Garcia ends major drought, Stricker closes strong

April 10, 2017 By Bill Scott

Steve Stricker

Sergio Garcia can no longer be called one of the best golfers to not have won a major.  Garcia missed a chance to win the 81st Masters in regulation, then birdied the 18th hole in a one-hole playoff to beat Justin Rose.

The 37-year-old Garcia shot a final-round 69 and finished with a 9-under-par 279 total, winning the $1.98 million top prize.  After 73 majors, Garcia got the monkey off of his back to win.

It didn’t come easy though.  Garcia had bogeys on holes 10 and 11 and had to scramble for a par on the par-5 13th

Garcia then birdied number-14 to pull to within a shot.  He eagled the par-5 15th to pull into a tie with Rose. [Read more…]

McIlroy wins Bridgestone, now looks to the PGA

August 4, 2014 By Bill Scott

After winning the British Open, Rory McIlroy came from three shots down on the final day yesterday to win the Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.

McIlroy closed with a 4-under 66 to make a 3-shot deficit to pass Sergio Garcia and win by two strokes.  He also took over the No. 1 ranking in the lead.  McIlroy finished at 15-under 265, taking home $1.53 million.

McIlroy took over the lead for good on the 11th hole and cruised to the victory.

Four months after back surgery, Tiger Woods injured his lower back and had to withdraw on Sunday.  His status for the upcoming PGA Championship is in question.

Madison’s Steve Stricker failed to shoot a round under par (70).  He had rounds of 74, 73, 72 and 73 to finish 12 over par.  He’ll try to rebound this week for the upcoming PGA Championship which starts on Thursday.

Garcia fires a 61 to lead at the Bridgestone Invitational

August 2, 2014 By Bill Scott

Sergio Garcia one-putted the final 11 holes and made birdies on his last seven holes Friday in the PGA‘s Bridgestone Invitational to tie the course record at Firestone with a 9-under-61 and take a three-shot lead in Akron, Ohio.

Garcia had a birdie putt on every hole on the back nine, missing only a 15-footer from the fringe at No. 11.  Garcia shot a 27 on the back nine, a course record.

Garcia was at 11-under 129, three shots in front of Justin Rose, who shot a second round 3-under par 67.

Madison’s Steve Stricker struggled again on day 2.  He followed up Thursday’s 4-over par 74 with a 3-over par 73 and is 7-over through the first two rounds.  There are no cuts, so Stricker will play out the weekend and then head to the PGA Championship next week.

The third round is already underway this morning.  They’re getting an early start because of rain in the forecast for later in the day.
