Brewers make moves, send Arcia to the minors

The Milwaukee Brewers made a series of roster moves today.  The biggest of which came when they sent shortstop Orlando Arcia to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Arcia has been mired in a season-long offensive slump, hitting .194 with two home runs and 13 RBI.  In 139 at bats, Arcia has 34 strikeouts and only seven walks.

The Brewers also sent right-handed pitcher Jorge Lopez to AAA Colorado Springs.  They recalled infielder Eric Sogard from Colorado Springs and right-handed pitcher Adrian Houser from AA Biloxi.

The Brewers also made a trade, acquiring minor league catcher Erik Kratz from the New York Yankees for a player to be named or cash.  Kratz was hitting .269 in 17 games with AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.  He had four home runs and six RBI.

To make room for Kratz, the Brewers designated catcher Jett Bandy for assignment.

The Milwaukee Brewers managed just two hits on Sunday, in a 9-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates at Miller Park.

Pirates pitcher Chad Kuhl continued to dominate the Brewers, allowing just one hit in seven innings and not allowing the crowd of 38,285 to ever get going.  It’s the seventh time this season the Brewers have been shutout, after being blanked just eight times all of last year.

It’s a big number already, for sure,” said manager Craig Counsell.  “The series in Chicago, conditions played a role.  But seven is too many right now.”

Besides the run production itself, the Brewers are 14-1 against Miami, Cincinnati, San Diego and Kansas City.  They are averaging 5.5 runs per game.  In their 20 games against winning teams, Chicago, St. Louis, New York and Pittsburgh, the Brewers are 6-14 and have averaged just 2.5 runs a game. Vogt sidelined with shoulder injury

March 1, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers have their first injury of the spring.  Catcher Stephen Vogt suffered a right shoulder strain that is expected to keep him out of action for two to three weeks.

Manny Pina will open the season as the Brewers starting catcher.  The backup job was expected to be a battle between Vogt and Jett Bandy, who is out of minor-league options.

An MRI showed some damage in Vogt’s shoulder, but the injury was described as a sprained shoulder.

The 33-year-old Vogt signed a one-year deal worth $3.06 million but the deal is not guaranteed.  He spent the offseason building arm strength and working on throwing mechanics after throwing out just one of 28 (3.6%) would be base stealers for the Brewers last season. [Read more…]

Pitching leads Brewers past Cardinals in series finale

The Milwaukee Brewers finally won a series from the St. Louis Cardinals, taking two of three with a 2-1 win at Miller Park on Thursday.  Prior to Thursday, the Cardinals had won 13 straight series at Miller Park dating to July 2012.

Matt Garza, who came off the disabled list after recovering from a lower leg strain, allowed just one run over 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win.  Jacob Barnes, Anthony Swarzak and Corey Knebel, who notched his 20th save, finished up for the Brewers.

Garza allowed Greg Garcia’s RBI single in the fifth inning, one of only four hits he allowed on the day.  That tied the game 1-1, but the Brewers bounced back in the bottom half to retake the lead, collecting three straight two-out singles from Travis Shaw, Hernan Perez and Keon Broxton to put the Brewers on top for good.

Broxton also took away a home run in the second inning from Jose Martinez, leaping high over the wall in right center to snatch a would be  home run. [Read more…]

Brewers miss opportunity, fall to Giants in 10-innings

June 9, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers scored twice in the 9th inning to pull even with San Francisco 5-5, but with a runner at third base and nobody out, they failed to score him.  The result?  The Giants went on to win 9-5 in 10-innings.

Eric Sogard hit a leadoff home run in the ninth to draw the Brewers to within a run at 5-4.  Eric Thames drew a walk, moved to third on a Jesus Aguilar double and scored on a Travis Shaw single to center, tying the game 5-5.

With runners at the corners and nobody out, Domingo Santana struck out, Jett Bandy hit a line drive right at the third baseman, Eduardo Nunez for out number two and pinch-hitter Hernan Perez grounded out to end the threat.

Rookie Paolo Espino made his second start of the season for the Brewers.  He allowed three runs on five hits, including a pair of home runs in four innings of work, but wasn’t involved in the decision. [Read more…]

Brewers battle through tough conditions to beat Cubs (AUDIO)

May 20, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers battled through a long, cold and wet afternoon at Wrigley Field to earn their fourth straight win, 6-3 over the Chicago Cubs.

It was the 10th win in the last 12 games for the Brewers, who moved a season high seven games over .500 (25-18).

The game featured a 1 hour, 59 minute rain delay.

Career minor leaguer Paolo Espino made his major league debut.  He allowed three runs on five hits through four innings, but struck out three Cubs and walked nobody.

Cubs pitchers wish they could lay claim to the no walks.  They issued 10 free passes on the day, starting with Eddie Butler, who needed 40 pitches just to get through the first inning.  He gave up a two run single to Jett Bandy and the Brewers have now outscored their opponents 45-12 in the first inning of games. Brewers perched at the top of NL Central

May 18, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers are supposed to be rebuilding.  Nobody knows how long this recent streak of success will last, but for now, the Brewers are at the top of the National League Central Division, looking down at the other four teams.

Jett Bandy’s ninth-inning RBI single was the highlight of a two-run rally and the Brewers beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 at Petco Park on Wednesday night.

The Brewers won for the eighth time in the last 10 games to climb five games over .500 at 23-18.  It’s the first time they’ve reached that mark since September of 2014.

Travis Shaw returned to the Brewers lineup after missing two games with a finger injury and immediately paid dividends by driving in Eric Sogard with a rbi single to center.  That would be it until the ninth inning for the Brewers offense. [Read more…]

Wily Peralta delivers a pitch in the Brewers 9-4 win over Cincinnati

The Milwaukee Brewers jumped out to an early lead and went on to post a 9-4 win over Cincinnati, sweeping the Reds in their three game series at Miller Park.

The Brewers pounded out 14 hits, including three by catcher Jett Bandy.  Four other Brewers had multiple-hit games.

Cincinnati’s Joey Votto clubbed the first of four solo home runs by the Reds in the first inning, giving them a 1-0 lead.  But the Brewers answered in a big way, scoring five runs on seven hits in the bottom half of the first to take a 5-1 lead.

Orlando Arcia had an RBI double in that first inning.  He would later hit the Brewers only home run of the day.

The Brewers have outscored their opponents 27-8 in the opening inning this season.  They have also led at some point in 21 of its 23 games this season. [Read more…]

Long ball lifts Brewers past Cardinals in series opener

April 21, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers opened a 10-game home stand with a 7-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Miller Park on Thursday night.

Travis Shaw, Eric Thames and Jett Bandy clubbed home runs to push the Brewers league leading total to 32 for the season.  The Brewers have hit at least one home run in 12 straight games.

Zach Davies picked up his first win (1-2) of the season, but he needed the offensive help.  Davies reached 99 pitches after just 5 1/3 innings.  He surrendered three runs in the second on a bases-loaded triple by Kolten Wong and served up Matt Carpenter’s 425-foot homer to right-center in the fifth. Brewers cough up lead, fall to Cubs on walk-off homer

April 20, 2017 By Bill Scott

As it is, the Milwaukee Brewers finished their nine-game road trip with a 6-3 record, but it could have been better.

The Brewers got early home runs from Travis Shaw and Jett Bandy and jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Chicago.  But the Cubs came back to win 7-4.

Carlos Torres, Corey Knebel and Neftali Feliz all issued walks in the final four innings.  Those base runners came around to score.  Addison Russell provided the walk-off, game winning three-run home run off of Feliz to pull out their second straight come from behind win. [Read more…]
