The Milwaukee Brewers offense finally showed some signs of life, scoring twice in the 9th inning to force extra innings with the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night. But Rockies pinch-hitter Wilin Rosario clubbed a home run in the 10th off of Brewers closer Francisco Rodriguez, giving Colorado a season opening 3-game sweep over the Brewers.
It’s the first season-opening sweep suffered by the Brewers since 2011. It’s the first time ever that the Brewers were swept in their first series at home.
Rosario fell behind Rodriguez 0-2, then worked the count full before going deep.
Corey Dickerson and Carlos Gonzalez also clubbed homers for the Rockies. Dickerson’s shot tied the game 2-2 in the seventh off of starter Wily Peralta. Gonzalez’ blast was a two-run shot in the 8th off of Jonathan Broxton.
Former Brewers closer John Axford retired the Brewers in order in the 10th, his first save of the season.
The Brewers scored twice in the ninth off of Rockies closer LaTroy Hawkins to tie the game 4-4. Pinch hitter Ryan Braun’s infield single scored Gerardo Parra to make it 4-3 and Carlos Gomez followed with a single to right to score Jean Segura to force extra innings.
Wily Peralta scattered seven hits over seven innings, but he also gave up Dickerson’s seventh inning homer that allowed the Rockies to even the score.
The Brewers were outscored in the series 20-6 and outhit 38-22.
The Brewers now play their next 19 games against Central Division foes. They’ll open a 3-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Miller Park on Friday night. The Brewers will play home and home series against the Pirates, Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds during the 19-game stretch.
