Marquette falls in second round of NCAA Women’s Tournament

Shambria Washington hit the go-ahead three-pointer late on Sunday, sending Texas A & M into the women’s NCAA “Sweet 16”, knocking off the Marquette Golden Eagles 78-76.

Marquette led 76-74 with 36 second left before Washington (13 points-six assists) drilled the game-winning three-pointer with 23-seconds left.

Aggies star Chennedy Carter poured in 03 points to help the fourth-seeded Aggies (26-7) advance.  They’ll meet the winner of Monday night’s game between Michigan State and Notre Dame in Chicago on Saturday.  Carter added nine rebounds and five assists.

Natisha Hiedeman played all 40 minutes and led Marquette (27-8) with 18 points.  It was the last chance for Hiedeman, who is one of five seniors on the squad (Allazia Blockton, Danielle King, Amani Wilborn and Erika Davenport).

Marquette opens Big East tournament with a win

Big East Player of the Year, Natisha Hiedeman, scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Marquette Golden Eagles to a 88-57 win over 9th-seeded St. John’s in the conference tournament on Sunday.

Allazia Blockton added 17 points, Amani Wilborn 13 and Lauren Van Kleuen 11 for the Golden Eagles.

Marquette (25-6) will face Georgetown (16-14) in the semifinals at 3 p.m. on Monday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles shot 50 percent for the game with 8 three-pointers.

The two teams had split their two games during the regular season.

Marquette women fall in Big East title game

The Marquette women’s basketball team fell to the DePaul Blue Demons 98-63 in the Big East Championship game.

The Blue Demons outscored the Golden Eagles 30-12 in the second quarter, leading 52-29 at halftime.  DePaul hit 7 three-pointers in the second quarter and finished with 16 treys for the game.

Amarah Coleman scored a career high 27 points for the Blue Demons.  Amani Wilborn had 12 points to lead Marquette.  The Golden Eagles Allazia Blockton, who won Big East Player of the Year honors, was held to just eight points.

Marquette (23-9) has to wait to hear its name called when the NCAA women’s field is announced on Monday night.

Women’s college basketball results

The Marquette Golden Eagles pushed their Big East record to 7-0 with a 88-67 win over Xavier at the Al McGuire Center on Sunday.

Allazia Blockton scored 19 points, while Danielle King added 16 and Amani Wilborn had 15 for the Golden Eagles (13-5, 7-0).

Badgers fall

In the Big Ten, Penn State knocked off the Wisconsin Badgers 69-62.  Amari Carter’s 21 points paced the Lions in the victory over the Badgers.

Wisconsin (7-12, 0-6) remains winless in Big Ten play.

Marquette women blowout Loyola

The Marquette women’s basketball team had an easy time of it on Tuesday night, blowing out Loyola (Illinois) 92-30 at the Al McGuire Center.  Amani Wilborn had 19 points and nine rebounds in the 62 point win.

The 62-point margin of victory is a program record.

Marquette opened the game with a 15-2 run, then scored 26 straight points in the second quarter to lead 57-12 at halftime.

Erika Davenport added 14 points for the Golden Eagles, who improved to 3-2.

Marquette headed for Big East title game

The Marquette Golden Eagles knocked off the 2nd-seeded Creighton BlueJays for the first time this season, winning 72-65 in the Big East Conference Tournament semifinals at the Al McGuire Center.

The win sends Marquette (24-7) to its first ever Big East tournament championship game, facing DePaul at 8 p.m. on Tuesday night.

Creighton (23-7) entered the game on a nine-game winning streak, ranked 23rd in the country.  But the Blue Jays managed to put just one player in double figures in scoring as Sydney Lamberty scored 26 points.

Amani Wilborn scored 21 points, Allazia Blockton had 19 points and seven rebounds and Danielle King had 18 points and five rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles.

Marquette improved to 5-0 against top-25 ranked teams this season.
