Brewers salvage series finale

June 26, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers played without Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy and Aramis Ramirez, getting the day off after a 16-inning marathon the night before.  But the Brewers still found plenty of offense to salvage the final game of the series, pulling out a 9-2 win over the Washington Nationals.

Scooter Gennett drove in five runs with a second inning grand slam and a run scoring single and Khris Davis drove in three more runs with a homer and a two-run single to lead the Brewers.

But even more important, Marco Estrada, who has struggled on the mound for more than a month, came through with his strongest outing in some time.

Estrada (7-4) didn’t allow a home run for just the second time this season.  He’s already surrendered a major-league-high 24.

Washington scored first in the second inning and jumped in front 1-0 on a Nate McLouth groundout.  But the Brewers loaded the bases in the bottom half and Scooter Gennett clubbed a grand slam home run off of Washington starter Stephen Strasburg.  [Read more…]

Brewers send Fiers to Nashville

June 26, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers needed to add a fresh arm in their bullpen.  Mike Fiers worked four innings in Tuesday’s 16-inning marathon loss to Washington.  Yesterday, the Brewers optioned Fiers to AAA Nashville.

The Brewers called up Alfredo Figaro to replace Fiers, who ended up pitching two scoreless innings of relief in last night’s 9-2 victory over the Nationals.

Fiers was originally recalled June 8 when Tyler Thornburg went on the 15-day disabled list.  He leaves Milwaukee with an 0-1 record and a 2.57 ERA.  He’s expected to rejoin Nashville’s starting rotation and make a start next Monday.

player to be named.

The 30-year old Axford is 6-7 with a 4.45 ERA in 62 relief appearances this season.  Axford didn’t record a save this season, but he ranks second on the all-time franchise list in that category (106), trailing only Dan Plesac (133).

Brewers head to red hot Pittsburgh

June 28, 2013 By Bill Scott

In past years when the Milwaukee Brewers were going through struggles, the Pittsburgh Pirates were usually just what the doctor ordered.  That may not be the case this time around.

Milwaukee opens a 3-game weekend series with the Pirates tonight at PNC Park.  Pittsburgh has rattled off 6-straight victories and sits at 48-30 on the season.  They are tied with St. Louis for first in the NL Central and for the best record in baseball.  Milwaukee’s loss to Chicago Thursday sent them back to the cellar in the NL Central with a 32-45 mark.

Johnny Hellweg will make is Major League debut tonight for the Brewers.  He replaced Alfredo Figaro in the rotation when Figaro was placed on the DL with an oblique strain.  Hellweg was part of the Zack Greinke deal with the Angels at last year’s trade deadline.  So far in 2013, Hellweg was 7-4 with a 2.82 ERA at Triple-A Nashville.

Friday’s first pitch is 6:05.

Milwaukee’s injury forecast is not clearing up

June 26, 2013 By Bill Scott

Many things can be brought up when it comes to figuring out what has gone wrong so far in 2013 for the Milwaukee Brewers.  Though injuries can sometimes be an excuse, the fact of the matter is Milwaukee has been hurt in that department.

Tuesday, the Brewers had to put another player on the 15-DL as starting pitcher Alfredo Figora has an oblique injury.  Starter Johnny Hellweg was called up from Triple-A Nashville to give Milwaukee another starting arm.  Manager Ron Roenicke talks about the injury…

Brewers lose to Braves Sunday, Gomez injured (Audio)

June 24, 2013 By Bill Scott

A rough first inning Sunday prevented the Brewers from notching their first series sweep since mid-April.  They fell to the Braves 7-4 at Miller Park.

Milwaukee starter Alfredo Figaro served up a grand slam to Atlanta’s Brian McCann in the opening inning digging Milwaukee an early hole.  Figaro lasted just 3 1/3 innings on the afternoon allowing 6-runs on 8-hits as he fell to 1-2 on the season.  Brewers Manager Ron Roenicke cited location as Figaro’s biggest downfall…

Brewers blown out in Houston

June 19, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers began the final leg of their nine game road trip on the losing end of a 10-1 blowout in Houston Tuesday night.  The Brewers split their first six in the trip that put them in Miami and Cincinnati.

Alfredo Figaro struggled in the start of Milwaukee.  He lasted just 4 1/3 innings while allowing 5-runs, 4-earned, on 5-hits.  It was the 3rd start of the year of Figaro who took the spot of Marco Estrada in the rotation when he went on the 15-DL with a hamstring injury.  Jordan Lyle notched the victory for Houston giving up the 1-run on 7-hits in 7-innings of work.

Jaun Francisco had his best game as a Brewers going 3 for 4 at the plate.  Before Tuesday, Francisco had just 3-hits since coming to Milwaukee in a trade with the Atlanta Braves.  Francisco scored the lone run of the game on an RBI infield-single by Scooter Gennett.  Carlos Gomez also added 2-hits and a spectacular catch in center field.

Kyle Lohse will get the ball Wednesday night in game 2 of the 3 game series with Houston.  Erik Bedard will go for the Astros.  First pitch from Minute Maid Park is 7:10.
