The Milwaukee Brewers signed left-handed pitcher Boone Logan to a one-year contract with a club option for 2019.

The 33-year-old Logan owns a career record of 29-23 with a 4.47 ERA and 3 saves in 619 appearances, all coming in relief.  Logan has stints with the White Sox, Atlanta, New York Yankees, Colorado and Cleveland.

Logan went 1-0 with a 4.71 ERA in 38 appearances last season with Cleveland.  He struck out 28 batters in 21 innings.

Jungmann moving on

The Brewers also gave right-handed pitcher Taylor Jungmann his release to allow him an opportunity to pitch in Japan.

Jungmann was the team’s first-round pick (12th overall) in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft.  He pitched in parts of three seasons (2015-17) with the Brewers.

The Brewers 40-man roster is currently at capacity.

Peralta leads Brewers to first win of the season

Wily Peralta pitched five innings of three-hit, shutout ball to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to their first win of the season, a 6-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night at Miller Park.  Peralta walked one and struck out five hitters and left after five with a rising pitch count.

Eric Thames led off the fourth inning with a home run to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead.  Ryan Braun followed with an infield single and Travis Shaw added another round-tripper to put the Brewers up 3-0.

Jonathan Villar also homered for the Brewers in the victory, but the turning point may have been the sixth inning.  The Rockies had runners at 1st and 2nd with nobody out and Carlos Gonzalez hit a sharp grounder that looked like trouble,  but Thames made a diving stop and got a force out at second base.  Villar and Orlando Arcia combined to turn a double play to get the Brewers out of the jam. Brewers to send Jungmann to Biloxi

The Milwaukee Brewers reassigned right-handed pitcher Taylor Jungmann to Class AA Biloxi after a period of rest and mental rejuvenation at the team’s training facility in Phoenix.

Jungmann started the season with the Brewers but got off to a bad start, going 0-4 with a 9.15 ERA in five starts.  Jungmann was sent down to Class AAA Colorado Springs, which is a difficult place to pitch.  He went 1-3 with a 9.87 ERA in eight starts until now.

Instead of sending Jungmann back to Colorado Springs, the Brewers decided it was best to send him to Biloxi with the move to not be looked at as a demotion.

Jungmann is scheduled to start Thursday night for Biloxi against Birmingham.

The Milwaukee Brewers will give Matt Garza his first start of the season in San Francisco on Tuesday night against the Giants.  To make room in the rotation, the Brewers sent opening day starter Wily Peralta to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Peralta earned a win in his last outing on Saturday, improving to 4-7.  He worked five innings, allowing three runs on five hits, walking one and striking out four.

But Peralta, in 13 starts this season, carried an ERA of 6.68.  He’s allowed a major-league high 97 hits over 66 innings with 42 strikeouts.  He pitched six innings in just two of his starts this season.

Peralta is the second starter sent down to the minors this season.  Taylor Jungman was also optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs earlier and has struggled.  In his eight starts with the Sky Sox, Jungmann is 1-3 with a 9.87 ERA.

Brewers to add pitcher to start Tuesday night

May 2, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoTriple “A” right handed pitcher Junior Guerra will start for the Milwaukee Brewers Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The 31-year-old Guerra replaces Taylor Jungmann, who went down to Triple “A” Colorado Springs last week after an 0-4 start with the Brewers.

Guerra is 0-2 for the Sky Sox with a 4.63 ERA, but Brewers’ manager Craig Counsell says he has thrown well, especially in his first couple of starts, with 23 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings.

New general manager David Stearns made Guerra his first acquisition last October after the Chicago White Sox put him on waivers.  He made three relief appearances for Chicago last year and had a 3.13 ERA in 31 total starting and relief outings in Double “A” and Triple “A” in 2015.

Taylor Jungmann warms up in Chicago

Taylor Jungmann warms up in Chicago

The Milwaukee Brewers don’t seem to have any great options for a replacement, but the team sent struggling starter Taylor Jungmann to Class AAA Colorado Springs on Friday.  They called up reliever David Goforth to take his spot on the 25-man roster.

Jungmann departs with an 0-4 record and 9.15 earned run average in five starts.  He lasted just 3 2/3 innings in his most recent loss, 7-2 to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Thursday.

In three of his five starts this season, Jungmann pitched four innings or less.

Counting the latter part of the 2015 season, Jungmann is 0-7 with a 9.35 ERA in his last 10 starts.

Who the Brewers turn to for a replacement is still up in the air.  Junior Guerra is 0-2 with a 4.63 ERA in four starts at Colorado Springs.  Left-hander Josh Hader is off to a great start at Class AA Biloxi, but the Brewers would like to not have to rush him to the majors at this point.

Goforth spent time with the Brewers last season and was 1-1 with a 4.35 ERA in eight appearances at Colorado Springs so far this spring.

Brewers fail to deliver key blow against Arrieta (AUDIO)

The Milwaukee Brewers loaded the bases in the first inning against Chicago ace Jake Arrieta, but couldn’t deliver the big blow as Arrieta struck out Chris Carter and Kirk Nieuwenhuis to wiggle out of the jam.  The Cubs went on to win 7-2, taking both games in the series.

Arrieta, who tossed his second no-hitter in his last start, was pitching on six days rest and clearly wasn’t sharp.  His streak of 52 2/3 scoreless innings at Wrigley Field ended in the fifth when Alex Presley’s double drove in Jonathan Villar.

The final score could have been much worse, but the Cubs went just 2 for 17 with runners in scoring position and stranded 14 runners in all. [Read more…]

Brewers split interleague series with Twins (AUDIO)

April 22, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoThe Milwaukee Brewers ended up with a split of their home-and-home interleague series with the Minnesota Twins.  The Twins beat the Brewers 8-1 in the series finale on Thursday, splitting their four games with the Twins at two games apiece.

The Twins won their first road game in eight tries, becoming the final Major League team to win away from home this season.

Ricky Nolasco won his first decision, striking out seven in six innings and retired 12 straight Brewers after giving up Milwaukee’s only run of the day, an R-B-I double from Ryan Braun in the first inning.  The Twins outhit the Brewers eleven to five. [Read more…]

The St. Louis Cardinals scored nine runs in the first three innings, including eight off of Milwaukee starter Taylor Jungmann, coasting to a 10-1 win over the Brewers at Busch Stadium.

St. Louis pounded out 19 hits, most ever in a Cardinals home opener.  Eight of them went for doubles and two for triples.

Jungmann gave up eight of the runs, five of the doubles and both triples.  It’s almost as if the Cardinals knew what was coming.

“When you get hit around like that, it’s always something you want to look at,” he said.  “I’ll go back and look at it.  It’s not the first thing I’ll look at.  I’ll look at how I attacked them and things like that.” [Read more…]
