Brewers send Arcia to Atlanta

April 7, 2021 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers are going all in on Luis Urias at shortstop, trading Orlando Arcia to the Atlanta Braves for a pair of pitchers on Tuesday.

The Brewers acquired right-handers Patrick Weigel and Chad Sobotka in the deal, assigning both to the teams Alternate Training Site in Appleton.  The Brewers then replaced Arcia on the roster with veteran reliever Brad Boxberger.

Arcia was hitting .091 through the first four games, starting the team’s last two games at third base.

Arcia hit .260 in the pandemic shortened 2020 season but is a .244 career hitter.  Arcia’s best season came in 2017 when he hit .277 with 15 home runs and 53 RBI.

The 27-year-old Sobotka was a fourth-round draft pick of the Braves in 2014 and has pitched in 50 major-league games since 2018, all in relief.  He is 1-0 with a 5.36 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 47 innings.

The 26-year-old Weigel made his major league debut for the Braves last season, throwing 2/3 of an inning in one relief appearance.  He was a seventh-round pick by Atlanta in 2015 and missed most of the 2018 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.  He split the 2019 season at Class AA and AAA, going 6-2 with a 2.73 ERA in 28 games, including 18 starts.

The Brewers originally drafted Weigel out of Oxnard College in the 22nd round of the 2014 draft but were unable to sign him.  The Braves picked him the following year out of the University of Houston.

Brewers season ends in Wildcard Playoffs

October 2, 2020 By Bill Scott

Brandon Woodruff

The inability to score runs almost cost the Milwaukee Brewers a trip to the playoffs.  Once they got there, the lack of offense is what did them in.

Clayton Kershaw allowed just three hits and struck out 13 in eight innings of work to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-0 win over the Brewers, sweeping their best-of-three National League Wildcard series two-games-to-none.

The Dodgers advanced to the National League Division Series in Arlington, Texas, against the winner of St. Louis and San Diego (game 3 Friday night).

Kershaw issued just one walk, to Luis Urias in the eighth inning, then picked him off of first base.

Brandon Woodruff was spectacular through four innings for the Brewers, striking out nine Dodgers.  His only blemish in the hit column was an Austin Barnes single in the fourth.  But the Dodgers broke out in the fifth.

Cody Bellinger and Chris Taylor had back-to-back singles.  A.J. Pollock grounded into a fielder’s choice to third as Urias stepped on the bag for the force but his throw to first was in the dirt and couldn’t be gloved by Jedd Gyorko.  Barnes singled to drive in a run, then Mookie Betts doubled into the left-field corner to add two more runs, giving the Dodgers a 3-0 lead.

That chased Woodruff, who allowed three runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings.  As he walked off the mound, Woodruff yelled at home plate umpire Quinn Wolcott, who ejected him.  Woodruff was upset when he thought he had strike three on Barnes but it was called a ball.

The Brewers ended up striking out 28 times in the two games.  In their last 11 games (3-8), including the two playoff games, the Brewers scored just 20 runs.  They finished with an overall record of 29-33.

Brewers offense blows up in Detroit

September 10, 2020 By Bill Scott

Corbin Burnes

The Milwaukee Brewers have had plenty of opportunities to score runs over the last week but struggled to come up with the big hit to get it done.  They made up for it all in one game on Wednesday in Detroit.

The Brewers unleashed a 21-hit attack, clubbing five home runs and setting a franchise record with 13 extra base hits in a 19-0 win over the Tigers.

The bottom of the Brewers order did a lot of the damage too.  Orlando Arcia and rookie Tyrone Taylor had four hits each.  Luis Urias had three hits and five RBI and Jacob Nottingham added a two-run homer.

Jeff Gyorko hit a pair of solo home runs and Ryan Braun homered and drove in three runs.

The offense was just half of the winning equation.  Brewers right-hander Corbin Burnes put together his best outing of what is becoming a rock solid shortened season.  Burnes allowed just one hit over seven innings with no walks and 11 strikeouts.  He improved his record to 3-0 and saw his ERA drop to 1.99.

The Brewers are off on Thursday and open a big weekend series against the rival Cubs at Miller Park.

Orlando Arcia

After losing the series opener last Thursday, the Milwaukee Brewers were involved in three tight games with the Chicago Cubs, closing out the 4-game series with a 6-5 win on Sunday at Wrigley Field.  It gave the Brewers three of four in the series, including three straight wins.

Josh Hader came on in relief to get the save, but needed a 13-pitch at bat by Chicago’s Nico Hoerner with two outs in the ninth inning to close it out.  Hader has now appeared in six games for the Brewers and hasn’t given up a hit.

The three straight wins pulls the Brewers record for the season at 10-10.

The Brewers had 12 hits on the day, six of them coming from the eight and nine hitters.  In the eight spot, Luis Urias had his second straight three hit game.  In the nine-spot, Orlando Arcia had three hits, including a triple and a two-run homer.

Keston Hiura, who had struggled all season with the bat, had two hits, including a three-run homer off of Jon Lester in the third inning.

The Brewers have Monday off and continue their road trip in Minneapolis to face the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday.  Corbin Burnes will get the start on the mound for Milwaukee.

Brewers drop series finale to the Twins

August 13, 2020 By Bill Scott

Eric Lauer

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped their series finale against the Minnesota Twins, 12-2 on Wednesday night at Miller Park.

Byron Buxton clubbed two home runs and Miguel Sano also went yard for the Twins.

Eric Lauer gave up seven runs over 3 2/3 innings to take the loss, his second straight poor start.  Manager Craig Counsell told reporters after the game that they’ll discuss whether or not to remove Lauer from the starting rotation.

Luis Urias singled in the only two runs for the Brewers, who dropped to 7-9 on the season.

With the Brewers out of it early, Counsell used the opportunity to give shortstop Orlando Arcia some time in center field.  Arcia came off the bench in the sixth inning to take over in center for the first time in his career, but didn’t see any action there.

In an attempt to save the bullpen, Counsell also inserted infielder Jedd Gyorko into the game to pitch the ninth.  Gyorko allowed a leadoff single, then retired the next three batters, throwing a total of 11 pitches.

It was the third time that Gyorko has pitched in a major league game.  He tossed an inning for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2018 and a third of an inning for the Cardinals last season.

The Brewers hit the road now and will open a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Thursday night.  The Cubs are off to a 12-3 start this season.

Brewers offense back in slow-mode, fall to Twins

August 11, 2020 By Bill Scott

Keston Hiura

Just one day after the Milwaukee Brewers finally broke out for 9-runs in a 9-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds, they scored just two runs on Monday night in a 4-2 loss to the Minnesota Twins in the opener of a three-game series at Miller Park.

Eddie Rosario clubbed a third inning grand slam off of Milwaukee’s Adrian Houser for all of Minnesota’s runs, giving Randy Dobnak (3-1) the win with five solid innings.

Luis Urias, who was activated from the injured list earlier in the day, singled in his first at bat.  He came around to score the Brewers first run on a double from Orlando Arcia.  The Brewers other run came on a Keston Hiura home run in the eighth inning, his second in as many games.

The Brewers brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning after Manny Pina clubbed a two-out double, but Mark Mathias struck out to end it.

Freddy Peralta gave the Brewers four innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out eight.

The Brewers and Twins play game two of the series Tuesday night.  Josh Lindblom (1-0, 4.15) gets the start for the Brewers.  Minnesota will go with Tyler Clippard (0-0, 1.17) in a bullpen by committee start.

Morrison blast leads Gold past Blue at Miller Park

July 17, 2020 By Bill Scott

Logan Morrison

The Gold team is off to a 3-0 start in the Milwaukee Brewers Blue & Gold World Series at Miller Park.

The Gold earned a 4-1 victory on Thursday night, thanks to the first inning three-run home run off the bat of Logan Morrison.

Morrison is a non-roster invitee to camp and is making a strong bid to make the Brewers 30-man roster that will open the season next Friday in Chicago against the Cubs.  Currently, the Brewers 40-man roster is full and they would have to cut a player to make room.  But Morrison had a good spring and has picked up in this summer camp, where he left off.  Not to mention, he would give the Brewers another left-handed power bat.

Morrison’s blast came off of Wily Peralta, who eventually settled down, allowing no more runs in 3 2/3 innings of work.  Peralta allowed four hits in all with no walks while striking out one.

Right-hander Josh Lindblom allowed a run on four hits over five innings to earn the win for the Gold team.  Devin Williams and Justin Grimm also turned in solid relief efforts in the game. [Read more…]

Brewers pitcher Eric Lauer hoping to be ready for season opener (AUDIO)

July 13, 2020 By Bill Scott

Eric Lauer

Newly acquired left-handed pitcher Eric Lauer is one of three players on the Milwaukee Brewers injured list, joining former San Diego teammate Luis Urias and left-handed pitcher Angel Perdomo, all related to COVID-19.

Urias and Perdomo both tested positive for the coronavirus and are in quarantine.  Lauer was forced to delay his return to the team because he came into close contact with someone who has tested positive for the virus.  According to protocol, Lauer had to quarantine despite not testing positive himself.

Lauer is expected to pitch a bullpen on Tuesday and both he and manager Craig Counsell said he could remain on track to be on the team’s opening day roster. [Read more…]

Two Brewers test positive for COVID-19

July 6, 2020 By Bill Scott

Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell announced Monday that two players, infielder Luis Urias and pitcher Angel Perdomo, tested positive for COVID-19.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Counsell said both players tested positive before last week’s intake for summer camp.  They’re both asymtomatic and are currently in COVID-19 protocol.

It’s another setback for Urias, who was acquired by the Brewers in the offseason in a trade with the San Diego Padres.  Urias sat out all spring after surgery on his left hand for a broken hamate bone.  Urias had worked his way back from the injury and was set to see his first Cactus League action when games were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 26-year-old Perdomo got off to a great start in the spring, striking out 10 batters and allowing just one hit over four innings.

It’s a minor setback for both and Counsell said the Brewers expect them to contribute to the team this season.

Brewer players Urias and Taylor slowed by wrist injuries

January 29, 2020 By Bill Scott

Newly acquired Milwaukee Brewers infielder Luis Urias and outfielder Tyrone Taylor are both recovering from surgery that is expected to slow their start to the upcoming season.

Urias, who was acquired from the San Diego Padres in a four-player trade in late November, has surgery on Tuesday for a broken hamate bone in his left hand.  He’s expected to be out for eight weeks.

That will likely mean Urias won’t be ready to start the regular season with the Brewers, opting for a minor league rehab start to the season instead.

Taylor had off-season surgery in November on his left wrist and is expected to be restricted from baseball activity when training camp opens in a couple of weeks.  He’ll be working his way back into baseball activities as the spring goes on.

The 26-year-old Taylor hit .269 in 92 games at Class AAA San Antonio, adding 14 home runs and 59 RBI.  He later appeared in 15 games with the Brewers as a September call-up, going 4 for 10 with one RBI.
