Masters update

Madison’s Jerry Kelly shot an opening round 2-over park 74 at the Masters

in Augusta, Georgia. 

Wisconsin’s Mark Wilson is at 4-over par through 13 holes.  Steve Stricker just started his opening round.

Rory McIlroy is the leader on the course at 5-under par through 12 holes.

Ross Fisher and Brandt Snedeker are the clubhouse leaders, after opening round 3-under par 69’s today.

Tee times of note for “The Masters”

The 2011 Masters, golf’s first major of the season, starts tomorrow (Thursday).

The three Wisconsin golfers in the field have the following Thursday-Friday tee times.

Jerry Kelly – 7:07am & 10:14am  with Camillo Villegas & Jeff Overton

Mark Wilson – 8:13am & 11:31am  with Martin Laird & Bo Van Pelt

Steve Stricker – 11:53am & 8:24am  with Fred Couples & Luke Donald

Other groupings of note are Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Jason Day at 8:24am & 11:42am.  #1 ranked Martin Kaymer, along with Lee Westwood and Matt Kuchar at 9:19am & 12:26pm.  Tiger Woods, Graeme McDowell and Robert Allenby at 9:41am and 12:48pm.  And defending champion Phil Mickelson goes off with Geoff Ogilvy and amateur Peter Uihlein at 12:48pm and 9:30am.

Stricker & Wilson preparing for Masters

Wisconsin golfers Steve Stricker and Mark Wilson are preparing for the first major of the golf season, the Masters in Augusta, Georgia on Thursday.

Stricker, who ranks 8th in the world, is making his 11th Masters appearance.  His best finish was a tie for 6th in 2009.  He’s also missed the cut in 5 of the 10 Masters Tournaments. 

Wilson, who has won twice already on tour this season, is making his first Masters appearance.

Mickelson heads to Masters with momentum

Phil Mickelson captured the PGA’s 2011  Houston Open on Sunday to jump to third in the world heading into his Masters title defense.

Mickelson shot a 63 on Saturday and closed with a 7-under par 65 on Sunday, finishing 3-shots better than Chris Kirk and Scott Verplank.

Madison’s Steve Stricker fired a final round 3-under par 69 and finished in a tie for fourth, seven shots off the lea

Mickelson will be shooting for his fourth green jacket when the 2011 Masters gets underway at Augusta on Thursday.

Thursday was a good day to go low at the Masters

Thirty-0ne golfers broke par on the first day of the Masters at Augusta.  But none of the 31 had the last names of Kelly or Stricker. 

Madison’s Jerry Kelly shot an even par 72 and Steve Stricker struggled with a 1-over par 73, on a day that a good score could be had.

50-year old Fred Couples fired a 6-under par 66 to take a 1-shot lead into today’s second round.  60-year old Tom Watson had his best round at the Masters in well over a decade when he joined a group of others at 5-under par 67. [Read more…]

Stricker to play a round with Tiger today

Tiger Woods, speaking after a practice round at the Masters yesterday, said he’ll play a practice round today with Madison’s Steve Stricker.  Woods played 18 holes at Augusta National with Fred Couples on Monday.

Stricker, ranked 2nd in the world, was paired with Tiger Woods at the Presidents Cup in October.  The two have become friends in recent years.
