Vogt to miss at least a month

July 19, 2017 By Bill Scott

With the Milwaukee Brewers battling for the National League Central Division lead, their catching depth took a shot when an MRI showed that Stephen Vogt suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee and will miss at least a month.

The Brewers put Vogt on the 10-day disabled list and recalled Jett Bandy from Class AAA Colorado Springs.  Bandy entered last night’s loss to the Pirates as a late inning pinch hitter and singled on the first pitch he saw.

The Brewers also recalled reliever Michael Blazek from Colorado Springs and reinstated starter Junior Guerra from the disabled list.  They optioned reliever Tyler Webb and infielder Yadiel Rivera to Colorado Springs.

Vogt was injured in a collision at the plate with Pirates pitcher Chad Kuhl in the Brewers’ 4-2 loss on Monday.

Vogt was originally claimed off waivers from the Oakland A’s in late June and was hitting .250 with four home runs and nine RBI.

Key roster moves starting to come for Brewers

March 23, 2017 By Bill Scott

With just 11 days before the regular season opener, the Milwaukee Brewers started trimming their roster.

The Brewers released veteran reliever Joba Chamberlain and sent reliever Michael Blazek to Class AAA Colorado Springs.

Infielder Yadiel Rivera was also sent to Colorado Springs and outfielder Michael Reed, who played at Triple-A last season, was sent all the way back to Class AA Biloxi because the outfield at the Triple-A level is loaded with prospects.

The Brewers also sent relievers David Goforth and Andy Oliver as well as catcher Dustin Houle to minor- [Read more…]

Brewers fall to Royals 6-3 in Cactus League

March 1, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to 1-3 in Cactus League play, falling 6-3 to the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday.  The game’s start was delayed by 22 minutes because of wet grounds.

Brewers starter Zach Davies tossed a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.  The Brewers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first two innings behind Domingo Santana’s RBI single and a long home run to center field off the bat of Yadiel Rivera.

The Royals tied the game in the fourth and went in front for good in the sixth inning.

The Brewers had 10 hits, but Keon Broxton had the only multi-hit game with a single and a triple.  Broxton is off to a .375 start at the plate.

The Brewers return to Cactus League action this afternoon, facing the Cincinnati Reds.  Chase Anderson will get the start for the Brewers.

The Milwaukee Brewers closed out their season opening six-game home stand with a 3-2 win over the Houston Astros at Miller Park on Sunday.

The Brewers captured their first series of the season and earned a 3-3 split of their home stand.  Both the Giants and Astros are expected to contend for the playoffs in their respective divisions while the Brewers are in the early stages of a rebuild.

The Brewers continued to show patience at the plate, drawing 26 walks in the first six games of the season.  They drew six of them off of Houston ace Dallas Kuechel, who is the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner.  Four of the six came in the first inning.

Kuechel was staked to a 1-to-nothing lead after Jose Altuve sent Jimmy Nelson’s first pitch of the game out of the park for a home run.  But the Brewers bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the first and never trailed again. [Read more…]

The Milwaukee Brewers split a pair of exhibition games on Monday, beating the Angels of Anaheim 4-3 and falling 3-2 to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Brewers beat the Angels in walk-off fashion as Yadiel Rivera and Jacob Nottingham hit back-to-back homers off Angels’ reliever Deolis Guerra in the ninth inning.

In the Brewers loss to the Diamondbacks, prospect Josh Hader had a solid start for Milwaukee, as he gave up one hit in three shut-out innings.

Earlier in the day, right-hander Wily Peralta was named the Brewers’ Opening Day starter against San Francisco on April 4th, something Peralta called a “dream come true”.
