Yelich voted to start 2019 MLB All-Star Game

June 28, 2019 By Bill Scott

Baseball fans around the country, including those in Wisconsin, have voted Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich into the starting lineup for the 2019 MLB All-Star Game, which will take place on Tuesday, July 9 at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio.

It’s the second career All-Star nod and the first All-Star Game start for Yelich, who finished as the top vote-getter in the National League.

Yelich becomes the first member of the Brewers to start in the Midsummer Classic since 2014, when Carlos Gomez (left field), Jonathan Lucroy (catcher) and Aramis Ramirez (third base) earned starting spots.  Yelich is also the sixth outfielder in franchise history to start in the All-Star Game, joining Ben Oglivie (1980), Jeromy Burnitz (1999), Ryan Braun (2008-10, 2012), Corey Hart (2010) and Gomez (2014).

Second baseman Mike Moustakas and catcher Yasmani Grandal also represented the Brewers on the MLB All-Star Starters Election ballot, with both finishing third at their respective positions.

The rest of the All-Star rosters for both squads, totaling 24 for the NL and 23 for the AL, will be determined through a combination of “Player Ballot” choices and selections made by the Commissioner’s Office.  The balance of the rosters will be announced on ESPN at 4:30 p.m. CT this Sunday, June 30.

Gomez leads Rangers to win over Brewers

September 29, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoFormer Milwaukee Brewer slugger Carlos Gomez clubbed a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning off of Brewers closer Tyler Thornburg to help the Texas Rangers pull out a 8-5 win in the series finale at Globe Life Park.

Gomez had three hits and reached base four times against his former club.  In the series, he finished seven for 12 with two doubles, two home runs and eight runs batted in.

The Brewers got to Rangers starter Cole Hamels early, scoring all five of their runs off of the Texas ace in the first three innings.

Jonathan Villar hit the games first pitch for a home run, his 19th of the season.  Villar needs one home run in the final three games to reach 20 home runs and 60 stolen bases for the season.  The last player to achieve that plateau was Ricky Henderson in 1990.

Chase Anderson worked five innings and wasn’t involved in the decision.  He went 5-1 with a 2.56 ERA over his final 12 starts.

For the season, Anderson finished 9-11 with a 4.39 ERA.

The Brewers get the day off today.  They’ll close the season with a three-game weekend series in Denver against the Colorado Rockies starting Friday night.

Former players do in Brewers

September 28, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoCarlos Gomez clubbed a three-run home run and Jonathan Lucroy’s two-run double put Texas ahead, leading the Rangers to a 6-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas.

Chris Carter gave the Brewers an early lead, slugging a two-run homer, his 39th of the season.  It ties Carter with Kris Bryant of the Chicago Cubs for second place in the National League home run race.  If Carter can hit one more home run in the last four games, he would become just the sixth player in Brewers history to hit 40 home runs in a season.

Manny Pina also homered for the Brewers, which extended their lead to 3-0. [Read more…]

The Houston Astros announced Wednesday that outfielder Carlos Gomez has been designated for assignment.

The former Brewers center fielder is hitting .210 in 85 games with the Astros this season.  He has just five home runs and 29 RBIs.

The 30-year-old Gomez was dealt by the Brewers to the Astros in a trade deadline deal in July of 2015.  After the  trade, Gomez hit .242 with four home runs and 13 RBIs.

Gomez was an All-Star with the Brewers in both 2013 and 2014.  He is in the final season of a three-year, $24 million contract that is paying him $9 million this season.

The Astros have 10 days to either trade Gomez, assign him to the minor leagues or release him.  Gomez could also be claimed by another team off irrevocable outright waivers.

The Milwaukee Brewers ended a 2-game scoreless streak, but fell short against the San Francisco Giants 4-2 at AT&T Park on Monday night.

Rookie right-hander Chris Heston pitched seven strong innings and Brandon Crawford clubbed a two-run home run in the fourth off of Kyle Lohse to lead the Giants.

Milwaukee fell to 1-4 on their current 7-game west coast road trip, while the Giants have won 12 of their last 13 games to move within a half game of the Dodgers for first place atop the National League West.

Heston is 4-0 with a 2.03 ERA in his previous six starts.  He threw the first of three no-hitters in the major leagues this season, back on June 9 against the New York Mets. [Read more…]

The Milwaukee Brewers extended their season best win streak to six games, rolling to a 12-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night at Great American Ballpark.

Five of the six wins have come on the road where the Brewers are hitting .371 with 40 runs scored.  Carlos Gomez had three hits, including a grand slam that broke the game open.

On the mound, Mike Fiers continued his strong pitching of late, holding the Reds to three hits over seven scoreless innings.  The Reds didn’t get a runner past first base on Fiers until the 7th inning.  Fiers improved to 4-7 and lowered his ERA to 3.83.  He walked two and struckout two in the win.

Fiers performance couldn’t have come at a better time.  The Brewers bullpen was out of gas.  Before the game, the Brewers summoned right handed pitchers David Goforth and Tyler Cravy from the minors for help.

To make room on the roster, the Brewers sent pitcher Corey Knebel and infielder Jason Rodgers to Colorado Springs.  The Brewers now have 13 pitchers on their 25-man roster.

Game 2 of the series is in Cincinnati today.

Brewers win series opener

June 24, 2015 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoThe Milwaukee Brewers opened up their six-game homestand by beating the New York Mets on Monday night at Miller Park, 3-2.

Adam Lind had two hits and an RBI, centerfielder Carlos Gomez went 1-2 in his return from a nagging hip injury, and Mike Fiers surrendered two earned runs and four hits over six innings for Milwaukee (26-46), who sent New York (36-36) down to their sixth straight defeat.

Mets leftfielder Michael Cuddyer’s error on Lind’s seventh inning double, allowing Gomez to score opened the door for the Brewers, who had lost eight of their last nine games coming into Monday’s contest.

While Fiers did not factor into the decision, he notch a quality start. Francisco Rodriguez came on in the ninth inning and recorded his 14th save.

Game two of the series is Tuesday night. Jimmy Nelson (3-8, 4.64 ERA) pitches for Milwaukee against New York’s Bartolo Colon (9-5, 4.81 ERA).

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.

Max Scherzer set a Washington Nationals record with 16 strikeouts, tossing a complete-game 4-0 shutout of the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park on Sunday.

Scherzer took a perfect game into the seventh inning before Carlos Gomez broke it up with a broken bat looping single to right.

Scooter Gennett was the only other Brewers’ base runner, coaxing a walk from Scherzer in the 8th inning.

The Brewers were shutout for the 8th time this season.  Only the San Diego Padres have been shutout more times (10) this season.

Taylor Jungmann took the loss, scattering seven hits and allowing two earned runs in five innings.  He walked two and struck out five.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Jungmann will get another start moving forward.

The Brewers open a 2-game home series against the Kansas City Royals tonight at Miller Park.

Mike Fiers gave Brewers manager Craig Counsell just what they needed Monday night.  After beating Arizona in 17-innings on Sunday, Fiers not only gave the Brewers a quality start, he held them without a run in six shutout innings.  The Brewers went on to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 1-0 in their series opener at Busch Stadium.

After Fiers, Jonathan Broxton, Neal Cotts, Jeremy Jeffress and Francisco Rodriguez finished up, giving the Brewers pitching staff 18-straight scoreless innings.

The Brewers only run came in the first inning when Jean Segura led off with a single, moved to second on a fielder’s choice from Ryan Braun and scored on a two-out single by Carlos Gomez. [Read more…]
