Wisconsin football won’t play at Wrigley

July 9, 2020 By Bill Scott

Due to the uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic, the Wisconsin Badger football team will face the Northwestern Wildcats on November 7 at Ryan Field on the Northwestern campus in Evanston, not the originally scheduled location of Wrigley Field.

Northwestern’s vice president of athletics and recreation, Jim Phillips said, “The uncertainty of football and baseball schedules, and the possibility of limited attendance, made this an easy choice to make for our student athletes and fans.”

The University of Wisconsin reported Wednesday that seven athletes have tested positive for COVID-19.

The school originally tested 117 student-athletes with two testing positive.  Roughly a month later, the school conducted 428 tests with seven testing positive.

The University has isolated those who test positive and the athletic department’s infection response team is monitoring their recoveries.

Brewers battle through tough conditions to beat Cubs (AUDIO)

May 20, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers battled through a long, cold and wet afternoon at Wrigley Field to earn their fourth straight win, 6-3 over the Chicago Cubs.

It was the 10th win in the last 12 games for the Brewers, who moved a season high seven games over .500 (25-18).

The game featured a 1 hour, 59 minute rain delay.

Career minor leaguer Paolo Espino made his major league debut.  He allowed three runs on five hits through four innings, but struck out three Cubs and walked nobody.

Cubs pitchers wish they could lay claim to the no walks.  They issued 10 free passes on the day, starting with Eddie Butler, who needed 40 pitches just to get through the first inning.  He gave up a two run single to Jett Bandy and the Brewers have now outscored their opponents 45-12 in the first inning of games. Wrigley Field turns “100” today (Video)

April 23, 2014 By Bill Scott

One Hundred years ago, April 23, 1914, Wrigley Field opened its doors to professional baseball.  At the time, it was known as Weegham Park.

Owner Charles Weeghman purchased the Cubs when the Federal League folded in 1915 and Weeghman Park became Cubs Park in 1919.

Eventually it became Wrigley Field when owner William Wrigley Jr. bought the team in 1926.

The vines were purchased and planted in 1937 by Bill Veeck.  It would be the park known for day baseball, until lights were eventually constructed in 1988.

The team is now owned by the Ricketts family, which purchased the Cubs in 2009 for $845 million.  They’re hoping to start a $500 million renovation at Wrigley Field. [Read more…]
