Milwaukee Brewers radio play-by-play voice Bob Uecker suffered a mild concussion when he was struck by a ball during pre-game batting practice on Monday night.   Uecker was hospitalized overnight at Froedert Hospital as a precaution.

Uecker was struck on the forehead but went on to do his radio broadcast until he eventually taken to the hospital when he didn’t feel right.  It was then that Uecker was examined and determined to have had a mild concussion.

The Brewers say Uecker will be fine, but its not certain whether or not he’ll broadcast tonight’s game against Kansas City at Miller Park.

morning that he’s planning to cut back on his road broadcast schedule during the upcoming 2014 season.

Uecker said he still planned to do all of the home games at Miller Park and would only cut back on his road travel with the team.

The 80-year-old Uecker also made it clear that this is not the first step toward retirement.  Uecker has been calling Brewers games since 1971.  He said after 59 years in baseball, it’s time to “kick back and relax a little bit.”

Uecker mourning the death of his son

April 7, 2012 By Bill Scott

On the day that Bob Uecker was calling yet another baseball opener for the Milwaukee Brewers, Mr. Baseball lost his son.

Steve Uecker passed away at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee from complications related to an illness known as San Joaquin Valley Fever.  He was 52.

“This is a very difficult time for all of my family as we mourn the loss of my son Steve,” Bob Uecker said.  “We appreciate the support of everyone connected to the Brewers: the players and coaches, the front office, and the fans.  I also want to thank all of the doctors and staff at Froedtert Hospital for their efforts and care throughout this process.”

“Bob is a great friend, and on behalf of everyone at the Brewers, Debbie and I want to extend our deepest sympathies to him and his family on the passing of his son Steve,” said Brewers Chairman and Principal Owner Mark Attanasio.  “His loss is our loss, and we share his sadness today.”

A private memorial service will be held.
