backup job was expected to be a battle between Vogt and Jett Bandy, who is out of minor-league options.

An MRI showed some damage in Vogt’s shoulder, but the injury was described as a sprained shoulder.

The 33-year-old Vogt signed a one-year deal worth $3.06 million but the deal is not guaranteed.  He spent the offseason building arm strength and working on throwing mechanics after throwing out just one of 28 (3.6%) would be base stealers for the Brewers last season. [Read more…]

Brewers keep pace in wild card race with win over the Reds

The Milwaukee Brewers jumped out to an early lead, then found themselves hanging on for a tight 7-6 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park on Tuesday night.

The Reds scored four runs in the final innings before Brewers closer Corey Knebel slammed the door in the 9th with his 38th save of the season.

Domingo Santana gave the Brewers the early lead with a three-run home run in the first inning, his 29th of the season.  Stephen Vogt also notched the first of three doubles and scored on a Orlando Arcia single to give the Brewers a quick 4-0 lead.

Cincinnati’s Scott Schebler clubbed a two-run home run in the second to cut the lead to 4-2, but the Reds gave those two runs back in the third when Scooter Gennett’s throwing error scored a pair of runs.  It put the Brewers back up 6-2.

Zach Davies, who wasn’t sharp at all, made it through just four innings.  When the Reds put the first two runners on base in the fifth, manager Craig Counsell went to the bullpen and Davies bid for his 18th win would fall short.

Josh Hader took over and gave up a sacrifice fly which scored a run and made it 6-3.  Hader would go on to strike out six of the next seven he faced before Zach Cozart homered to left center. [Read more…]

Brewers use the long ball to knock off the Marlins (AUDIO)

September 16, 2017 By Bill Scott

Brewers celebrate one of three 8th inning home runs!

The Milwaukee Brewers clubbed four home runs, including three in their eight run 8th inning to knock off the Miami Marlins 10-2 at Miller Park.

The Brewers played the visitors role in their own ball park.  Eric Thames snapped a 2-2 tie in the 8th with a solo home run, his third in three games.  Neil Walker later followed with a grand slam and eventually, Domingo Santana clubbed a three run home run in the big 8th.

Jeremy Jeffress made his first career start for the Brewers and breezed through the first inning.  But he surrendered two runs in the second to tie the game 2-2.  The Brewers had jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Stephen Vogt’s home run in the top of the second.

After Jeffress, Brewers manager Craig Counsell would use seven more pitchers to close out the victory.

The Brewers kept pace with the division leading Chicago Cubs, who knocked off St. Louis 8-2 earlier in the day in Chicago.  The Brewers remain 3 games behind the Cubs.

The Brewers had 19,369 fans show up for what was supposed to be a road game.  Game two of the series is tonight at Miller Park (6:10 p.m.).  Zach Davies (17-8, 3.67) faces Adam Conley (6-7, 5.23) in the pitching matchup.

Offense is quiet in Brewers loss to Giants

August 24, 2017 By Bill Scott

When the Brewers don’t hit home runs, they usually struggle to win.  They finally got their first long ball of the series, a solo shot by Stephen Vogt in the 9th inning, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a 4-2 loss to the Giants in San Francisco.

The Brewers dropped two of three in the series and fell 3 1/2 games behind the division leading Chicago Cubs in the Central.  The Brewers are 3-3 on their nine-game road trip and will open a three game series against the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Friday night.

Travis Shaw drove in the Brewers first run in the first with a double.  But Shaw would later foul a pitch off of his foot in the ninth inning.  Xrays performed after the game were negative and Shaw is listed as day to day.

The Giants snapped a 1-1 tie in the seventh on Jarrett parker’s two-out, check-swing double off of Brewers reliever Jacob Barnes.

Matt Garza allowed a single run in the first inning while pitching out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam.  That is all he would allow in five innings.

The Brewers will send Chase Anderson to the mound against the Dodgers in game one of the series on Friday night.  Anderson is 7-2 with a 2.83 ERA.  The Dodgers will counter with Kenta Maeda (11-5, 3.88).

Vogt to miss at least a month

July 19, 2017 By Bill Scott

With the Milwaukee Brewers battling for the National League Central Division lead, their catching depth took a shot when an MRI showed that Stephen Vogt suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee and will miss at least a month.

The Brewers put Vogt on the 10-day disabled list and recalled Jett Bandy from Class AAA Colorado Springs.  Bandy entered last night’s loss to the Pirates as a late inning pinch hitter and singled on the first pitch he saw.

The Brewers also recalled reliever Michael Blazek from Colorado Springs and reinstated starter Junior Guerra from the disabled list.  They optioned reliever Tyler Webb and infielder Yadiel Rivera to Colorado Springs.

Vogt was injured in a collision at the plate with Pirates pitcher Chad Kuhl in the Brewers’ 4-2 loss on Monday.

Vogt was originally claimed off waivers from the Oakland A’s in late June and was hitting .250 with four home runs and nine RBI.

Brewers drop road opener in Pittsburgh

July 18, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers opened a 10-game road trip with a 4-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.  They lost catcher Stephen Vogt in the process, after Pirates Chad Kuhl ran into him on a play at the plate.  Vogt left with what was described as a neck strain and a strained left knee.  Manager Craig Counsell said afterwards that they would be day-to-day with Vogt.

Travis Shaw continued his solid season with a single, double and two runs scored, but the Brewers dropped their second straight game.  It’s the first time they’ve dropped two straight games since June 27-28.

Orlando Arcia’s single to center scored Shaw for the Brewers first run.  Shaw then beat the throw and tag later on a Stephen Vogt ground ball to first to score the second Brewers run.

Brent Suter pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Pirates took the lead in the sixth when Josh Bell doubled to center off of left handed reliever Josh Hader.  He scored on Gregory Polanco’s double to left.  Pittsburgh added the final run in the 8th on three straight singles against Tyler Webb.

The two teams play game two of the series at PNC Park on Tuesday night.  Junior Guerra (1-3, 4.78) is expected to come off the disabled list to start for the Brewers.  Pittsburgh will counter with Ivan Nova (9-6, 3.21).

The Brewers may also have to call up another catcher if its determined that Vogt will miss too much time.

Brewers hit 50 wins at the all-star break (AUDIO)

The Milwaukee Brewers are quickly becoming one of the top stories in Major League Baseball.  With the rest of the NL Central Division struggling, the rebuilding Brewers enter the all-star break with 50 wins and a 5 1/2 game lead over both the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals.

The Brewers beat the New York Yankees 5-3 on Sunday, their ninth win in the last 11 games.

Travis Shaw went 2-for-4 with a home run and four rbi’s.  Shaw enters the all-star break with a .299 average, 19 home runs and 65 rbi’s.  Stephen Vogt also homered in the win, his fourth of the season.

Jimmy Nelson (8-4) allowed three runs in five innings to earn the victory.  Manager Craig Counsell got four innings from his bullpen, including a four-out save for Corey Knebel (14th), who just a day earlier, had served up a walk-off home run to the Yankees.

Knebel is the only Brewers player selected to take part in Tuesday’s Major League Baseball all-star game.

In their 91 games before the all-star break, the Brewers have scored 81 first inning runs.

The Brewers reached the all-star break in first place for just the fifth time in franchise history.  They held on to make the playoffs in 1982 and 2011.

The Brewers won’t return to action until Friday, when they host the Philadelphia Phillies.
