Kelly wins AmFam title in a playoff

Madison’s Jerry Kelly held off tournament host Steve Stricker and World Golf Hall of Famer Retief Goosen in a playoff to win the American Family Insurance Championship  on Sunday at University Ridge.

Stricker missed a birdie putt from 8-feet away on the final regulation hole that would have given him the title.  Stricker then dropped out of the three way playoff on the first extra hole.

Kelly needed to more holes to knock off Goosen, winning with a birdie on the par 4 15th hole.

Kelly actually had the chance to win it in regulation as well, but he bogied the final hole of regulation to let Goosen and Stricker back into the mix.

Stricker missed some chances with the putter in the final round and still had an opportunity to win late. [Read more…]

Kelly captures first senior title

Madison’s Jerry Kelly captured his first Champions Tour title in 13 starts by winning the Boeing Classic in Snoqualmie, Washington.

Kelly shot a 6-under par 66 to finish a tournament record 19-under 197.  Kelly tied Jerry Smith for the lead with a birdie on the par-4 16th hole and moved ahead with a 15-foot birdie put on the par-3 17th.

The win moved Kelly up to 11th in the Schwab Cup standings with $762,277.  It ends a 8-year drought for Kelly, who last won the PGA Tour’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2009.

Fox Point native Skip Kendall (72) tied for 41st.

Johnson wins in a playoff

Dustin Johnson trailed Jordan Spieth by five strokes early in the round.  Johnson ended up winning The Northern Trust in Old Westbury, New York in a playoff.

The top 100 golfers in the Fed Ex Cup point standings advance to this weeks even at TPC Boston.

Stricker finished third in Champions Tour event

Madison’s Steve Stricker placed third in this weekend’s Champions Tour event, the 3M Championship in Blaine, Minnesota.  Stricker shot a final round 66.

Paul Goydos birdied the first playoff hole to win the event over Gene Sauers.  Both Goydos and Sauers shot 66 in regulation to get to 20-under 196.

Kevin Sutherland shot 64 to tie Stricker and Brandt Jobe (67) for third, finishing two shots back.

Madison’s Jerry Kelly (67) and Fox Point native Skip Kendall (69) finished well back.

Stricker will now take his game back to the PGA Tour, where he’ll compete for the Wanamaker Trophy this week in the 99th PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Golf Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Stricker will tee off on hole number-10 on Thursday afternoon at 12:40 p.m., paired with Jonas Blixt and Brian Harman.

Jimmy Walker is the defending champion, pulling out the win at Baltusrol in 2016.  Rory McIlroy is considered the favorite, having captured the 2010 and the 2015 titles.  He also owns the course record at Quail Hollow with a round of 61.

Hideki Matsuyama shot a 9-under-par 61 on Sunday to win the Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.

Kendall to return for American Family Insurance Championship

amfam_championship_logoWisconsin native Skip Kendall will play in the first-ever PGA Tour Champions American Family Insurance Championship, June 24-26, at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.  Kendall received a sponsor’s exemption from American Family.

Kendall was born and raised in the Milwaukee area, before playing collegiate golf at UNLV.  He then hit the professional golf ranks, winning four times on the Web.com Tour, and earning 26 top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour and three top-10 finishes on the PGA Champions Tour.

Kendall also won the Wisconsin State Open in 1988 and 1989.

Fans can purchase tickets for the American Family Insurance Championship at the tournament website at www.amfamchampionship.com.
