Kaymer wins 2010 PGA Championship

August 15, 2010 By Bill Scott

Germany’s Martin Kaymer captured the 2010 PGA Championship, beating Bubba Watson in a 3-hole playoff at Whistling Straits.

The tournament was headed for a 3-man playoff, but Dustin Johnson was assessed a 2-stroke penalty for grounding his club in a bunker on 18.

Watson birdied the first extra hole and took a 1-stroke lead after Kaymer came up with a par on the par-4 10th hole.  Then the result was flip-flopped in 17, where Kaymer birdied the par-3 17th and Watson parred the hole.  Going to 18, Watson put his 2nd shot in a waste area in front of the green and ended with a double-bogey.  Kaymer coaxed a bogey and captured his first major.

Dustin Johnson’s mistake on 18 was a big one.  It cost him a chance at a win, and around $1.3-million.  Instead, he’s tied for 5th with Jason Dufner and Steve Elkington and his take home prize money will total around $300,000.

Zach Johnson and Rory McIlroy tied for 3rd, 1-shot off the lead.

Madison’s Steve Stricker finished tied for 18th after his 3rd even par round of the tournament.  Stricker stands at 4-under par overall.
