Carter agrees to one-year deal with the Yankees

February 8, 2017 By Bill Scott

Chris Carter

Free agent first baseman Chris Carter, who tied for the National League home run lead last season with the Milwaukee Brewers, has agreed to a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the New York Yankees on Tuesday.

The new deal is subject to Carter passing a physical and includes a $500,000 signing bonus, a $3 million salary and $500,000 in performance incentives.

Carter clubbed 41 home runs last season, matching Colorado’s Nolan Arenado for the National League lead.  The Brewers decided not to offer Carter a contract after last season.

Brewers sign first baseman, designate Carter for assignment

November 29, 2016 By Bill Scott

brewers-logoThe Milwaukee Brewers have signed free agent first baseman/outfielder Eric Thames to a three-year contract with a club option for 2020.

“Eric brings to the organization a left-handed power bat that is a good fit for our lineup,” said General Manager David Stearns. “His ability to play first base along with both corner outfield positions adds versatility to the roster. Eric has been extremely impressive over his last three seasons in Korea, and we look forward to his return to the Major Leagues in 2017.”

Thames just turned 30-years-old (Nov. 10), spent the last three seasons playing for the NC Dinos of the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO), where he hit .348 with 124 HR, 379 RBI and 64 stolen bases in 388 games.  He hit .317 with 40 HR, 118 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 121 games this season. Carter clubs 40th home run in Brewers loss

October 1, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoChris Carter clubbed his 40th home run of the season, but that’s all the offense the Milwaukee Brewers could muster, falling to the Colorado Rockies 4-1 at Coors Field in Denver on Friday night.

Carter’s blast kept him within one of Colorado’s Nolan Arenado for the league lead with two games left to play.  Arenado clubbed his 41st in last nights Rockies victory.

Carter becomes just the sixth Brewer in team history to reach the 40 home run milestone.

The Brewers finished the game 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position.  Their only hit came in the six from Hernan Perez, but Carter was cut down at the plate, trying to score from second base.

The loss went to Brewers rookie starter Brent Suter.  He allowed all four runs on 10 hits in five innings of work.

Wily Peralta pitches game two of the series for the Brewers today.

Former players do in Brewers

September 28, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoCarlos Gomez clubbed a three-run home run and Jonathan Lucroy’s two-run double put Texas ahead, leading the Rangers to a 6-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas.

Chris Carter gave the Brewers an early lead, slugging a two-run homer, his 39th of the season.  It ties Carter with Kris Bryant of the Chicago Cubs for second place in the National League home run race.  If Carter can hit one more home run in the last four games, he would become just the sixth player in Brewers history to hit 40 home runs in a season.

Manny Pina also homered for the Brewers, which extended their lead to 3-0. [Read more…]

In year number-one of a rebuilding plan, the Milwaukee Brewers surpassed the victory total from last season, knocking off the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1 in the series finale at Miller Park.

Scooter Gennett and Chris Carter homered, backing another solid outing by starter Chase Anderson.  It is the 69th win of the season, guaranteeing a better finish then the 68-94 mark of a year ago.

The Brewers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Jonathan Villar drew a leadoff walk and Scooter Gennett followed with a home run.

Gennett ran his hitting streak to 14-games and his 128 hits on the season is a new career high.

Carter clubbed his home run in the bottom of the 7th, his 37th of the season.  He also has 88 runs batted in.

Carlos Torres, Corey Knebel and Tyler Thornburg combined for 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief with Thornburg nailing down his 12th save.

Zach Davies (11-7) takes to the mound tonight as the Brewers open their final home series of the season against the Cincinnati Reds.

Pirates grab series opener in Milwaukee

September 21, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoThe Pittsburgh Pirates kept their slight NL Wildcard Playoff hopes alive, marching into Milwaukee and knocking off the Brewers 6-3 in their series opener at Miller Park.  It’s the fifth straight win for the Pirates at Miller Park.

The Pirates got to Brewers starter Matt Garza for five runs on eight hits in just four innings.

The Brewers had some chances to get back in the game, but fell short.  Brewers first baseman Chris Carter hit a hard ground ball to Pirate third baseman Jung Ho Kang in the fifth that knocked him backwards.  As he was falling down, Kang managed to get a throw off to second which turned into a double play.  The Brewers managed to score a run on the play, trailing 5-3 but the Pirates bullpen did the job the rest of the way.

Garza had been pitching better of late, but didn’t have his good stuff last night.

The victory moved the Pirates back to .500 (75-75).

The Brewers meanwhile still need one victory away from surpassing last year’s total.  They need to win twice in the last five home games to produce a winning record at home.

Jimmy Nelson (8-14) pitches game two of the series tonight.

Ryan Braun clubbed two of the Milwaukee Brewers four home runs on Saturday afternoon, powering past Jake Arrieta and the Chicago Cubs 11-3.

On a day when the wind was blowing out, Domingo Santana and Chris Carter also slugged home runs.  Carter’s shot was a monumental blast that bounced off the new scoreboard in left field for a grand slam.  It was his 35th home run of the season.

Braun drove in five runs in all, helping the Brewers erase a 3-0 deficit to score 11-straight runs and win.  It was his sixth multi-homer game of the season, giving him 30 home runs on the year.

It was the fourth victory in the last five meetings for the Brewers over the Cubs, who played without starters Anthony Rizzo, Ben Zobrist, Dexter bowler and Jason Heyward.

Zach Davies (11-7) earned the win, pitching out of a number of jams.  The Cubs scored their only runs in the first inning.  Kris Bryant tripled in the first run, then scored on Chris Coghlan’s home run to right.

Davies allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings with a walk and five strikeouts.

Sloppy defense leads to Brewers defeat

September 14, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoA pair of costly errors allowed the Cincinnati Reds to score four runs in the third inning and go on to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-4 at Great American Ball Park on Tuesday night.

The Brewers have now lost the first two games in the series and added to their major league leading total of errors, which  now totals 122.

Matt Garza (5-7) was the victim of the poor defensive outing, working a solid five innings but taking the loss.  Four of the five runs that Garza allowed were unearned, which means his ERA for the season fell to 4.22.

Offensively, Keon Broxton and Jonathan Villar clubbed solo homers early on.  Chris Carter clubbed his 34th of the season, a two run shot in the ninth to draw the Brewers to within two runs.  But Broxton and Orlando Arcia were retired to end the game.

Junior Guerra pitches the series finale as the Brewers try to avoid a sweep tonight.

Ryan Braun clubbed his 27th home run of the season, a solo shot in the ninth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers held on to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1, earning a split in their four-game series at Busch Stadium.

The Brewers had coughed up a 1-0 lead in the eighth inning on Saturday night and lost 5-1.  They led a 1-0 lead get away in the eighth yesterday, but this time Braun came to the rescue.

Brewers starter Zach Davies allowed a run on five hits in 7 1/3 innings but wasn’t involved in the decision.  Tyler Thornburg came on to record the final five outs to pick up the win.

The Brewers scored their first run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Chris Carter.  That was the only run that Cardinals starter Luke Weaver would allow in six innings.

The Brewers have won eight of their last 11 games.  They’ll open a three-game series in Cincinnati against the Reds tonight.  Wily Peralta (6-9) gets the start for the Brewers.
