Packers fans get their wish, report says Hundley dealt to Seahawks

August 29, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Packers backup QB job goes to DeShone Kizer.

Brett Hundley went 3-6 in nine starts while filling in for Aaron Rodgers last season.  The Green Bay Packers missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008 and fans placed the blame on the shoulders of Hundley.  Those same fans were far more supportive of newcomer Deshone Kizer during training camp than they were of Hundley.

ESPN’s Rob Demovsky and Adam Schefter reported today that the Packers sent Hundley to the Seattle Seahawks for a 2019 draft pick.  Packers fans got their wish and will now see if Kizer can do the job if something were to happen to Rodgers again.

In a perfect world, Kizer will stand on the sidelines and watch, only playing in mop-up duty.

Hundley threw for 1,836 yards last season with nine touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

A source to the story said the Packers plan to keep both Kizer and rookie Tim Boyle on their 53-man roster, barring [Read more…]

Packers open preseason against Tennessee

August 9, 2018 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers isn’t expected to play in Thursday night’s preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans at Lambeau Field.  He hasn’t played in a preseason opener since 2015.  It means the battle for the backup job, between Brett Hundley and DeShone Kizer will heat up.

Hundley and Kizer are expected to split snaps with fourth-stringer Tim Boyle potentially getting a brief chance in the end.

Most of the teams starters will see little or no time, like wide receivers Davante Adams, Randall Cobb and Geronimo Allison.  It leaves Jake Kumerow, J’Mon Moore, Marquez Valdes-Scanting and Equanimeous St. Brown to get most of the opportunity as they battle for roster spots.  Among that group, Kumerow has been the most consistent and has drawn the endorsement of quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Packer Nation will get their first look at new Defensive Coordinator Mike Pettine’s defense.  The Packers are expected to see Titans starting quarterback Marcus Mariota, who is expected to play tonight.

Kick time tonight is set for 7 p.m. at Lambeau Field.

Packers send Randall to Cleveland for Kizer

March 10, 2018 By Bill Scott

Damarious Randall is dealt to Cleveland.

It didn’t take new General Manager Brian Gutekunst long to make his first potential impactful deal with the Green Bay Packers.  Gutekunst send defensive back Damarious Randall to the Cleveland Browns on Friday for quarterback DeShone Kizer.

The NFL Network also reported that the deal included the Packers and Browns swapping 4th and 5th round draft picks, giving the Packers the opportunity to draft at the front of both rounds.

Kizer gives the Packers another young quarterback to compete with Brett Hundley for the backup job behind Aaron Rodgers.  He started 15 games for the winless Browns last season.

But the move also takes away the team’s top defensive playmaker in the secondary to finish last season.  Randall did miss the last two games of the season with a knee injury.  After being benched and sent to the locker room in a Week 4 game against Chicago, he turned things around and went on to lead the team with a career-high four interceptions. Packers end season in disappointment

January 1, 2018 By Bill Scott

Mike McCarthy

As it turned out, when Aaron Rodgers went down with a broken collarbone injury in week six against the Vikings, the Green Bay Packers season was over.

The Packers capped off their season with a 35-11 loss to the Detroit Lions at Ford Field,  Rodgers backup, Brett Hundley went 3-6 in games that he started in place of Rodgers, 3-7 if you count the game that he played in after Rodgers was injured.

The Packers finished the year 7-9, their first losing season since 2008.  They were swept in their season-series with Detroit for the first time since 1991.

Brett Hundley threw just one touchdown pass over the last two games, once the Packers were officially out of the playoffs.

The Packers looked like a demoralized bunch on Sunday.  In fact, there were signs that was the case even prior to Sunday as Brett Hundley continued to struggle, week after week.

When Mike McCarthy was asked after Sunday’s game if he sensed his players were demoralized, the coach snapped back. [Read more…]

Rodgers season comes to an end

December 20, 2017 By Bill Scott

Brett Hundley

Aaron Rodgers returned to the Green Bay lineup for just one game, a 31-24 loss against the Carolina Panthers.  Just two days later, the Packers placed Rodgers on season-ending injured reserve.  Brett Hundley will return to the starting lineup for the final two games of the season, including Saturday nights home game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Rodgers was sore after taking a number of hits in Sunday’s game and felt it was the best decision.

“He’s not happy about it,” McCarthy said.  “It’s a hard day for him.  This is not the way, I don’t think, any player wants to see their season come to a conclusion, being on IR.  We all understand and appreciate and respect his competitive spirit, but we felt as an organization this was in his best interest.

Several times during McCarthy’s press conference on Tuesday, he said, “We felt this was clearly in Aaron Rodgers’ best interest.” [Read more…]

Rodgers says he’s been cleared to play for the Packers on Sunday

December 13, 2017 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has been out since breaking his collarbone on October 15 at Minnesota, announced on twitter Tuesday night that he’s received medical clearance to return to action this Sunday at Carolina.

Rodgers tweeted: “It’s been a long road from that day to this, but I’m happy to say I’ve been medically cleared to return.  Thanks for all the love, support, prayers, and well wishes over the last 8 weeks.”

Rodgers return means Brett Hundley returns to a backup role.  Hundley went 3-4 in a starting role with Rodgers sidelined.

The Packers (7-6) will need to beat the Panthers (9-4) on Sunday, then win their last two division games against the Vikings (Dec. 23 at Lambeau Field and Dec. 31 at Detroit) and Lions to have a chance at the postseason.

Rodgers underwent a series of scans on Monday, which was followed by several medical opinions with regards to Rodgers potential return.  Various reports indicate the collarbone isn’t totally healed, but the medical opinion and that of Packers management feel the risk of further injury is worth taking as the Packers try to make a playoff run.

Hundley did his job, keeping the Packers in the playoff picture

If Aaron Rodgers returns to the Green Bay Packers lineup this week against the Carolina Panthers, they’ll be in the position most would have hoped for when backup Brett Hundley took over eight weeks ago.

The Packers and their fans were hoping Hundley would keep the Packers in playoff contention, allowing Rodgers to return with a chance to get the Packers into the postseason.

After Hundley led the Packers to another comeback win on Sunday, 27-21 over the Cleveland Browns in overtime, he admitted himself that the goal was to keep the Packers in the thick of things.  He’s won three games since taking over.

Hundley had his best day yet, completing 35 of 46 for 265 yards and three touchdowns.  The Packers came from 21-7 down to win it.  It’s a franchise record third time in one season that the Packers have rebounded to win a game after being down by 14 or more points.

Davante Adams caught a pair of touchdown passes, the first coming with :17 left to play in regulation to force overtime and the second coming with the Packers already in field goal position.  Adams caught a pass and broke a tackle, out-racing the Browns to the end zone for the game winning score. Running game & defense leads Packers victory, playoff hopes remain alive

December 4, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers stayed in the NFC playoff picture by knocking off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 26-20 in overtime on Sunday, snapping a three-game Lambeau Field losing streak.

The Packers improved to 6-6 and will face winless Cleveland on Sunday with the potential return of quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the final three games of the regular season.

The Packers used a couple of big plays to help their cause.  Linebacker Kyler Fackrell blocked a punt that allowed the Packers to take over at the Tampa Bay 45.  Jamaal Williams later scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to give the Packers a 10-7 lead.

On the very next Tampa Bay possession, Green Bay defensive tackle Kenny Clark stripped the ball from quarterback Jameis Winston and the ball was scooped up in mid-air by Dean Lowry who returned the fumble 62 yards for a touchdown and a 17-7 Packers lead.

The Packers have struggled to get pressure on quarterbacks this season, but they made up for lost time on Sunday.  Clay Matthews returned to the lineup and recorded 2 1/2 sacks.  Kenny Clark added two sacks, the first two of his career, helping the Packers to a seven sack day.  The seven sacks was one short of the team record set against the Philadelphia Eagles in 2004. Packers fall short in Pittsburgh, can they still make the playoffs?

November 27, 2017 By Bill Scott

Mike McCarthy

For the first time in weeks, the Green Bay Packers looked like a team capable of sustaining a late season push towards a possible playoff spot.  Their effort fell just short at Pittsburgh on Sunday night, as a last second 53-yard field goal turned into a 31-28 Packers defeat.

The loss didn’t eliminate the Packers (5-6) from the playoff hunt, but their position isn’t one that teams are clamoring to be in either.  The NFC North division race, although mathematically still possible, but those odds are slim.  They trail the Minnesota Vikings (9-2) by four games with five left to play.

In the wildcard race, the Packers odds are a little better, but still not anything to write home about at this time.  The Packers two games behind a pair of teams for the sixth and final playoff spot.  It likely puts them in a position where they will need to win all five remaining games and then still get some help along the way.

Brett Hundley, in his best performance yet, completed 17 of 26 for 245 yards and three touchdowns.  Even more important is Hundley didn’t turn the ball over.  And it wasn’t because he was too conservative.  [Read more…]

Packers secure much needed victory

November 13, 2017 By Bill Scott

Brett Hundley

Brett Hundley threw for 212 yards and a touchdown to collect his first NFL win and secure a much needed victory for Green Bay.  The Packers snapped a three-game losing streak by beating the Chicago Bears 23-16 at Soldier Field on Sunday.

Hundley threw a 17-yard touchdown to Davante Adams to give the Packers a 23-13 lead with 5:29 left to play and the Packers (5-4) held on for the win, beating the Bears (3-6) for the eighth time in the last nine games.

The win was the first for the Packers since they last beat Dallas back on October 8.  Aaron Rodgers broke his collarbone against the Vikings one week later and the Packers have been winless until Sunday.

Hundley completed 18 of 25 passes and Ty Montgomery ran for a 37-yard touchdown in the second quarter.  But the Packers ended up losing both Montgomery (ribs) and starting tailback Aaron Jones (knee) to injury.  Jamaal Williams came in to rush for 67 yards on 20 carries and the Packers totaled 160 yards on 37 carries.
