Cubs score late and pull away to beat the Brewers

September 6, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoZach Davies and Kyle Hendricks were locked into a pitching duel for six innings.  Each pitcher a mirror image of one another, getting outs with pin point accuracy and a mix of off speed stuff.

But the Cubs would eventually pull away, using  a few soft hits and defensive miscues by the Brewers to pull out a 7-2 victory in their series opener at Miller Park.

Hendricks picked up his 14th win of the season and extending his string to 18 starts without allowing more than three earned runs.

Zach Davies deserved much better, but settled for allowing three runs (2 earned) and seeing his record fall to 10-7. [Read more…]

August 26, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoAndrew McCutchen entered last night’s series opener at Miller Park with a .246 batting average, 17 home runs and 52 runs batted in.

Despite his struggles this season, McCutchen single handedly helped his team end a 9-game losing streak at Miller Park, as the Pittsburgh Pirates pulled out a 3-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in 10-innings.

McCutchen drove in all three runs for the Pirates, driving in the game winner with a single to right in the 10th.  He also singled home a run in the third and clubbed his 18th home run of the season in the first inning. [Read more…]

Brewers offense awakens in win over Braves (AUDIO)

August 12, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoThe Milwaukee Brewers have struggled to score runs over the last few games.  They took out their frustrations on Thursday and put a  thumping on the Atlanta Braves 11-3 at Miller Park.

Chris Carter, Hernan Perez and Scooter Gennett all homered for the Brewers as they scored at least one run in every inning.  It’s the first time in the Brewers 47-year franchise history that they have scored in every inning in which they  batted in a nine-inning game.  The Brewers are only the eighth major-league team in the expansion era (since 1961) to accomplish the feat.

Veteran pitcher Matt Garza benefited from the Brewers offense, who pitched six innings and improved to 4-4.  The Brewers have scored 26 runs in Garza’s last two outings, 22 of which when he was still in the game.

The Brewers will send Jimmy Nelson to the mound tonight when they open a 3-game series against the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park.  Nelson has allowed 25 runs (16 earned) over his last four outings.  He brings a 6-11 record and a 4.02 ERA into tonight’s game.

Homer Bailey pitches for Cincinnati, just his third start since returning from Tommy John surgery.

The Milwaukee Brewers offense has struggled to score runs of late, but Chris Carter’s three-run home run in the third inning helped knock off the Atlanta Braves 4-3 at Miller Park.

The win ended a three-game slide, a stretch where the Brewers managed to score just seven runs.

Carter’s home run is his 26th of the season and the 19th at Miller Park.  The Brewers have now homered in a season-high 13 consecutive games.

Chase Anderson won for the third time in his last four outings, improving to 7-10 on the season.  He worked 5 1/3 innings before giving way to the bullpen. [Read more…]

Nelson struggles as Brewers fall to Padres

August 2, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers 2016 alternate capAfter a busy day on the trade front on Monday, The Milwaukee Brewers saw their four game winning streak come to an end.

Jimmy Nelson struggled, allowing six runs on eight hits in just four innings as the Brewers fell to the Padres 7-3 at Petco Park.

Padres starter Jarred Cosart walked six and hit a batter in a short 3 1/3 inning stint, but he managed to make the key pitch when he needed it, keeping the Brewers off the scoreboard.

The Brewers best chance against Cosart came in the third when they loaded the bases with just one out.  First baseman Chris Carter grounded into an inning ending double play.

The Brewers led 2-1 in the fifth after Hernan Perez homered, but the Padres responded off of Nelson and took the lead for good.

Chris Carter capped off the scoring in the eighth inning with a solo home run, his third in the last four games and 25th of the season.

The Brewers played a fifth straight game without Ryan Braun with tightness in his right side.  He could return to the lineup tonight.

Brewers finish home stand by sweeping the Pirates (AUDIO)

August 1, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoEarly in the day, the Milwaukee Brewers thought they had a deal worked out with Cleveland that would send Jonathan Lucroy to the Indians for four players, including three prospects.  Lucroy vetoed the deal and remained a Brewer, for now.

That activity off the field didn’t seem to bother the Brewers on the field.  They knocked off Pittsburgh 4-2, sweeping the Pirates and capping off a 10-game home stand with a 7-3 record.

Lucroy could still find a new home today.  The Major League trade deadline is 3 p.m. this afternoon.

Matt Garza worked five solid innings, allowing one earned run and four relievers combined to finish the deal. [Read more…]

Guerra stays hot, leads Brewers past Pirates

July 30, 2016 By Bill Scott

Junior Guerra

Junior Guerra

Junior Guerra pitched another gem for the Milwaukee Brewers, leading the crew to a 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in their series opener at Miller Park.

Guerra pitched 8 2/3 innings, allowing a run on four-hits to improve to 7-2 with a stingy 2.70 ERA.

Guerra was staked to an early 2-0 lead when Chris Carter clubbed a two-run homer in the first.  The Brewers other run came in the sixth on back-to-back doubles from Scooter Gennett and Keon Broxton.  Gennett extended his hitting streak to nine games.

Guerra allowed the first to Pirate hitters to reach base in the ninth with a single and a walk.  But Craig Counsell took a trip to the mound only to encourage Guerra, who was allowed to stay in the game to try to complete the shutout.

Guerra got two outs but wound up giving up a single run.  Jeremy Jeffress would come on to get the last out and did so on one pitch for his 25th save of the season.

The Brewers have won four of their last five games and will host game two against the Pirates today.

The St. Louis Cardinals ended a seven game losing streak at Busch Stadium on Friday night, knocking off the Milwaukee Brewers 7-1.

Matt Garza’s throwing error in the fourth helped the Cardinals score five runs and open a 6-1 lead.  The Brewers would never challenge from there.

The Brewers dropped to 2-5 this season against the Cardinals and are now 18-31 at Busch Stadium since 2010 and 1-3 this season.

In 5 2/3 innings, Garza allowed a season-high nine hits, seven runs (four earned) and three walks while striking out six.

Cardinals starter Jaime Garcia allowed a second-inning home run to Chris Carter, then held the Brewers in check.  He improved to 6-6 on the season and 11-5 lifetime against the Brewers.

Jimmy Nelson pitches game two of the series for the Brewers today.

Davies no-hit bid, Carter two HR game propel Brewers past Oakland (AUDIO)

June 8, 2016 By Bill Scott

Zach Davies

Zach Davies

He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and even though his bid for history ended because of a home run, Brewers start Zach Davies definitely riding a big wave of momentum.

The diminutive righthander allowed two runs on two hits over his seven innings in a 5-4 Milwaukee win to open a brief two-game interleague series against Oakland at Miller Park. Davies also with five strikeouts.

Davies (4-3), who went 3-2 as a September call-up in 2015 and is pitching for a permanent place in the Brewers rotation, has won three straight starts. In his last six outings, Milwaukee (27-31) is 5-1.

Meanwhile, the offense came almost exclusively from the bat of first baseman Chris Carter, who slugged a two-run homer in the second inning and a three-run blast in the sixth to account for all five of Milwaukee’s runs. Carter leads the team with 16 homers and 39 runs batted in after the two monster shots beyond the centerfield wall. [Read more…]
