Brewers go 2-4 on trip out west

August 8, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoJimmy Nelson’s problems continued on Sunday as the Milwaukee Brewers dropped a 9-3 decision to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Nelson failed to make it through the fifth inning for the third straight outing, lasting just 4 1/3 innings on Sunday.

Nelson allowed 7 runs (6-earned) on seven hits, walking three and striking out four.

The Brewers did jump out to a 2-0 lead.  Jonathan Villar scored on a wild pitch and homered, accounting for both runs early.

With Arizona up 3-2, the Brewers tied it in the fifth when Villar scored on Orlando Arcia’s single.  But the Diamondbacks took the lead right back, scoring twice in the bottom half of the inning. [Read more…]

Smith activated, Blazek to the DL (AUDIO)

June 2, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoLeft-handed reliever Will Smith was activated from the disabled list on Wednesday.  He wasn’t needed after Zach Davies pitched eight solid innings in the Milwaukee Brewers 3-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

To make room on the roster, the Brewers sent David Goforth back to Class AAA Colorado Springs.

Smith missed the first two months of the season after suffering a torn lateral collateral ligament in his right knee.  He was injured while trying to remove a shoe.  Smith decided to try to avoid surgery that would have cost him the season.

Smith was originally supposed to share the closers role with Jeremy Jeffress.  While Jeffress has flourished in his absence, manager Craig Counsell indicated he would still consider returning to that idea. [Read more…]

Brewers send Jungmann to the minors

April 29, 2016 By Bill Scott

Taylor Jungmann warms up in Chicago

Taylor Jungmann warms up in Chicago

The Milwaukee Brewers don’t seem to have any great options for a replacement, but the team sent struggling starter Taylor Jungmann to Class AAA Colorado Springs on Friday.  They called up reliever David Goforth to take his spot on the 25-man roster.

Jungmann departs with an 0-4 record and 9.15 earned run average in five starts.  He lasted just 3 2/3 innings in his most recent loss, 7-2 to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Thursday.

In three of his five starts this season, Jungmann pitched four innings or less.

Counting the latter part of the 2015 season, Jungmann is 0-7 with a 9.35 ERA in his last 10 starts.

Who the Brewers turn to for a replacement is still up in the air.  Junior Guerra is 0-2 with a 4.63 ERA in four starts at Colorado Springs.  Left-hander Josh Hader is off to a great start at Class AA Biloxi, but the Brewers would like to not have to rush him to the majors at this point.

Goforth spent time with the Brewers last season and was 1-1 with a 4.35 ERA in eight appearances at Colorado Springs so far this spring.

The Milwaukee Brewers extended their season best win streak to six games, rolling to a 12-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night at Great American Ballpark.

Five of the six wins have come on the road where the Brewers are hitting .371 with 40 runs scored.  Carlos Gomez had three hits, including a grand slam that broke the game open.

On the mound, Mike Fiers continued his strong pitching of late, holding the Reds to three hits over seven scoreless innings.  The Reds didn’t get a runner past first base on Fiers until the 7th inning.  Fiers improved to 4-7 and lowered his ERA to 3.83.  He walked two and struckout two in the win.

Fiers performance couldn’t have come at a better time.  The Brewers bullpen was out of gas.  Before the game, the Brewers summoned right handed pitchers David Goforth and Tyler Cravy from the minors for help.

To make room on the roster, the Brewers sent pitcher Corey Knebel and infielder Jason Rodgers to Colorado Springs.  The Brewers now have 13 pitchers on their 25-man roster.

Game 2 of the series is in Cincinnati today.

Wily Peralta

Wily Peralta

The Milwaukee Brewers just can’t stay healthy.  Starting pitcher Wily Peralta was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique.

Peralta suffered the injury while throwing a pitch in the fourth inning of his last start on May 22 in Atlanta.

Peralta is expected to miss a minimum of four weeks.  In nine starts this season, Peralta is 1-5 with a 4.00 earned run average.

The Brewers are expected to recall relief pitcher David Goforth from Class AAA Colorado Springs today.  Who takes Peralta’s spot in the rotation is still being determined.

AUDIO: Craig Counsell asked who takes over for Peralta? :14

Goforth was 0-2 with a 3.43 ERA, recording 18 strikeouts in 16 games at Colorado Springs.
