Brewers avoid sweep with win over Giants (Audio)

April 7, 2016 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers avoided a season-opening sweep at the hands of San Francisco, knocking off the Giants 4-3 at Miller Park on Wednesday afternoon.

Chris Carter, who clubbed a solo home run earlier, broke a 3-3 tie in the 7th inning with a sacrifice fly, delivering the game winning run.  His home run came off of Giants starter Jeff Samardzija, to right center.

The Brewers avoided digging a big hole early, thanks to the defense of third baseman Aaron Hill.  In the first inning, Hill raced down the left-field line to haul in Brandon Belt’s pop fly with an over-the-shoulder catch.  Hill then turned and fired a strike to the plate to get Buster Posey tagging from third base. Brewers place Garza on DL

April 5, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoThe Milwaukee Brewers have placed starting pitcher Matt Garza on the disabled list before he even got to his first start.

Garza had right shoulder tightness during his last exhibition start against the Houston Astros.  His trip to the DL is dated back to April 2, the day after he suffered a right lat strain.

The Brewers are calling up Tyler Cravy to add help to their bullpen.  Because of a pair of off days coming up, the Brewers won’t need a fifth starter for a while.

Garza is coming off a 6-14 season with a 5.63 ERA which led to a demotion to the bullpen.

Taylor Jungmann will move up in the rotation and pitch the series finale against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.

Scooter Gennett made a successful Cactus League debut on Thursday, helping the Milwaukee Brewers pull out a 5-2 win over the Texas Rangers in Surprise, Arizona.

Gennett has missed the entire spring with a sore shoulder but returned in the designated hitters role last night.  He singled, doubled and homered in three at-bats, finishing a triple shy of the cycle.

Taylor Jungmann gave up one single and one walk in four scoreless innings, as the Brewers improved to 8-6-and-1 in the Cactus League.

Barrios dealing with shoulder injury

Reliever Yhonathan Barrios will not start the season in the bullpen, after the team sent M-R-I results on a serious shoulder injury to famed surgeon James Andrews for a second opinion.

Manager Craig Counsell said surgery is possible, after the 24-year-old Barrios suffered discomfort in winter ball last November and again at Spring Training.

Braun ties Yount’s home run record

Ryan Braun: UPI/Bill Greenblatt

Ryan Braun clubbed a fifth inning grand slam and drove in five runs to help the Milwaukee Brewers pull out a 6-1 win and three-game sweep over the Philadelphia Phillies at Miller Park.

Braun’s home run is his 21st this season and 251st of his career, which  ties him with Robin Yount for the all-time franchise lead.

Braun’s blast came off of Phillies starter Aaron Harang (5-14) who leads the league in losses.  So do the Phillies, who tacked on three more this weekend.  The Phillies fell to
46-72, the worst record in the Major Leagues.

Robin Yount spent his entire career with the Brewers, winning a pair of MVP awards.

Taylor Jungmann (7-4) rebounded from a poor outing in Chicago last week, to lead the Brewers to the victory.  Jungmann pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing just three hits while walking two and striking out nine.  His ERA was lowered to 2.23.

The Brewers open a three-game series against the Miami Marlins at home tonight.  Matt Garza (6-12, 4.82 ERA) pitches for the Brewers.  Justin Nicolino (1-1, 4.86 ERA) starts for Miami.
