With opening day in sight, the Milwaukee Brewers trimmed their roster to 27 players, with two more moves necessary to get to the opening day 25-man squad.

Headlining the moves yesterday were infielders Matt Clark and Jason Rodgers being sent to Class AAA Colorado Springs.  Both had good springs and were being considered for the opening day roster.

The Brewers also sent right-handed reliever Rob Wooten to Colorado Springs, leaving the Brewers with 13 pitchers in camp.  Among the 13 is Jim Henderson, who is expected to start the season either on the [Read more…]

Brewers shaping their final roster

March 30, 2015 By Bill Scott

Brewers spring homeThe Milwaukee Brewers optioned pitcher Brandon Kintzler to Class AAA Colorado Springs and released Chris Perez outright.

The moves leave the Brewers with Tyler Thornburg, Michael Blazek and Rob Wooten still battling for a couple of spots in the Brewers bullpen with just a week before the regular season opener against the Colorado Rockies (Aug. 6).

In eight spring appearances, Kintzler posted a 6.48 ERA over 8 1/3 innings.  Opposing hitters were batting .325 with 13 hits.

The Brewers would like Kintzler to return to form, but it’ll have to come in the minors.  His best season was in 2013 when Kintzler posted a 2.69 ERA in 71 appearances.  He struggled last season while pitching with a sore knee that eventually required surgery.

On the field, the Brewers were blanked by the Oakland A’s 7-0 yesterday.  They’ll take the day off today.

Jeffress has peaked the Brewers curiosity (AUDIO)

July 24, 2014 By Bill Scott

Jeremy Jeffress

The Milwaukee Brewers relief corp has been solid from the left side with Will Smith, Zach Duke and now Tom Gorzelanny.  From the right side,

closer Francisco Rodriguez has been rock solid, but injuries to Jim Henderson and Tyler Thornburg and inconsistency from Brandon Kintzler and Rob Wooten has left a once rock solid bullpen a bit short.

Enter newly recalled Jeremy Jeffress who made Brewers 2014 debut on Wednesday.  He pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the Cincinnati Reds
5-1 at Miller Park.  Jeffress opened some eyes with fast balls clocked at 97, 98, 99 and eventually 100 miles per hour.

It’s the second tour with the Brewers for Jeffress, who was the teams first-round draft pick in 2006.  He’s been held back by control issues on the mound and drug-related suspensions.  He pitched in 10 games for the Brewers in 2010, but was traded to Kansas City in the Zach Greinke deal.  [Read more…]

Brewers option Wooten to minors, call up Jeffress

July 21, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers called up right-handed relief pitcher Jeremy Jeffress from Class AAA Nashville and optioned reliever Rob Wooten to Nashville.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Jeffress, the Brewers moved injured pitcher Jim Henderson from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL.

Jeffress was originally a first-round draft pick by the Brewers back in 2006.  They then dealt him to Kansas City in 2011 in the Zach Greinke deal.  He eventually ended up in Toronto.

Jeffress was outrighted by Toronto in early April and decided to become a free agent.  The Brewers signed him to a minor-league deal.  In 30 appearances in Nashville, Jeffress went 4-1 with a 1.51 ERA and five saves.

Jeffress hasn’t allowed a run in nine straight games, working 10 2/3 innings during that span.

Wooten was 1-4 with a 4.36 ERA in 37 appearances with the Brewers.  He started out strong, posting a 0.71 ERA in 13 outings in June, but went south from that point forward.

Late inning miscues cost the Brewers

July 21, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers got sloppy late in the game yesterday and fell to the Washington Nationals 5-4.

Manager Ron Roenicke was upset after the game after Rickie Weeks, whose run-scoring single off of Nationals closer Rafael Soriano tied the game, was thrown out on the back-end of a double-steal attempt with Carlos Gomez.  Roenicke said the trail runner must be sure he can steal the base in that situation.  If they don’t get a good jump, then that trail runner should stay put at first base.  If Weeks would have stayed at first, Ryan Braun’s subsequent deep fly ball would have been a go-ahead sacrifice fly. Arcia leads Twins past Brewers

June 5, 2014 By Bill Scott

Oswaldo Arcia drove in four runs, including the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, leading the Minnesota Twins to a 6-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Target Field on Wednesday night.

Arcia clubbed a three-run home run in the fourth inning and singled in the game winner in the 7th.

The Brewers had fallen behind 4-1 until Aramis Ramirez, who returned from the disabled list, clubbed a three run home run in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game.

Ricky Nolasco (4-5) allowed six hits and struck out seven without a walk to get the win.  The loss goes to Rob Wooten (1-3).  Will Smith gave up Arcia’s run scoring single, just the second time this season that he’s allowed an earned run.

Wily Peralta pitches the final game of the series for the Brewers tonight.

Brewers suffer first road loss

April 18, 2014 By Bill Scott

After a 6-0 start away from Miller Park, the Milwaukee Brewers suffered their first road loss of the season.  The Pittsburgh Pirates scored 9 runs in the 7th and 8th innings to break a 2-2 tie and post a 11-2 win over the Brewers.

The Pirates clubbed four home runs in the victory, three of the four coming with men on base.  Pittsburgh has 23 home runs on the season, which is tops in the Major Leagues.

Josh Harrison’s two-run homer to left off of Rob Wooten (0-1) broke a 2-2 tie and started the Pirates 9-run outburst.

The Pirates finished with 12-hits in the game.

Edinson Volquez (1-0) gave up two runs in seven innings for his first win with the Pirates.  He scattered eight hits.

Aramis Ramirez and Jonathan Lucroy had run scoring hits for the Brewers on the loss.

Kyle Lohse (2-1, 3.05) is scheduled to pitch game two of the series tonight against Pittsburgh.

August 24, 2013 By Bill Scott

Khris Davis clubbed a pair of two-run homers in consecutive at-bats for the first multi-homer game of his career, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds in the series opener on Friday night.

Davis has 8 home runs this season with all 8 coming in the 23 games since he returned to Milwaukee from the minors, his third stint with the team.

Scooter Gennett also homered for the Brewers, who won at Great American Ballpark for just the second time in seven games this season.

Rob Wooten earned the win in relief and Jim Henderson notched his 23rd save.

Wily Peralta pitches game 2 of the series for the Brewers tonight.
