Brewers drop further behind the division leading Cubs

July 31, 2017 By Bill Scott

A pair of late inning home runs led the Chicago Cubs to a 4-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in the series finale at Miller Park on Sunday.

Rookie Victor Caratini clubbed his first big league home run in the 7th to break a 2-2 tie and Kris Bryant added a solo shot in the eighth for the Cubs.

Domingo Santana clubbed a two-run homer in the sixth to tie the game 2-2 for the Brewers, his 18th of the season.

Zach Davies (12-5) took the loss, serving up the home run to Caratini.  He allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out six.

The Brewers dropped two of three after scoring just five runs in three games.  They entered the finale stranding 23 runners and were 0 for 16 with runners in scoring position.  The teams last hit with runners in scoring position came five days earlier, in Washington as Santana clubbed a RBI single.

The Brewers have Monday off and will open a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night at Miller Park.

Brewers send Guerro to the minors

The Brewers sent starting pitcher Junior Guerra to Class AAA Colorado Springs and selected the contract of reliever Wei-Chung Wang.  Guerra lasted just three innings in Saturday’s 2-1 loss to the Cubs.  He lost command and walked four hitters.

The Brewers ended up using six relievers in that game as Guerra fell to 1-4 with a 4.96 ERA.

Sending out Guerra and with Matt Garza on the disabled list, the Brewers have only three starters on their 25-man roster.

Brewers claim a third baseman

June 17, 2015 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers claimed third baseman Matt Dominguez off of waivers from the Houston Astros on Tuesday.  They assigned him to Class AAA Colorado Springs.

The 24-year-old Dominguez, was the 12th overall pick in the 2007 draft by the Florida Marlins.

Dominguez was playing at Class AAA Fresno and hitting .251 with four homers and 26 RBI.  In the majors, Dominguez is a career .233 hitter with 42 home runs and 152 runs batted in.

Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez name has come up in trade discussions.  Dominquez would appear to be insurance if the Brewers do move forward with a future deal involving Ramirez.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Dominguez, the Brewers designated left-hander Wei-Chung Wang for assignment.  Wang has been pitching at Class A Brevard County.

May 20, 2014 By Bill Scott

Freddie Freeman, Justin Upton and pinch-hitter RyanDoumit clubbed home runs to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 9-3 win over Milwaukee,

extending the Brewers losing streak to three games.

Atlanta started the night with the fewest runs scored in the majors this season.  But they banged out 15 hits against the Brewers, making a winner out of Mike Minor (2-2).  Minor gave up two runs and five hits while striking out five in 6 2/3 innings.

Wily Peralta (4-3) took the loss, allowing three runs and nine hits along with a season high four walks.  He struck out five in five innings of work.

The Braves, leading 4-3 in the 8th-inning, broke the game open by scoring five runs off of 22-year-old reliever Wei-Chung Wang.  Wang allowed Doumit’s solo homer, Upton’s two-run blast and run scoring singles from Andrelton Simmons and Ramiro Pena.

Wang managed to get just two outs before Brewers skipper Ron Roenicke decided to ask a position player to pitch for the second time this season.  First baseman Lyle Overbay came on to record the final out in the eighth inning.

Khris Davis and Ryan Braun both homered in the loss for the Brewers.  Braun became the fifth player in Brewers history to reach 700 career rbis.  He needs 4 rbis to tie Geoff Jenkins for 4th place.

Yovani Gallardo (2-2, 3.07) pitches game two of the series for the Brewers tonight.  Julio Teheran (2-3, 2.20) goes for the Braves.

Brewers recall Wooten, option Herrerra to Nashville

May 1, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers aren’t ready to give up on Rule 5 pick Wei-Chung Wang.  Instead, the Brewers sent utility player Elian Herrera to Triple A Nashville and called up reliever Rob Wooten.

Wang struggled again in yesterday’s 9-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals and carries a 15.00 ERA in just four appearances for the Brewers this season.  But at this point, the Brewers believe he has a future in the majors and weren’t willing to offer him back to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Sending Herrera to the minors means the Brewers have only two healthy outfielders left, Khris Davis and Carlos Gomez.  If Ryan Braun isn’t ready to play tonight, then the Brewers will likely place Mark Reynolds in right field.

Logan Schafer is eligible to come off of the disabled list on Saturday.

Garza struggles as Brewers drop series finale to Cardinals

May 1, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers finished the month of April with a 20-8 record, but they did so with a 9-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Brewers needed starter Matt Garza to get them deep into the game to take some pressure off of the bullpen, but that didn’t happen.  Garza suffered a right thumb contusion while hitting and worked three innings before being removed.  That meant trouble for a heavily taxed bullpen.

Ron Roenicke went with little used Rule 5 draft pick Wei-Chung Wang who was overmatched by the Cardinals.  Wang wound up allowing four runs on six hits in three innings.  It brings his total to 13 hits and 10 runs allowed in just six innings this season.

Zach Duke followed for an inning and the Brewers called on catcher Martin Maldonaldo to finish up, working a scoreless 8th inning.  Maldonado became the first position player to pitch for the Brewers since infielder Joe Inglett in July 2010.

The Brewers got off to a good start.  Home runs by Mark Reynolds and Carlos Gomez homered to give the Brewers a 3-1 lead.  But St. Louis slugger Matt Adams clubbed a long three-run homer to right to put the Cardinals up for good at 4-3.  Allen Craig also homered for the Cardinals, who salvaged the final game in the series.

The Brewers open a four-game series in Cincinnati against the Reds tonight.  Manager Ron Roenicke says there’ll likely be a roster move announced before the game.  The Brewers need more bullpen help and it could come at the expense of the rookie Wei-Chung Wang.  Because he was acquired from the Pirates in the Rule 5 Draft, if the Brewers would have to offer him back to the Pirates.

Marco Estrada (2-1, 2.87) pitches for the Brewers in the series opener at Cincinnati.  The Reds will counter with Homer Bailey (1-2, 6.15).

Wang finally gets his chance with the Brewers

April 15, 2014 By Bill Scott

21-year-old rookie reliever Wei-Chung Wang finally made his big-league debut with the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night.

The native of Taiwan pitched a scoreless ninth inning against the Cardinals in the Brewers 4-0 loss.  Wang surrendered a single to Pete Kozma, but that was it.

While he had been throwing bullpen sessions to try to stay sharp, he hadn’t pitched in a real Major League game since March 28th when he worked two scoreless innings against Kansas City in an exhibition at Miller Park.

loss to the Cincinnati Reds.

Kyle Lohse allowed five hits and two runs while striking out four.

Lohse left trailing 2-1.  The Reds broke the game open late against some of the Brewers minor league pitching.

The Brewers are back in Milwaukee and will play exhibitions against the Kansas City Royals tonight (7:10pm) and again tomorrow.  They’ll open the regular season on Monday against the Atlanta Braves at Miller Park.

March 26, 2014 By Bill Scott

Barring any late changes, it would appear the Milwaukee Brewers 25-man

Ron Roenicke

roster is set with opening day next Monday drawing closer.

The Brewers optioned reliever Rob Wooten and utility player Elian Herrera to Class AAA Nashville, and left-hander Tom Gorzelanny will open the season on the disabled list.

Among the players that made the 25-man roster is Rule 5 draft pick Wei-Chung Wang.  Wang made the jump from rookie ball and will be used by the Brewers in long relief. [Read more…]
