Thames powers Brewers past Astros

September 4, 2019 By Bill Scott

Eric Thames

Eric Thames’ three-run homer capped a four-run third inning and the Milwaukee Brewers went on to double up the Astros 4-2 at Miller Park.  Thames homer came off of Houston starter Zach Greinke.  Ryan Braun’s RBI single tied it at one for the Brewers, before Thames long ball.

Jordan Lyles continued his strong performance on the mound, throwing 6 1/3 innings.  Drew Pomeranz followed with  1 2/3 innings of solid relief before Josh Hader finished up in the 9th for his 28th save.

Lyles (10-8), surrendered six hits, struck out two and didn’t issue a walk.  His ERA in seven starts for the Brewers, dropped to 2.56.

With the Brewers leading 4-1 in the sixth, Houston’s Alex Bregman clubbed a solo homer to center to make it 4-2 to close out the scoring.

Christian Yelich clubbed a game-tying home run in the ninth inning, but Milwaukee reliever Junior Guerra gave up a solo homer to George Springer in the top of the 10th as the Houston Astros pulled out a 3-2, 10-inning win in the series opener at Miller Park.

Yasmani Grandal also homered for the Brewers other run.

Yelich was called out on strikes in the bottom of the tenth for the second time in the game.  The other came in the sixth inning.  Both calls by home plate umpire Ben May were high and out of the strike zone and it had the Brewers plenty mad.

“It’s two awful calls,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said.  “I have to say it.  It’s the magnitude of the spot, it’s the hitter.  It’s bad calls.  It’s bad umpiring.”

With reporters surrounding Yelich’s locker after the game, the Brewers right-fielder avoided going off on the umpire to avoid a fine by the league. [Read more…]

The Houston Astros announced Wednesday that outfielder Carlos Gomez has been designated for assignment.

The former Brewers center fielder is hitting .210 in 85 games with the Astros this season.  He has just five home runs and 29 RBIs.

The 30-year-old Gomez was dealt by the Brewers to the Astros in a trade deadline deal in July of 2015.  After the  trade, Gomez hit .242 with four home runs and 13 RBIs.

Gomez was an All-Star with the Brewers in both 2013 and 2014.  He is in the final season of a three-year, $24 million contract that is paying him $9 million this season.

The Astros have 10 days to either trade Gomez, assign him to the minor leagues or release him.  Gomez could also be claimed by another team off irrevocable outright waivers.

Brewers blown out in Houston

June 19, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers began the final leg of their nine game road trip on the losing end of a 10-1 blowout in Houston Tuesday night.  The Brewers split their first six in the trip that put them in Miami and Cincinnati.

Alfredo Figaro struggled in the start of Milwaukee.  He lasted just 4 1/3 innings while allowing 5-runs, 4-earned, on 5-hits.  It was the 3rd start of the year of Figaro who took the spot of Marco Estrada in the rotation when he went on the 15-DL with a hamstring injury.  Jordan Lyle notched the victory for Houston giving up the 1-run on 7-hits in 7-innings of work.

Jaun Francisco had his best game as a Brewers going 3 for 4 at the plate.  Before Tuesday, Francisco had just 3-hits since coming to Milwaukee in a trade with the Atlanta Braves.  Francisco scored the lone run of the game on an RBI infield-single by Scooter Gennett.  Carlos Gomez also added 2-hits and a spectacular catch in center field.

Kyle Lohse will get the ball Wednesday night in game 2 of the 3 game series with Houston.  Erik Bedard will go for the Astros.  First pitch from Minute Maid Park is 7:10.
