Inconsistent offense leads to another Brewers loss

August 21, 2020 By Bill Scott

Every time you think the Milwaukee Brewers offense is starting to show some signs of stringing together some success, they struggle to keep it going.  That was the case again on Thursday night when they failed to get a hit until the fifth inning and watched the Minnesota Twins pull away for a 7-1 victory at Target Field.

Twins starter Jose Berrios entered the game with a 1-3 record and a 5.92 ERA.  He pitched six innings of one-hit ball, walking one and striking out nine.

Minnesota had chances to add to their 1-0 lead, but a pair of solid defensive plays by the Brewers, kept the Twins off the scoreboard.

The Twins would finally add a run in the sixth inning, chasing Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff (1-2) and pushing their lead to 2-0 on a sacrifice fly off of reliever Freddy Peralta.

The Brewers cut the lead in half in the seventh when Justin Smoak clubbed a solo home run.  But Minnesota came right back in the bottom half, increasing the lead to 4-1 when Nelson Cruz clubbed a two-run homer.

The Twins then blew the game open in the eighth, scoring three runs off of Angel Perdomo.

The loss dropped the Brewers back below .500 at 11-12.  They’ll open a three-game series in Pittsburgh against the Pirates on Friday night.  Adrian Houser (1-1, 3.27) pitches for the Brewers.  Chad Kuhl (0-1, 3.21) goes for the Pirates.

Brewers power past Twins

August 20, 2020 By Bill Scott

Brett Anderson pitched six strong innings to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 9-3 win over the Minnesota Twins at Target Field on Wednesday night.

Anderson (1-2) posted his longest outing of the season, working six innings while allowing a run on five hits with five strikeouts.

The Brewers got to Twins starter Rich Hill (1-1) early, scoring four runs on four hits in the third inning.  The Brewers also put together a four run fifth to break the game open.

Ryan Braun, Christian Yelich, Avisail Garcia and Keston Hiura all homered for the Brewers.  In his past 10 games, Yelich is hitting .324 with three homers and eight RBI.

The Brewers have won 4 of their last 5 games to climb back to .500 at 11-11.  They’ll send Brandon Woodruff (1-1, 3.16 ERA) to the mound in the series finale tonight.  The Twins counter with right-hander Jose Berrios (1-3, 5.92).  Berrios has given up eight runs in 9 1/3 innings over his last two starts.

Brewers break up Maeda’s no-hit bid but fall to Twins

August 19, 2020 By Bill Scott

Eric Sogard

The Milwaukee Brewers foiled Kenta Maeda’s bid for a no-hitter in the 9th inning, then scored three runs to force extra innings.  But the rally fell short as the Brewers dropped their series opener to the Minnesota Twins 4-3 in 12 innings on Tuesday night at Target Field.

Jorge Polanco’s slow infield roller scored the winning run in the bottom of the 12th to win it for the Twins.

Maeda took a no-hitter into the 9th, having struck out 12 and retiring 20 Brewers in a row at one point.  That’s when Eric Sogard led off the ninth with a single to right-center field to end Maeda’s night.

The Twins went to Taylor Rogers out of the bullpen and Milwaukee’s Avisail Garcia greeted him with a double to put runners at second and third.  After Christian Yelich walked, Keston Hiura drove in a run with a single to center.

Jedd Gyorko followed with a ground ball up the middle to drive in Garcia, but in an attempt to turn a double play, the Twins Ildemaro Vargas threw wildly, allowing Yelich to score to tie the game 3-3.

The Brewers had a chance to go ahead in the top of the 12th.  They had runners at 1st and 3rd with nobody out but [Read more…]

Brewers drop series finale to the Twins

August 13, 2020 By Bill Scott

Eric Lauer

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped their series finale against the Minnesota Twins, 12-2 on Wednesday night at Miller Park.

Byron Buxton clubbed two home runs and Miguel Sano also went yard for the Twins.

Eric Lauer gave up seven runs over 3 2/3 innings to take the loss, his second straight poor start.  Manager Craig Counsell told reporters after the game that they’ll discuss whether or not to remove Lauer from the starting rotation.

Luis Urias singled in the only two runs for the Brewers, who dropped to 7-9 on the season.

With the Brewers out of it early, Counsell used the opportunity to give shortstop Orlando Arcia some time in center field.  Arcia came off the bench in the sixth inning to take over in center for the first time in his career, but didn’t see any action there.

In an attempt to save the bullpen, Counsell also inserted infielder Jedd Gyorko into the game to pitch the ninth.  Gyorko allowed a leadoff single, then retired the next three batters, throwing a total of 11 pitches.

It was the third time that Gyorko has pitched in a major league game.  He tossed an inning for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2018 and a third of an inning for the Cardinals last season.

The Brewers hit the road now and will open a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Thursday night.  The Cubs are off to a 12-3 start this season.

Brewers use long ball to beat the Twins

August 12, 2020 By Bill Scott

Manny Pina

The Milwaukee Brewers have been waiting for their home run bats to come alive.  They broke out on Tuesday night, clubbing four home runs in a 6-4 win over the Minnesota Twins at Miller Park.

In the teams first 14 games, the Brewers had just 13 home runs.  On Tuesday night, the Brewers first hitter, Avisail Garcia sent his first home run of the season into the seats to get the ball rolling.

Catcher Manny Pina went yard twice, the first multi-homer game of his career and Jeff Gyorko delivered the game-winning shot off of Twins closer Taylor Rogers in the eighth inning to snap a 4-4 tie.

Pina extended his hitting streak to five games, the longest streak by a Brewer this season.  The Brewers backup catcher is hitting .429 (6-14) during that stretch.

At the start of the season, the Brewers pitching was expected to be the teams weakness.  That hasn’t been the case.  The Brewers are just 7-8 and the pitching staff deserves a lot of the credit for those seven wins, not to mention holding their team in games with chances to win. [Read more…]

Grisham delivers game winner for Brewers

August 15, 2019 By Bill Scott

Rookie Trent Grisham delivered a three-run homer in the 8th inning on Wednesday, sending the Milwaukee Brewers to a come-from-behind 6-5 win over the Minnesota Twins.

Grisham was eventually put out the night before by Sergio Romo during a 9-pitch at bat, but Grisham used that experience to take Romo deep on Wednesday.

“Seeing him last night, kind of seeing how he was attacking me, attacking other guys kind of game me a little bit of an advantage,” said Grisham.

Grisham is hitting .314 in his first 35 Major League at bats.

Eric Thames added three hits and two RBI for the Brewers, who still made things interesting in the ninth inning.

Matt Albers came out of the bullpen and walked the bases loaded before eventually getting C.J. Cron to fly out to left-center to end it.

Gio Gonzalez wasn’t effective in his start, allowing three home runs, but the Brewers split the two game series and move within a game and a half of the Cardinals and Cubs in the Central Division.

The Brewers are off on Thursday before heading to Washington, D.C. to face the Nationals in the first of a three game series on Friday night.

Josh Hader surrendered a home run for the 13th time this season, in just 52 2/3 innings and the Minnesota Twins came from behind to knock off the Milwaukee Brewers 7-5 at Miller Park on Tuesday night.

Marwin Gonzalez was first pitch swinging in the 8th, taking a poorly located Hader fastball and depositing it over the wall in left-center field.  It was the sixth home run allowed by Hader in 12 2/3 innings since the all-star break.

Hader had allowed just nine home runs in 81 1/3 innings all of last season.

The Brewers had just taken the lead in the 7th inning by scoring four runs to go up 5-4.  Christian Yelich drove in a run with a double and Yasmani Grandal capped it with a  three-run homer.  It was Grandal’s 20th of the season, but his first since July 6. [Read more…]

Twins break open scoreless game with 5-run seventh

May 29, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers and Minnesota Twins were deadlocked in a scoreless battle through six-and-a-half innings on Tuesday night at Target Field.  When the Brewers went to their bullpen, the Twins put a 5-spot on the board and went on to post a 5-3 victory.

Twins left-hander Devin Smeltzer tossed six shutout innings and Brewers right-hander Zach Davies was equal to the task.  Then came the home half of the 7th when the Twins got to Brewer relievers Alex Claudio and Junior Guerra.

Jason Castro led off with a single to left and a Keston Hiura error put runners at the corners.  Max KLepler followed with a two-run double to right to put the Twins on the board 2-0. [Read more…]

Brewers blank Twins on 2-hits

July 4, 2018 By Bill Scott

Junior Guerra – File Photo by Bill Greenblatt/UPI

Junior Guerra and two relievers combined on a two-hitter as the Milwaukee Brewers blanked the Minnesota Twins 2-0 at Miller Park on Tuesday.

Guerra struck out eight over five innings for the win.  Josh Hader then worked three innings and Corey Knebel closed it out in the ninth inning for his 9th save.

Eric Thames belted a two-run homer in the fifth inning for the Brewers, his 12th of the season and third in the last six games.  The Brewers have now homered in nine straight games, which is a season high.  They have 14 home runs during that nine game stretch.  The franchise record is 20 games, which was set back in 2008.

Christian Yelich also returned to action, being inserted as a ninth inning defensive replacement in left field.  Yelich was back in action for the first time since leaving in the first inning last Thursday at Cincinnati.

Chase Anderson (6-6, 4.18) gets the start for the Brewers in the series finale on Wednesday afternoon (3:10 p.m.) at Miller Park.  Jose Berrios (8-6, 3.52) goes for Minnesota.

The Brewers start the day with a full one-game lead over the Cubs, who beat the Tigers 5-3 on Tuesday.

Brewers walk off win over the Twins

July 3, 2018 By Bill Scott

Brad Miller drew a bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning on Monday night, sending the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-5 win over the Minnesota Twins at Miller Park.

The Brewers surrendered a grand slam for the third straight game and trailed 5-1 before mounting their comeback.

Nate Orf, playing in his first major league game, was hit by a pitch from Zach Littell to lead off the 10th inning.  Manny Pina followed with a single and Keon Broxton walked.

Hernan Perez than bounced into a fielder’s choice before Miller’s walked ended the game.

Corey Knebel (2-0) pitched a scoreless 10th for the Brewers to earn the victory.  The Brewers got five scoreless innings from their bullpen.

Game two of the series is tonight at Miller Park.  Junior Guerra (4-5, 3.05) pitches for the Brewers.  Former Brewer Jake Odorizzi (3-5, 4.62) gets the start for the Twins.
