Brewers inch closer to full squad workouts this weekend

Catcher Jonathan Lucroy and left-hander Zach Braddock signed contracts for 2012, leaving just three players without deals for 2012 on the Milwaukee Brewers 40-man roster.  Pitchers John Axford, Chris Narveson and Michael Fiers remain without deals.

The Brewers first full squad workout is set for this weekend.  They open exhibition play on March 4th against the San Francisco Giants at Maryvale.

Brewers make roster moves

The Milwaukee Brewers have designated right-hander Sergio Mitre for assignment and recalled left-hander Zach Braddock and infielder Mat Gamel from Triple-A Nashville.

Gamel has played well at Nashville of late and there’s a good chance he could open up as the designated hitter for the start of tonight’s series with the New York Yankees in New York.

Brewers deal for left handed reliever

The Milwaukee Brewers claimed left-handed reliever Daniel Ray Herrera off waivers from Cincinnati to add a reliever to their injury-plagued bullpen.

The 26-year-old Herrera pitched the last three seasons with the Reds and was in Triple-A this year.  The Brewers assigned him to their Triple-A  Nashville affiliate.

The Brewers currently have no lefties in their bullpen.  Mitch Stetter, Zach Braddock and Manny Parra are all currently out with injuries.

Braddock sharp in rehab start

Making his second rehab start with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers last night, Brewers left-handed reliever Zach Braddock threw three scoreless, hitless innings against the Beloit Snappers.  Braddock walked 1 and struck out 2.

But Beloit jumped on reliever Jimmy Nelson in the fourth inning and the Snappers went on to beat the Timber Rattlers 7-0 at Fox Cities Stadium.

The two teams play a doubleheader at Fox Cities Stadium today, starting at 12:05pm.

Braddock went on the disabled list with a sleep disorder on May 3.  He had appeared in 12 games for the Brewers before going on the DL.  Braddock made a start for the Timber Rattlers last Thursday and struck out all five batters that faced in a win over Cedar Rapids.

Braddock will have a 35-pitch limit at Fox Cities Stadium tonight.
