Green Bay Phoenix men fall to Detroit 84-76

January 6, 2013 By admin

Despite holding the Detroit College Titans to under 40% shooting from the field, the UW-Green Bay Phoenix men lost Saturday night, 84-76.  Where Detroit could not shoot from the field, they excelled shooting from the free throw line, hitting 90% of their 42 free throw attempts.

The Phoenix (6-9, 0-2 Horizon League), trailed the entire second half, but managed to pull the game within two points, with 3:39 to play in the game.  However, after making the game 68-66, Detroit went on to make 12 of 13 free throw attempts to put the game out of reach for the Phoenix.

Green Bay guard Kiefer Sykes led the team in scoring with 21 points, and was one of four Phoenix players in double-digit scoring.  Greg Mays scored 18 points, Alec Brown scored 16, and Sultan Muhammad scored 11 points on the night.

Forward Greg Mays led the Phoenix in rebounds with nine, and center Alec Brown had seven rebounds on the night.

For Detroit, they were led in scoring by Ray McCallum, who had 26 points.  Four other Titans hit the double-digit scoring mark, including Jason Calliste with 20 points, Juwan Howard, Jr. with 16 points, Doug Anderson with 12, and Nick Minnerath with 10 points.

The Titans were led in rebounds by Nick Minnerath who had eight, and Ray McCallum who had six rebounds.

The Phoenix’s next test is a Horizon League match-up against Loyola this Wednesday night.
