The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired third baseman Mike Moustakas from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for outfielder Brett Phillips and right-handed pitcher Jorge Lopez.

Moustakas was drafted by Kansas City in 2007 and has appeared in two all-star games.  He’s hitting .249 with the Royals this season, with 20 home runs and 62 RBI in 98 games.  He has produced 20+ home runs for the fourth time.  His 38 home runs last season marked a franchise record.

Moustakas has a career batting average of .251 with 139 HR and 441 RBI in 934 games, all with Kansas City.  After missing most of the 2016 season with right thumb and right leg injuries, Moustakas returned last season to earn American League Comebacker Player of the Year, hitting .272 with 38 home runs and 85 RBI in 248 games.

The 24-year-old Phillips has spent most of this season at Triple-A Colorado Springs (71 games, .240 avg., 6 home runs, 25 rbi and 11 stolen bases.  He has had three stints with the Brewers this season, appearing in 15 games (.182, 0 HR & 4 rbi).

The 25-year-old Lopez also spent most of this season at Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he made 24 relief appearances (3-3, 5.65 ERA, 5 saves).  He also had six stints with Milwaukee this season, appearing in 10 games out of the bullpen (0-1, 2.75 era).

Phillips will report to the Royals as soon as possible, while Lopez will report to Omaha (AAA).

The Milwaukee Brewers made a series of roster moves today.  The biggest of which came when they sent shortstop Orlando Arcia to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Arcia has been mired in a season-long offensive slump, hitting .194 with two home runs and 13 RBI.  In 139 at bats, Arcia has 34 strikeouts and only seven walks.

The Brewers also sent right-handed pitcher Jorge Lopez to AAA Colorado Springs.  They recalled infielder Eric Sogard from Colorado Springs and right-handed pitcher Adrian Houser from AA Biloxi.

The Brewers also made a trade, acquiring minor league catcher Erik Kratz from the New York Yankees for a player to be named or cash.  Kratz was hitting .269 in 17 games with AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.  He had four home runs and six RBI.

To make room for Kratz, the Brewers designated catcher Jett Bandy for assignment.

Reds snap eight game losing streak against Brewers

April 17, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Cincinnati Reds marched into Miller Park on Monday with the worst record in the majors at 2-13, riding a eight-game losing streak.  When the dust settled, the losing skid had come to an end as the Reds banged out 14-hits in a 10-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Reds starting pitcher Luis Castillo had a 7.31 ERA in his first three starts, but he dominated Milwaukee hitters before departing in the seventh.  By that time, the game was out of reach after the Reds put a six-spot on the board in the sixth inning.

The Brewers first runs came in the 7th, from a relief pitcher at that as Jorge Lopez collected his first major league hit, a bases-loaded two run double.

The Brewers (8-9) dropped to 2-6 at home this season and have been outscored 48-20 in those games. [Read more…]

Brewers close worst season since 2004

October 5, 2015 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoThe Milwaukee Brewers have ended their worst season in eleven years, falling to the Chicago Cubs 3-1 at Miller Park on Sunday.

The Cubs scored all three runs in the first inning off of rookie Jorge Lopez.  Lopez hit a batter and walked the next two before giving up an Anthony Rizzo two-run single, giving him 101 R-B-I’s for the season.  Lopez went five innings and fell to 1-1.

Cubs starter Dan Haren gave up three hits and a walk in six innings to finish at 11-and-9.   Travis Wood earned his fourth save.

The Cubs now get ready to face the Pittsburgh Pirates in the National League Wild Card game at P-N-C park on Wednesday night.

The Brewers finished 68-94, which matched  their low mark from 2004.  They finished four games in front of last-place Cincinnati in the National League Central.  But the Brewers lose 14 more games than a year ago, when they led the division for five months before collapsing in September.

The Brewers will now start to rebuild under new general manager David Stearns.
