Whitewater wins CWS opener

May 24, 2014 By Bill Scott

De Pere native Mikole Pierce had two hits and four rbi’s to lead UW-Whitewater to an 8-1 win over Southern Maine on Day 1 of the NCAA Division III College World Series at Fox Cities Stadium.

The Warhawks (41-7) will play at 7:45 tonight against SUNY Cortland (36-8) in a rematch of the 2005 championship game.  The Warhawks won that game for their only D-3 Baseball Championship.

Whitewater starter Scott Plaza held Southern Maine to three hits over seven innings, walking two and striking out five.

Elsewhere on day 1 at Fox Cities Stadium on Friday, St. Thomas starter Eric Veglahn, a sophomore left-hander, retired the first 21 batters he faced.  Veglahn (9-0, 1.55) lost a perfect game with nobody out in the eighth on a bloop single to left.  He settled for a complete game 2-hitter with 12 strikeouts.  Linfield is the defending NCAA Champion.

Day 1 Scoreboard

St. Thomas 10, Linfield 0
Baldwin Wallace 5, Emory 4
SUNY Cortland 4, Salisbury 3
UW-Whitewater 8, Southern Maine 1

Saturday’s Schedule

10am  Linfield (37-8) vs. Emory (34-12)
