Brewers miss opportunity, fall to Giants in 10-innings

June 9, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers scored twice in the 9th inning to pull even with San Francisco 5-5, but with a runner at third base and nobody out, they failed to score him.  The result?  The Giants went on to win 9-5 in 10-innings.

Eric Sogard hit a leadoff home run in the ninth to draw the Brewers to within a run at 5-4.  Eric Thames drew a walk, moved to third on a Jesus Aguilar double and scored on a Travis Shaw single to center, tying the game 5-5.

With runners at the corners and nobody out, Domingo Santana struck out, Jett Bandy hit a line drive right at the third baseman, Eduardo Nunez for out number two and pinch-hitter Hernan Perez grounded out to end the threat.

Rookie Paolo Espino made his second start of the season for the Brewers.  He allowed three runs on five hits, including a pair of home runs in four innings of work, but wasn’t involved in the decision. [Read more…]

Brewers battle through tough conditions to beat Cubs (AUDIO)

May 20, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers battled through a long, cold and wet afternoon at Wrigley Field to earn their fourth straight win, 6-3 over the Chicago Cubs.

It was the 10th win in the last 12 games for the Brewers, who moved a season high seven games over .500 (25-18).

The game featured a 1 hour, 59 minute rain delay.

Career minor leaguer Paolo Espino made his major league debut.  He allowed three runs on five hits through four innings, but struck out three Cubs and walked nobody.

Cubs pitchers wish they could lay claim to the no walks.  They issued 10 free passes on the day, starting with Eddie Butler, who needed 40 pitches just to get through the first inning.  He gave up a two run single to Jett Bandy and the Brewers have now outscored their opponents 45-12 in the first inning of games. Sogard continues his improbable roll

May 19, 2017 By Bill Scott

Eric Sogard went four for four and reached  base all five times, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-2 win over the San Diego Padres at Petco Park in San Diego on Thursday.

Sogard’s two-run double in the seventh inning was the big blow for the Brewers, who have won nine of their last 11 games.  In the four game series, Sogard went 9 for 15 (.600) with three doubles, a home run, five runs batted in and four runs scored.

The Brewers took three of four from the Padres to improve to 24-18 and remain in first place atop the National League Central.  They Brewers are six games over .500 for the first time since Sept. 17, 2014. [Read more…]

Peralta to the bullpen

May 18, 2017 By Bill Scott

Wily Peralta has been bumped from the starting rotation and will now work out of the Milwaukee Brewers bullpen.  Who takes Peralta’s place in the rotation will be announced sometime today (Thursday).  Peralta was scheduled to pitch the series opener in Chicago against the Cubs on Friday.

In eight starts this season, Peralta had a 4-2 record but his ERA is a hefty 6.08.  He made it through just 4 1/3 innings in each of his last two outings.

Peralta has appeared in 121 major league games with 120 of those coming in a starting role.

Junior Guerra is eventually expected to take the vacant spot in the rotation, but he’s scheduled to make one more start at double-A Biloxi.  So for at least Friday’s game against the Cubs, right-handed minor leaguer Paolo Espino could get the call up.  He was scratched from his scheduled start on Wednesday for Class AAA Colorado Springs.  Espino is 4-0 with a 2.54 ERA.
