Brewers grab series opener from Astros

April 24, 2012 By Bill Scott

Offense has been hard to come by for the Milwaukee Brewers early this season, but the Brewers finally got out to a quick start in their 6-5 win over the Houston Astros at Miller Park on Monday night.

The Brewers scored three runs in the first inning off of Houston right-hander Lucas Harrell.  The last time the Brewers scored in the first inning was back on April 10 in Chicago.

The slumping Ryan Braun started to break out last night, collecting 3 hits, including a home run.

Zach Greinke struggled early but ended up pitching 6-innings and striking out 9.  Greinke improved to 13-0 at Miller Park and the Brewers remain perfect in his 18 home starts as a Brewer.

The Brewers built a 6-2 lead, but it quickly evaporated when Jose Veras came on in the 7th inning.  Brian Bogusevic tripled in two runs with one out and Chris Johnson followed with an RBI single to make it a one-run game.

Francisco Rodriguez pitched a scoreless 8th inning and John Axford struck out the side in the 9th, extending his club record to 46 consecutive saves in the regular season.

Game 2 of the series is tonight at Miller Park.  Randy Wolf (0-2 8.80 ERA) goes starts for the Brewers.  Bud Norris (1-0, 4.26 ERA) foes for the Astros.
